School Year Birthdays in Korea?

This is something I've been curious about for a while and I don't know how to word it so I haven't googled or anything and I'm just gonna ramble here and hope someone knows what I'm going on about.

Here in the UK, everyone born from 1st September to 31st August the following year is in one single academic year. Using myself as an example:

- I was born 9th February 1995

- I started my first year of school in September (the 5th, I imagine) 1999 and I was 4 years old.

- Everyone in my class and year had to have been born between 1st September 1994 and 31st August 1995 in order to start school that year.

I'm not 100% but I would guess we do it this way because of our academic school years starting in Sept and ending in mid-late July.

Do Koreans do it based on birthdates from 1st January - 31st December (i.e. everyone in 1994 is in a school year, everyone born in 1995 in a school year etc)? It seems like it would be pretty difficult to make friends based on the whole respect system thing, otherwise. And does anyone know what their school term dates look like?

How does it work in your country?

I looked it up, and for Kentucky it says:

"In Kentucky, under state law, all children must be enrolled in and attend school between the ages of 6 and 18. Children can enter primary school at age 5, but only if their 5th birthday is on or before October 1 of the current school year. A 4-year-old who will turn 5 by October 1 can enroll in primary school.

Beginning with the 2017-18 school year, the entry date changes from October 1 to August 1. A child who is 6 years old or who turns 6 by August 1, must attend public school. A child who is 5 years old or who will turn 5 by August 1 will be able to enroll in primary school. See the state law that outlines these requirements here."

In my country you enter kindergarten at any age between 1,5 and 6, but it's voluntary - not all children attend.

A child can start school st age 6, 7 or 8, 7 being the most common. Usually parents decide on the timing themselves.

There isn't any seniority rules, so age doesn't really matter.
