I have written a summary (but it is still long) of what took place in Episode 1, if anyone is interested to read.

Summary of Episode 1

The story is about 28 years old Minwoo who has partial memory loss i.e. he couldn’t remember what happened to him when he was 18. He is a web comic artist and his latest web comic, December 8 which is about the first love of two teenagers, has become so popular but he seems to be stuck for ideas to continue the web comic.  At the same time, he is also suffering from severe headaches and nausea.

There are basically 2 stories being told in Episode 1. One is the story of 28 years old Minwoo and the other is the story of 18 years old Minwoo (Teenage Minwoo). This episode kept going back and forth between Adult Minwoo and Teenage Minwoo. However, the scenes involving Teenage Minwoo are not part of Adult Minwoo’s memories because at this stage, he still couldn’t remember yet. The scenes are basically for the viewers’ benefit, to tell the viewers what has happened to Teenage Minwoo.

Adult Minwoo

Moving on with the story, we can see that Minwoo was being followed by a strange young girl but he seemed to be ignoring her or he just couldn’t see her. That girl was being followed by a stranger man who seemed to have some super natural power. She seemed to be afraid of him and was telling him that she was only following the person that she likes.

Minwoo consulted a psychiatrist and told him that he started the web comic after finding a 2003 calendar with some notes written on it. He assumed that the calendar was his but he couldn’t recall anything and the more he tried to remember, the worse his condition become. The psychiatrist told him that perhaps what he is searching for lies within his lost memories connected with the calendar.

Minwoo then came across a netizen’s comment i.e. the Fire Warrior, who claimed that the web comic is based on the artist’s true life story and that he knows what is going to happen next. Minwoo asked his Team Leader to find the Fire Warrior and went to visit his old school.

--------------------------------

Teenage Minwoo

We first met Mimi (the girl who was following Adult Minwoo) who took a semester off from school due to sickness. She couldn’t wait to start school again so she went to school on a Sunday and came across Teenage Minwoo who was playing guitar and singing in the art room. When Teenage Minwoo left the art room, Mimi sneaked in and accidently smeared Teenage Minwoo’s drawing of a seaside. Afraid of being found out, she hid inside a closet. Teenage Minwoo, not knowing someone else was in the room, left and locked the door.

He returned the keys to the Guard and went home. But then he noticed that the windows to the art room were opened. After finding out that someone was in the room, he tried to find the Guard but the Guard has gone home already. That night he stayed outside the art room to accompany Mimi.

The next day, he got the key and opened the door to the art room. Seeing that Mimi was sleeping, he went to buy a drink for Mimi. When he came back, Mimi has left.

------------------------------------

Adult Minwoo

At the school, Minwoo met his old Homeroom Teacher. He asked her the reason for the art room to be moved from its previous location. She told him that it was all because of him. She knew he was playing with fire in the art room with a girl and she asked whether he still meet with the girl. The teacher then told him to stop pretending not to know what she was talking about.

-------------------------------

Teenage Minwoo

At school, Mimi was following Teenage Minwoo around without Teenage Minwoo noticing her. A boy (Boy A) asked Teenage Minwoo to draw a picture of Mimi for him because he had a crush on her.

Teenage Minwoo then went to cut his hair at a salon belonged to Mimi’s aunt but he left his sketch book behind. When he went back to get the sketch book, Mimi asked him whether he knows how to ride a bicycle. At home, Teenage Minwoo found out that his mother had sold his bicycle due to financial problems. He then used his own savings to buy a new bicycle and gave the rest of his savings to his mother.

With his new bicycle, he went on a date with Mimi. Both of them were awkward at first which resulted in them falling down from the bicycle. Mimi noticed that the glass to Teenage Minwoo’s watch has cracked but Teenage Minwoo didn’t want to talk about the watch.

Teenage Minwoo went to Mimi’s salon again but saw that Boy A was getting his hair cut by Mimi. He got jealous and got into a fight with Mimi. Feeling bad, Teenage Minwoo painted a picture of the seaside on the wall outside the salon. However, Teenage Minwoo didn’t seem happy when Mimi asked him to go to the seaside with her.

Back in the art room, after some fooling around, Teenage Minwoo tried to kiss Mimi but his attempt failed because Mimi suddenly remember that she wanted to give him a present. It was a watch. But when Mimi tried to take off Minwoo’s watch, he resisted. He then explained that the watch was the only thing left that belonged to his father. When he was younger, he sneaked inside his father’s car since his father refused to take him to the sea. At the sea, his father didn’t allow him to swim but he swam anyway. He almost drowned but his father had saved him. When he came around, he saw his father’s dead body lying next to him.

