Birthday support ads? Why?

Why do fans take out birthday support ads? Do they actually help the idol in any meaningful way? I know some idols can't accept any kind of gifts, including birthday gifts, but why not do something like donate to charity in their name or do food support? It just seems like a huge waste of money and I don't see the point. The reason I ask is because one of my favorite fansites is doing a birthday support event and the proceeds are going to bus advertisements (and this idol CAN accept gifts).

What do you guys think about birthday support ads and would you ever contribute to them?

I think a large part of it is about showing off. Like idol A's fans can put an ad on a bus thus idol B's fans feel competitive to top that and thus collect money to get a ad on the subway. Shows money, fan-size, dedication, etc. Also, not just competition among different idol fans but competition between fansites.

They're just for promotions tbh, only rich fansites do it.

Hmm, interesting. The fansite I mentioned is probably this idol's second largest but second by a LARGE margin and there are only like 4 in existence. I never would have imagined they're rich. They must be personally rich.

Competition between fansites never occurred to me. Seems kind of selfish? Rather than spending money on things that would directly or immediately benefit their bias, they're promoting their brand as a fansite :/? Because I can't really see ads really helping an idol in any meaningful way.
