LoveYooJiae 272
And as a long-time observer of Woollim and its management I find it very hard to disagree. This was taken from SM C&C's official website, here: http://www.smcultureandcontents.com/eng/label/woollim.aspI debated bringing this up, but why do I get the feeling that they're trying to undermine YG by advertising Woollim like this? YG like to pride themselves as a label that not only produces popular artists, but rather popular and musically talented artists all in one. Then the merger with Woollim, who have ties with the indie scene and the like, happens and it seems like they're sending a challenge to YG by calling Woollim the one and only label to be acclaimed for musicality and popularity. SM were already on top of the game– it seemed with not much left to prove as we're already acquainted with their business savvy ways and ingenuity when it comes to making money– but are they now trying to not only be the top in their specialty (idol making), but be on equal footing with YG at their own game as well and boast a diverse line-up of idol groups and musicians (further proven by their recent shift in musicality with their own artists)? Of course SM has no interest in doing that themselves (signing artists that are musically inclined rather than popularity or revenue driven), but hey look, they've got Woollim to do that for them now. I'm guessing this was part of the appeal of merging with Woollim, because what they wanted was something Woollim was already doing (and doing well I might add), but which SM did not want to do personally because it was not lucrative. I mean, check this out (also from website). I think they're making it very clear that what SM wants. I'm going off on a tangent here, but I find it kind of ironic that Epik High formerly contracted with Woollim and then ended up at YG, and now the rest of Woollim artists are under SM's umbrella. Everyone seems to want a piece of Woollim's artists. It gets even more ironic when you consider that YG was part of Seo Taiji & Boys, and Seo Taiji recruited Nell and mentored them before they joined Woollim, as illustrated by this rough, incredibly confusing, and incomplete chart of Woollim's networking since approximately 2010.Ah, and before people who don't know try to chime in, Woollim, despite it's size, is actually a pretty well known label in Korea (and popular too, they are frequently voted the third best company that young people wish they could join after SM and YG). They aren't a nugu label and this "acclaim" that SM says Woollim have received is for the most part true. Lee Jung Yeop, Woollim's CEO, has worked with the likes of Lee Seunghwan, Toy (Yoo Hee Yeol), Epik High, Nell, Jisun, Kim Jang Hoon, Lee Sora, Kim Dongryul, Jinbo, P2eny, Strawberry Fields, etc. Snippet from an Interview in early 2013 to further elucidate this: "The skilled one who is shaking the industry of K-pop with Infinite" "Aside from Yoon Jongshin, I believe you have worked with all the singers that are referred to as musicians." CEO Lee Jung Yeop hears this kind of praise often. CEO Lee Jung Yeop said that he 'opened his ears' as he worked with musicians for a long time. As he was with them while they were working all night, he got to learn the rhythm and beats, and feel the trend... When he created Woollim in 2003, Kim Dongryul was in the company. To a lot of people this meant that Woollim would become a music company with music that will cause a 'tremor' (echo; Woollim means echo in Korean). When the company was established it secured its spot with the success of Kim Dongryul followed by Epik High, then later Nell and Jisun.
aripod 2,721
I already loved Infinite for their music so that just makes me happy to read. I guess it could be seen as trying to bring down other labels, but that's what competition is about.

LoveYooJiae 272
The way Woollim abandoned Tablo is unforgivable. I'd just like to say that it was Tablo who left Woollim. Woollim did not kick Tablo to the curb, they just couldn't do anything about his problem. To be honest they've always been bad at handling scandals, it wasn't anything personal. They literally had like five people working for the company including managers and no money, no resources, etc... Even if they'd said, "hey guys, we support Tablo, we know he's telling the truth", the problem would have still persisted. Nobody believed Tablo even when he provided proof that what he was saying was true.
karutamral 647
The way Woollim abandoned Tablo is unforgivable. Do you think a small company such as woollim had the resources to handle that big of a controversy? They were risking their own survival if they tried get into the thick of the controversy. SimSimi 503
Excluding Infinite I suppose, since they are the epitome of a standard idol group. Nothing creative about them.

They were risking their own survival if they tried get into the thick of the controversy. They didn't need money. All Tablo was looking for was emotional support. He wanted to know that his boss had his back. Epik High put Woollim on the map. To have his boss turn his back on him when he needed him most. That is complete and utter bullshit. LoveYooJiae 272
I think Epik High and Nell could make high quality music even without Woolim Of course they could, they've never once been infliuenced by Woollim or told that they had to do something a certain way. What Woollim does is provide resources for bands like Nell to pursue their creative efforts, and then Woollim takes care of marketing them, etc. With Infinite it was different at first, Lee Jung Yeop personally had a hand in creating Infinite's style and direction from the beginning, but now he lets the members pursue their own interests (Sunggyu with rock music, and Infinite H with hip hop), and he's even given the members opportunities to compose and write for the group's albums. Slowly he's giving the members more liberties and the members themselves have expressed desires to eventually design their concepts, direct their music videos, and photograph their own album photos. The biggest reason Woollim are called a creative label, aside from their music, is the way they creatively promote their artists. Some might say Infinite's ascension to popularity was made possible by using unusual and creative methods.
lepidoptery 2,917
Frankly, I find it odd that SM is apparently admitting that the general public don't think their idols have musicality or something.