It took him 3 years to realize that he couldn’t bring his father back. During those 3 years, he didn’t speak at all. He found out that the only thing he can do is to remember, through his drawings and through his father’s watch. He also said this to Mimi:

“If the person you love goes away, can the person who is left behind live a normal life? It’s like you’re living but you don’t feel like you’re living. Maybe following that person is the best thing to doâ€.

Mimi then kissed him but they both got awkward after that. To cover her embarrassment, Mimi looked at Teenage Minwoo’s sketch book and was shocked to see some naughty drawings (lol). Horrified, Teenage Minwoo snatched the sketch book and ran away.

After that, Mimi didn’t go to school and Teenage Minwoo was torn between wanting to see her or not. But just as he decided to go and look for Mimi, his mother came all packed and ready to move away to another town. Inside the van, Teenage Minwoo saw Mimi riding a bicycle to go the school.

-------------------------------------------------

Adult Minwoo

After visiting the school, Minwoo met the psychiatrist again telling him that he still couldn’t remember. This time he accepted the medicine that he refused earlier. It was raining on his way home. Mimi was following him and asked him to take the umbrella but he continued to ignore her. He received a phone call from the Team Leader saying that he has found out where the Fire Warrior lives. Mimi began to cry and silently begging Adult Minwoo not to meet the Fire Warrior.

Surprisingly, the Fire Warrior lives just in front of Minwoo’s apartment. Minwoo asked if the Fire Warrior knows what had happened to him. When the camera focused on the Fire Warrior, we can see that the Fire Warrior’s face is badly scarred, most probably by fire, and that he is Boy A.

End of Episode 1.

[Trans] Max Changmin, Transformation into "Icon of First Love"

"The emotive acting of finding love in Mnet "Mimi" creates a stir"

Through his sorrowful acting, Max Changmin has stirred the emotions of the ladies.

In cable channel Mnet's 4-part drama "Mimi", which had its first broadcast on Feb 21, Max Changmin is acting out the role of Han Min Woo, who suddenly ventures on a search to meet his first love once again after 10 years have passed since his high school days. Through this drama, Max Changmin is vying for the label "Icon for First Love", a title which was previously regarded as being solely reserved for actresses.

Max Changmin, who is acting out the role of both Han Min Woo in his teens and Han Min Woo in the latter half of his 20s, has created and shown subtle differences between the 2 characters through 2 different types of tonal voice, method of speech and gestures etc. When he was a high school student, he was fresh and sparked fluttering tingles (in viewers), and when he is an adult, he still gives off a calm vibe while agonising over life on the other hand, leading the drama along well.

This is an entirely opposite appearance from his bright and cheery character in his first lead drama, SBS' "Paradise Ranch", and is also an almost entirely different charm from his burning competitiveness in KBS2 TV's "Cool Kidz on the Block".

The consideration of the production crew played a huge part in allowing Max Changmin to be able to show such subtle detailed acting. "Mimi" is a drama which is entirely pre-produced (ie no live shoots while the drama is airing), and completed its filming from autumn last year to the middle of February this year. Although it is a 4-part drama, a lot of time and effort was invested in it. To allow Max Changmin to be able to exhibit his emotive acting fully, the production crew did not put any limit on the filming time. Further, through the many script practices, the production crew gave sufficient time for Max Changmin to be able to totally fall into character.

Jang Hyun Jin PD analysed, "Outside of his explosive performances on the stage, he is usually an introvert who is detailed and quiet. It seems like it is because his type of personality is compatible with the character that the positive responses are pouring out."

[Trans] Another interview article about Moon Ga Young & Changmin ^o^

*spoilers alert.

MGY on Changmin: "He apologised a lot."

MGY: "I don't have a lot of dialogue. Compared to me, Changmin oppa was even more so (ie had even lesser dialogue). This is why I think it is even more difficult when we are acting. But even so, Changmin oppa was always saying sorry to me. Because seeing that my character is a spirit, we aren't able to communicate with each other, isn't it? If we have dialogue (with each other), it would have been fun to banter back and forth, but because we only gazed at each other, Changmin felt some regret about that. Although he kept saying that he was sorry that we could not act together (because of lack of dialogue with each other), even just by meeting each other eyes, it became a source of strength for me."

MGY also said that after her move to SM C&C, there are also increased opportunities to meet with singers who are on a similar wavelength with her. MGY: "It was fascinating, and enjoyable. Because there are many encounters with the idol friends, it also felt great to see them. It was also great to be able to act together with Changmin oppa. I was worried about ho the fans would see me, but I felt very thankful to the fans for even looking after me. (smile)"

[Trans] Mnet "Mimi" - 4 secrets revealed by the production crew

(1) Although the "Mimi Beauty Saloon" is a real-life beauty saloon, its real name is "Culture(문화) Beauty Saloon". It is situated in Busan's "Gam Cheon Cultural Village" and the filming made use of the items used in real life in Culture Beauty Saloon.

