RV'S "Rookie" reminiscent of T-ara's Roly Poly?

  • Funky instrumentals
  • Pre chorus that builds tension
  • Vocals that aren't too powerful but are piercing enough to cut through the music to be heard clearly
  • Ear worm chorus - repeating English words pronounced with an L "Loly-poly" and "Lookie lookie"
  • Quirky concept (T-ara had their 70s disco and RV has their Alice in Wonderland) - both had kind of cringe outfits tho lol

Could this be, like T-ara, Red Velvet's breakthrough hit? I wouldn't put it on the same level as "Gee", that song is untouchable and I highly doubt a group will ever come close to that level. But Roly-Poly was pretty damn successful and put T-ara on the map in South Korea.

I know the opinions on Rookie are divided, some hate it, some like it (I'm the latter) but I think what's important to take note of is that this song was made to appeal to Korean audiences. The rest of their album (Little Little, Body Talk, Talk To Me are a few) is super good! And if their filler tracks can't satisfy you then...

LMAO! I'm personally proud of RV and hope they continue to slay.

I don't think so. I mean maybe it'll be the same impact wise, but I don't think the songs sound similar at all. I also don't think either of the concepts were "quirky" Roly Poly was disco themed, and RV's was cute.

Also, Roly Poly was a dance hit. The choreo is one of the most memorable in kpop

It sounds more like another song but I can't put my finger on it. 4minute's Wait A Minute, maybe?

But T-ara's breakthrough hits were TTL/Like The First Time/Bo Peep Bo Peep... they already had several hit songs under their belt before Roly Poly dropped.

For RV I think their breakthrough hit was Ice Cream Cake. I don't think Rookie is going to become a hit on the level of Roly Poly, Lovey Dovey or Cry Cry but I don't get why some people are calling it a flop? It's doing well so far.
