Did Disney make a bad decision on releasing Moana around Winter?

Recommended Posts

I mean dont get me wrong the movie is amazing and it did well

but in Disneys standard the success was mediocre.....

Despite the amazing critical reviews

its box office is only $500M+

and it's already nearing Feb.

After releasing Frozen around the same time which is in winter it was a major success

so I thought if they released Moana around summer it would've done amazing

what are your thoughts?

Considering it's budget it did an amazing job. Also you shouldn't compare it to Frozen but compare it to other Disney films in the 10s which is on par with other anination films. It might sell more than Tangled. Moana might have a summer DVD release as well.

I don't think they'll ever be a successful Disney animation film like Frozen for a long time.

You can't compare it to Frozen cause no other animated film comes close to the money it made and it's impact in recent times

You have to compare it to the other Disney films, and it actually did around the same as those. It made more than Wreck it Ralph and its close and might also surpass Tangled

Moana was given the same release time as Frozen anyway, the difference that Frozen became a phenomenon

I agree with this! Frozen was an outlier. Not comparable at all.

The home video release for Moana is slated for the end of March/April, like Rogue One, both Disney films.

Also that obsession to surpass the thousand million dollar barrier........

The problem is that you are comparing it with Frozen, whose mega-popularity was a surprise to everyone, you should compare with the movies in the Disney Revival era:

The Princess and the Frog: $267M

Tangled: $592M )

Winnie the Pooh: $33M

Wreck-it Ralph: $471M

Frozen: $1,274M

Big Hero 6: $658M

Zootopia: $1,024M

Moana: $511M

Moana is doing perfectly fine, perfectly average.

IMO, yes. The whole time I was watching the film, even though the animation is beautiful, I couldn't get into the beach concept. Even though it is not technically Winter, it is still far from Summer that it took me out of the film.

Of course it can't be compared to Frozen because the was a phenomenon on its own, but I do feel lie it's another Milan/Pocahontas where (besides critics and Disney fans) it didn't hit that well with the public.