(2) Eun Hae's (she will appear in the 2nd episode tonight) posh apartment is situated in Gimpo and is the real house of one of the production staff. The stuff used for filming was also the items he used. After the filming ended, Max Changmin gave him a small present and he expressed his gratitude.

(3) Bicycle date in Episode 1 was at Gyeongju's Hwang Seong Park and Busan's Eulsukdo Ecological Park. In order to capture the best scenery, they shuttled between Gyeongju and Busan, and this scene was the best scene as chosen by the production crew. The crew also spread the road with 1 ton of fallen leaves.

(4) The computer used by Han Min Woo to draw his webtoons was a personal computer borrowed from a real-life active webtoon writer.

[Trans] "Mimi" actor Max Changmin, No trace of #ë™ë°©ì‹ ê¸°

*Spoilers alert

There was no trace of TVXQ in the Max Changmin who is appearing in Mnet drama "Mimi".

Max Changmin has taken on the role of Han Min Woo, a man who has lost his memories about his first love, in the drama "Mimi". The Max Changmin who had captured the viewers through the songs and dances during his luxurious stage performances has disappeared, leaving only the webtoon writer, Han Min Woo, who is struggling because of his memories.

In particular, on the broadcast on Feb 28, the main storyline comprised of Han Min Woo's meeting with Jang Eun Hae, and Mimi, who had not shown herself during that time, appearing in front of him. He is pulling his weight as the male lead who is leading the drama amidst such a storyline.

In reality, Max Changmin is an actor who has taken on the lead role in a drama before. Although he had shown his acting, which was not awkward, through appearing in "Paradise Ranch" which was broadcast on SBS in 2011, the ratings were low at that time and he didn't receive any huge response.

Although the Max Changmin in "Mimi" is a quiet character, there is a side of him who is chagrined. The Han Min Woo in the drama is a depressed man who has lost his drive as a result of losing his memory of the past. Max Changmin who is portraying such a character has gelled into the character naturally through his balanced emotive expressions. With such passionate acting, the fact that viewers are immersed in the show is an inevitable consequence.

Max Changmin had stood on the stage on KBS 2 TV's "Music Bank" in the afternoon as a member of TVXQ. However, a few hours later, he changed and appeared on the TV screens as an entirely different Han Min Woo in "Mimi". TVXQ's Max Changmin and "Mimi" 's Max Changmin had their own separate existence.

How about the ratings? I know they don't count a lot these days but I'm curious. ^^

Sorry, I don't know. But normally cable dramas don't do well in ratings unless they are extremely successful like Reply 1994.

[Trans] "Mimi" Max Changmin receives positive reviews for his unpretentious "analog emotive acting"

*spoiler alert

Max Changmin is receiving positive reviews for his unpretentious analog emotive acting, which does not seek to make himself look good (ie he is willing to look ugly as long as it can convey the acting). He has erased the luxurious appearance of him on the stage as a representative Hallyu star, reviews that he has established himself properly as an actor are pouring out.

[details about his role as Han Min Woo omitted] When asked "Writer-nim, what kind of person are you", just like his reply "I am a hurting, desolate and lonely person. I only know myself to that extent", he lived in a world of pain. Even so, his heart was still constantly agonizing over who he himself was.

Max Changmin, who is playing a difficult role of a man who has been eclipsed by darkness both externally and internally, has mastered a look of longing and a well-controlled tone, and has paid a lot of attention to all parts of the traditional emotive acting and expressed a detailed form of acting.

[spoilers about the 2nd episode omitted]

Max Changmin, who had to express the complicated feelings of Han Min Woo who was experiencing changes in his life, especially ruminated and digested well the acting of the difficult look which needed to contain various emotions, receiving an outpour of positive reviews. While expressing the indifferent look of Minwoo who usually does not concern himself with anything, when he finds a new clue about his past, he changes into a complex look whereby many thoughts are flashing across his mind in a split second. Following that, he gives off a contemplative look as if he is missing someone or something. In the 2nd episode, when a friend who knew him appeared, Min Woo, who had participated in a autograph session with a meaningless expression, changed into a subtle look which contained both complexity at being unable to grasp the situation, and yet happiness at meeting an old friend.

At the seaside coast when he was having a conversation with Eun Hae, on the night after Eun Hae sharply criticised his webtoon as "having no emotions, no feelings and also no impact", the subtle complex look he had when he was standing at the railing of the hospital was as if he was taking a cold hard look at himself, and was the highlight of the show.

