It's really weird to call it 'Goblin'.. -Do international fans really use 'Goblin' as the English title..? -That's really cruelã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ They should've just called it Dokkaebiã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ -Goblin sounds like a name of a monster..ã… -Whoa.. Jeffrey Jung 19,680
So, can someone explain ? The word Dokkaebi is a Korean mythical creature it usually resembles troll/ogre they are usually born out of a transformation of objects so to equate them with the western Goblin is odd and out of place from Korean's pov and the drama version of DOkkaebi is actually very different from the actual myth they're comparable to Japanese oni

warukatta 6,359
So, can someone explain ? Apparently, the correct translation of the title based on meaning is "Guardian" not "Goblin". I think "Goblin" is like the literal/direct translation of the title (think google translate). Why is this being brought up now? probably because OP and/or a lot of Koreans just recently found out about this lol

S Q U I S H Y 1,770
idk why but when I saw the Goblin poster, it just gave me a different feel to the name and not the western troll. Idk if it's because of the typography but I feel like naming it Goblin gave it its own mystique and charm.

I think "Goblin" is like the literal/direct translation of the title (think google translate). But Dokkaebi isn't a guardian. The closest thing to a Dokkaebi is a Goblin. They're both mythical beings who usually are frightening. The writer just chose not to make Kim Shin look that way.
belleyeah 1,529
lol that's funny because changing the english title now would be messy for intl fans since we're all used with Goblin

warukatta 6,359
But Dokkaebi isn't a guardian. The closest thing to a Dokkaebi is a Goblin. They're both mythical beings who usually are frightening. The writer just chose not to make Kim Shin look that way. But that's what Koreans are saying... That "Guardian" or just the romanization "Dokkaebi" are more appropriate English titles of the drama since in Korea, the mythical creature ë„깨비 is not perceived as the same or have a similar image to the goblins that we know. I think that's why they find the literal/direct translation both funny and uncomfortable since the western image that the English word "goblin" gives around the world is not really an accurate word/description/reflection of the folklore creature that they know and/or the drama's character. Anyway, it's not that serious. Everyone's just basically laughing about the direct translation. I remember there was a forum post before where a user was saying that she was worried that international fans would call the drama "Goblin" (direct translation) and the commenters agreed and were laughing... and now we have this lol
