More in detail, what exactly is the difference between bi and pansexuality?

Recommended Posts

I've been often told by friends of mine who are bi and pan that bisexuality is being sexually attracted to 2 genders and pan is being sexually attracted to all genders. But how can one tell if they're bi or pansexual? How does one go about identifying most of their life that they're bi but then something happens to them and they realize "Oh wait, I'm pansexual!" I'm obviously heterosexual cisgendered trash but mean no harm or hate or want any anti-LGBT hate in the replies. I'm just trying to better understand because both orientations involve being attracted to more than one gender so of course I'd be confused about this.

pan likes boys, girls, transgenders etc they mainly like all genders

but someone saying 'I like everyone regardless of their appearances and sexes' is not pan because once you ask them if they like transgenders, they say no, and that's not pan

My pansexual fren said she would date: males, females, trans, etc.

Bi is just both male and female~

That is exactly where I get confused. I would think trans women are still women and trans men are still men. Transsexuality isn't an orientation. So wouldn't it still be possible for one to be bisexual if their partner were to go through a sex change? Aren't there some straight people with transgendered partners?

They're relatively the same. Both are attracted to all genders. Saying a bi person is not attracted to transgenders is debatable. A trans girl is still a girl and a trans boy is still a boy. Bisexuals can still attracted to them and that doesn't have to make them pansexual. I'm bisexual and I don't find transgendered people less attractive per se for example.

Pansexuals however are attracted to people regardless of their gender. They may refer to themselves as gender-blind, meaning that gender and sex are insignificant or irrelevant in determining whether they will be sexually attracted to others. I think that's what makes them different from bisexuals the most.

All in all the difference is very small and pansexuality can be seen as a branch of bisexuality.

Hope this helps! :D

I'm bi but I'm not into genderqueer people or anyone that doesn't identify as either a cis gendered male or cis gendered female. Someone that's pan, however, would still be attracted to them.

I hope that helps.

So there aren't bisexuals who are only into genderqueers and males or genderqueers and females?

The difference is murky sometimes, but I'd say gender and sex are irrelevant to pan. Male, female, transgender, intersex, whatever, it's all good if we love them. Not to say that a bisexual person can't like any of these, only that, for pansexuals, gender identity and sex just isn't important to us.

Yeah you're one of the users who've helped the most so far compared to the other replies. It's that very debate that fucks me over. The one on about bisexuals being able to be sexually attracted or not by those who are transgendered or gender queer. Also wouldn't pansexuals argue against pansexuality being a branch of bisexuality or is that fact?

Yeah I had a hard time understanding the difference too at first and even now I'm still confused sometimes. There's a very fine line between two sexualities and it's not always super clear. A bisexual can still like genderqueer/transgendered people. I guess it's more a thing of personal preference for bisexuals while pansexuals just don't see gender as a defining factor of if they'll like someone or not?

Lol some pansexuals might not want to call their sexuality a branch of bisexuality but since both are very similar it could be called that. It's still its own unique sexuality though, don't get me wrong. :)

I'm glad I could help you out a little at least!

No.

A bi person can like someone that's trans if they only identify as a man or woman.

But a genderqueer person combines both genders. So, being attracted to them conflicts with the bisexual meaning of solely being attracted to a standard man or a standard woman.

tbh there is none. bisexual has historically been used to describe what many would call pansexual today. not that there's anything wrong with finding new words to describe your sexuality/gender, i'm just saying.

it irks me how a lot of yall are basically saying "bi folks only like men and women, while pansexuals can like trans people too since they don't care about sex/gender" as if... binary trans people don't exist? lol

ikr it kinda insinuates that binary trans people aren't real men/women :donthinkso:

you can be straight/gay/lesbian/bi or whatever and still be attracted to trans people, it has nothing to do with orientation

Yo I feel I can't be bold enough to say bisexuality & pansexuality are the same without feeling I'll be bashed and called an asshole but I could agree on what you said about binaries and trans being treated like they don't exist. I had 2 transgendered friends and one of my roommates are one of those people who preferred to be called "their/them/they" (forgot what those people are called).

My thoughts exactly.

Me 3 (I think) LOL. I'm still learning about this stuff but I've always been exposed to LGBTQ+ related things so I might as well learn & understand more where trans and non-heterosexuals are coming from.

Your 'they/their/them' friend might have been genderfluid, agender/genderqueer or non-binary.

And yes it's good to educate yourself on the subject even when you're not lgbtq+ yourself (if you are im sorry omg)!

I'm not at all, just your typical straight cisgendered female. LOL I knew someone that identifies as non-binary but she didn't care what pronouns people called her, she identified as both male or female. My roommate is strictly "No I shall be addressed as they/them/their. I'm not a boy; I'm not a girl."