The acting showcasing the indifferent and chic tone of talking and the subtle actions superbly brought out the Min Woo who had lost his happy past, and positive reviews are also pouring in on this front. The viewers have applauded his acting, "The delicate actions and dialogue had to really be acted out well and not be awkward, it seems like Max Changmin is doing it well", "Max Changmin's acting is on the rise", "The diverse emotions contained in his expression in the scene where he was standing by the rooftop railing is really hard to describe in words, and it left me awed", "His big yet mysterious eyes are his charm", "His singing is good, and his acting is good, is there anything he can't do well".

[spoilers about the 2nd episode omitted.]

Summary of Episode 2

The second episode is less confusing because it didn’t go back and forth between the past and present and just focused on the Adult Minwoo.

Minwoo got a call from the Team Leader but he didn’t bother to answer it. However, he looked at his calendar and noticed that he has to attend an animation event in Seoul. He changed his clothing and Mimi, who was in his apartment, turned to look the other way. He got in his car but Mimi was already inside the car. Mimi noticed that he was reluctant to attend the event and suggested for them to go to the beach. I’m pretty sure at this point that Minwoo couldn’t see Mimi but he seemed to change his mind and decided to go to the beach.

On his way to the beach, his Team Leader called reminding him of the event and this time Minwoo answered that he will attend the event. He made a sudden lane change to go back to Seoul and almost got into an accident. Suddenly, the strange man who was following Mimi i.e. the Umbrella Man, was inside the car with them. The Umbrella Man told Mimi not to worry as the driver of the other car will live up to 100 years old. Mimi said she didn’t want to send Minwoo ‘there’ yet. When the other car started beeping his car horn, we can see that Minwoo was actually alone in his car.

Minwoo got to the animation event and met Eunhye, the daughter of the President of the web comic company. Mimi and the Umbrella Man were there too, unseen by other people. Mimi asked the Umbrella Man to teach her how to touch things from the real world. The Umbrella Man told her that she has to be sincere. Mimi tried to touch a glass but failed.

When Minwoo was at a fan signing event, a guy who was getting Minwoo’s signature talked to him in a familiar manner and told him that they went to high school together. Minwoo, of course, couldn’t remember him and the staff asked him to leave because he was taking too much of Minwoo’s time.

At home, Minwoo seemed to suffer from writer’s block and couldn’t make any progress on his web comic. His mother came for a visit and started fussing over him in a joking manner. But she seemed to be very worried over him.

Minwoo also seemed to be very curious about his neighbour, the Fire Warrior. We got a flashback to the time when Minwoo had approached the Fire Warrior. The Fire Warrior seemed to be taunting Minwoo, talking to him informally and only adding the polite suffix “yo†after ending his sentence. “You don’t remember? … yo. Then just leave it like that. …yoâ€. He also told Minwoo to figure it out himself and that he didn’t want to tell Minwoo anything.

Minwoo managed to find out that the Fire Warrior usually comes to his apartment from 5.00 p.m. and will stay there until the 9.00 p.m. news is over.

Minwoo got a phone call from his Team Leader who was upset that the deadline has passed without any words from Minwoo. In his stressed state, he kept reaching for his medicine.

At the web comic office, Eunhye came up with the idea of having a web comic exhibition. The team finally agreed to exhibit the works of 3 experienced web comic artists and one new upcoming artist i.e. Minwoo. The Team Leader however could not contact Minwoo and Eunhye asked him for Minwoo’s phone number.

When Eunhye called, Minwoo was already unconscious due to overdose of medicine. Mimi finally managed to touch his phone and accept the call but couldn’t say anything. Eunhye then came to Minwoo’s apartment and managed to guess the door code to Minwoo’s apartment correctly based on Minwoo’s web comic title, December 8 (1208). She found Minwoo unconscious and sent him to the hospital.

Mimi and the Umbrella Man were in the hospital room with Minwoo. Mimi said she didn’t know that losing his memories will be so difficult for Minwoo and would like to find and give back the memories to Minwoo. The Umbrella Man told her that if Minwoo recovers his memories, Mimi will live inside his memories forever but Mimi has to leave Minwoo’s side. Mimi said she couldn’t leave Minwoo.

Eunhye went to visit Minwoo but Minwoo was not in his room. She went to Minwoo’s apartment and saw that Minwoo was about to go somewhere with his car. She got into the car and told Minwoo to just drive to wherever he wants to go. Minwoo drove them to the beach. At the beach, Eunhye told him that the first web comic she read was Minwoo’s web comic. Reading that web comic made her feel like the writer really understands her. His subsequent web comic, December 8, was such a surprise because it was very different from the first one. As a reader she would like to see it to the end and asked whether Minwoo can complete it.

