NEW YORK — Immigrant workers across the country are planning to strike Thursday to demonstrate their importance to American society.

The protest was set in motion as the Trump administration continues to pursue hard-line enforcement policies that advocates fear will disrupt communities and the economy.

While the majority of the strike is expected to take place in Washington, D.C., protests in major U.S. cities across the nation are also being carried out Thursday.

Blue Ribbon restaurants in NYC, including Blue Ribbon Brasserie, Brooklyn, Sushi, Sushi Bar & Grill, Sushi Izakaya, Hi-Bar, and Downing Street Bar, will be closed Thursday in support of their employees, according to their website.

At least three protests are expected to be carried out in New Jersey, according to New Jersey immigrants’ rights group, New Labor.

New Labor organizers will demonstrate in Lakewood at 9 a.m., followed by another in New Brunswick at 1 p.m. and third in Newark at 3 p.m.

In Perth Amboy, officials have urged residents to plan for several local restaurants and bodegas to be closed as part of the protest. City cab companies are also expected to be out of service and officials say residents should plan accordingly.

In Danbury, Conn., more than 50 Hispanic-owned businesses are expected to be closed Thursday for the strike.

Organizers in Philadelphia told the Associated Press they expect hundreds of workers and families to participate.

On Wednesday, the hashtag #ADayWithoutImmigrants began to trend on Twitter. Some announced their plan to stand in solidarity with immigrants. Others said this was a chance to round up and deport illegal immigrants.

I hate big crowds and I'm too introverted so I'm not going but the kitchen staff at the Japanese restaurant I work are. Not sure if it's all or some of them who will be going but if its all the restaurant will probably be closed for the day or something since there's no way the restaurant can operate without a kitchen.

I stand with my immigrant brothers and sisters, immigrants created america, without immigrants we wouldn't be as big or powerful as now.

Not all immigrants are equal. Some came from industrious nations and helped build our civilization, literally. Others are coming here illegally to be welfare leeches or to wreak havoc. Some discernment is necessary.

Immigrants are not the problems, its the illegals who are the problem to some people. I could give 2 shits less whether you have your green card and SSN. Heck most of the immigrants who came here probably came here illegally and they someone sponsored them and gave them papers.

The way my family got here was through sponsoring which was a lengthy and expensive process. I think that we waited approx. 10-12 years to get our visas.

i absolutely hate traffic, especially LA traffic, and since that's probably where the protest is and also because it's a miserable 1+ hour drive (depending on traffic) to LA from where I live and also because my sister depends on me to pick her up from work (she doesn't drive), I won't be going. That and I detest large crowds. I'm short so if I can't see where I'm going because I'm surrounded by people on all sides I get very panicky.

However I'm going to support the protesters in spirit, although i don't support illegal immigration (though the process to get a green card shouldn't take so many years), it seems like the protest is aimed at support for immigrants in general.

Are you Native American?  :wut:

The indigenous people that you're referring to didn't found the nation of the United States. They were conquered and a new nation was formed on the land. The USA was founded by European settlers. It was faulty wording on @bringmefood's part, but it's true that the USA is fundamentally a white country. There's a debate to be had on whether or not it should stay that way, but it's not accurate to suggest that the indigenous are more legitimately "American" than whites, if that's what you were getting at

Its true you need social for everything, however you know that people will give their SSN to the ones who are here illegally and let them work using it. It's super dangerous cause if you're caught you're fucked.

We came from Poland. Most of my family is here, well the family from my mother's side. Some of my cousins did not get a visa because at the time when we got it they were already 18 years of age or above.

If they're here illegally they should be identified and DEPORTED irregardless of other factors. If you're not following our existing immigration laws, you have no right to be here. Period.

The cost outway the benefits(deporting 11 million who are already deeply ingrained in our economy(thats like a small country), esp our agriculture sector, fruit and everything would sky rocket, theyd have to be in camps in probably super inhumane conditions till they got deported, its not realistic sweaty there should be another immigration amnesty like reagan did in 1986

That's all beside the point, conquered (and this in itself is nothing to be proud of) or not, the Native Americans are the ones who founded this land first. European settlers later emigrated from Europe to North America. And for centuries after other Europeans also emigrated here from Europe. You have Italian Americans, Irish Americans, French-Americans and etc. who came her and joined the country way after it was founded, and were never part of the first thirteen colonies, just like other POC emigrants. That being said, the fact that you want to limit it to just the white emigrants just proves how close minded you are.

:hoplz:  but what else can I expect from a trump supporter?

The ground on which the nation was founded is irrelevant. The Nation itself is what matters. And the system that constitutes the United States of America never belonged to the indigenous, it belonged to the white European settlers that founded it upon conquering the indigenous. If that had never happened, it wouldn't have become a place that other industrious Europeans would want to immigrate to. I have no problem with high-quality individuals LEGALLY immigrating to the United States, regardless of race. What I don't want is an unmitigated influx of low-quality migrants from third-world countries. We need to enforce our existing immigration laws much more vigorously. And that includes deporting illegals.

:imstupid:  :imstupid:  :imstupid:  :imstupid: So much white supremacy coming from this I can't. And you must think oh so greatly of yourself to even think you have a right to determine who is a high class immigrant or not. And everything you spouted conflicts with your ideas that you "do not" care about race, but okay Trump supporter.  :imstupid:  :imstupid:
