A coworker of mine said literally the stupidest thing I've ever heard someone say

Okay so I'm in the breakroom at work having a conversation with a coworker about the theatre class I'm taking in college and one of the cashiers that I'm not really a fan of was kind of involved too (she wasn't contributing just had her chair turned towards us and wasn't on her phone, so I'm assuming she was listening) I was talking about how cool that I get to analyze plays and acting and all of that and that I also really liked how I get to reread some of the books I got to read in high school.

My coworker says, "are you reading Shakespeare?"

Then the cashier.. oh boy.. the cashier says, "what's that" and gives this look like we're saying something lame and she's judging.

We explained who Shakespeare was..... TO A 27 YEAR OLD.. HOLY SHIT! Not only did she not know who Shakespeare was, but she said what instead of who.

Now I'm not too sure if she finished high school (well she must have got a ged at least), because if I recall correctly she had a kid in her teens. But that's not really an excuse. Shakespeare's name is thrown around in middle school too. Plus even if you haven't read anything he's done that's still a name that one has probably heard before.

I just... I don't know what to say

that's a bit of  stretch considering to pass english at a senior lvl you must know what a sonnet is and iambic pentameter... which Shakespeare is famous for having in his works

but considering some states have vastly different requirements for graduation and literary practices in classes i'm not 100% sold that she's dumb...

i, for one, did not know about huckleberry finn or the grapes of wrath until i was out of outside because we did not cover such "famous" works in class

i mean idk

--

also just be glad you were able to educate someone and not belittle them due to their ignorance...

i'm sure you'd not enjoy someone putting you down for not knowing of a subject you clearly have no idea about

knowledge is power and she learned something in that exchange, that in itself should be a pass for putting judgement on her

Not everyone has the same literary programs. I've met people who don't know Shakespeare too.

Edit: Also, lot of folk don't pay attention in class.

More like they don't pay attention to life

Shakespeare is everywhere not just in school

Though not knowing Shakespeare is def not the dumbest thing a person could do

But even if you haven't read Shakespeare they should of at least watched a movie based on one of his works. They should know his name!

...I wouldn't say everywhere. I haven't heard his name mentioned once outside of my sister's theatre and film friends. If you're focused on Engineering or something, don't hang with people into reading, plays, or musicals, don't watch a lot of television or read a lot of the type of stuff that would mention Shakespeare (which you can get through life without), it's quite easy to go through life without running into the name Shakespeare or stuff that he's done. There's a whole lot of stuff that I don't know about or have forgotten simply because it wasn't important to me or my future career. To some people Shakespeare is just a name that can be forgotten or simply floats at the periphery of their life because it has no bearing on them. There are a ton of influential mathematicians, composers, artists, scientists, astronomers, and inventors that I don't and probably will never know who were just as influential as Shakespeare in other subjects.

Not everybody's or even educations world revolves around Shake-a-spear