Minwoo went back to the hospital after that. He started drawing for his web comic again but only half-heartedly. Eunhye wasn’t impressed and told him that his drawings lack emotions, feelings and impact. That night, Minwoo went up to the hospital roof followed by Mimi. Just as Minwoo was about to step to the edge of the roof, the Umbrella Man appeared. Mimi began to feel desperate and she begged the Umbrella Man to save Minwoo’s live. In exchange, she promised to leave Minwoo’s side. The Umbrella Man tapped his umbrella to the ground twice.

Minwoo then got down from the edge of the roof and went back to his room to sleep. The Umbrella Man told Mimi that they need to give Minwoo his memories back. He showed her a match box from a bar called Lupin, with 3 matchsticks inside it. He said that Minwoo will be able to see Mimi whenever the matchstick is lighted. However, there will only be 3 chances. If Minwoo still couldn’t remember after the third matchstick has been lighted, he will be in danger of his own confusing memories.

Minwoo was released from the hospital and went to the web comic office. His Team Leader told him that he was chosen for the exhibition and they have agreed to postpone his web comic until after the exhibition. They will also deposit money for the exhibition into his bank account right away.

Minwoo, who was in a better mood probably because of the money, went to his mother’s house. She wasn’t at home so he left his account book on the table. He also went into the store room, looked through his old belongings and found his old sketch book. That night he went to a dinner gathering with Eunhye and the other web comic writers involved in the exhibition. He got too drunk and went outside.

He ended up in a back lane and came across a strange looking bar called Lupin. When he went inside the bar, he was greeted by the Umbrella Man. He asked for a glass of scotch and reached for his cigarette. The Umbrella Man offered him the Lupin bar matchbox with the 3 matchsticks inside. Minwoo lighted one matchstick and there was Mimi standing in front of him.

Mimi was surprised and asked whether Minwoo can actually see her. Minwoo said yes and wondered whether they have met before. Minwoo also asked her why she was crying. Mimi said it was because she has like him from a very long time. He assumed Mimi like him because of his web comic and said that the character in the web comic was not him because he was just a fake. Mimi tried to convince him otherwise and asked him to look at her.

Mimi went on the stage and started singing the song that Minwoo sang when Mimi first saw him in the art room. After the song ended, Mimi began to do a cute and ridiculous dance. At first, Minwoo looked at her indulgently but soon he began to look sad and his tears fell.

He woke up in Eunhye’s living room. Eunhye told him she took him back to her apartment because he was too drunk. He asked Eunhye where she found him. Eunhye told him she was at the restaurant with him the whole time and she didn’t leave with the others because he wanted to drink some more. Minwoo got confused and asked whether Eunhye had sung a song for him. Eunhye thought Minwoo was still drunk.

Minwoo then excused himself saying that he just had a weird dream. Eunhye asked whether they are now friends and Minwoo told her they could never become friends. He then left and Eunhye followed him from a distance. After walking for some time, he reached inside his jacket pocket and slowly took out the Lupin bar matchbox.

End of Episode 2.

[TRANS] TVXQ Changmin wins highest praise from Korean media with acting skills on "Mimi".

On February 28th, the second episode of 4-day Mnet Drama, "Mimi" aired at 11PM. As the episode was unveiled to the viewers, many of the Korean media highly praised Changmin's acting skills. Changmin's role, "Minwoo" is a sad man who lost his memories of everything that happened after December 8th, 2003. It is not an easy task to act out Minwoo, who lost sparks externally and internally. However, Seoul Newspaper (online) stated that Changmin was able to act out a delicate, analogue character by expressing nostalgic feels and bitterness by acting in his eyes and gazes. He was able to distinguish his star aura as an Hallyu star and he was able to simply be an actor.

On the other hand, enews24 (online ver) posted an article with subtitle, "TVXQ Changmin, the emperor of performance returns at last". The article focused on Changmin, who has two different lives, as an artist who came back to the music scene with new song "Suri Suri (Spellbound)" and as an actor in "Mimi", who acts two different characters. The article mentioned that it is interesting to watch the present Changmin, who have been working actively in different areas. Again the article said that Changmin's role, in which he had minimum movement and lines came as a perfect match with the drama itself. They applauded Changmin's acting by commenting, "I am very much impressed with Changmin expression of emotions, which could not be described with one word." Many of the Korean media were impressed.

Isn't the studio version by the Girl from SM Rookies and Mimi version by Gayoung herself? I could be wrong though. Why?
