Your feelings on Kpop in International Media?

For a while, there have been people from all walks of life (as in, the realist thinkers and the delulus) who want more for their idols. "What is this 'more' you speak of?" You may ask?

Why international recongnition of course!

As y'all know, Kpop is beginning to have more international popularity. From news appearances to interviews, concerts, fanmeets, and even to English-language releases sometimes, there are Kpop artists trying to expand their markets and make bank in the West and also other parts of the East where places that have never had a Kpop market now suddenly have a huge one. While some people are all for it, others are very against it.

So OH, I'm curious: What do you think about Kpop's Global Expansion? (considering both the Eastern and Western Markets)

I'm fine with the expansion in Asia tbh. Many countries there are used to the idol culture, so it doesn't feel awkward at all. Also they're generally very well received.

As for the Western parts, I have mixed feelings about it.

I know that asides from PSY, Kpop artists often get the short end of the stick if they dare to do any activities in the West. They also tend to get made fun of a decent amount. I remember T-ARA having a pretty bad incident during a US performance, SNSD's America debut attempt not getting good reception (+Snoop Dogg was being a mess from what I've heard), and just in general it's kind of a cringe as how Asian artists are treated on those shows. I really don't want any of them facing that kind of humiliation. There aren't very many Asians in the media as opposed to anyone else too.

However, if any artist does manage to get popular in the West, then they're pretty much popular in a lot of places, and their music will most likely be decently well-known. There are probably some artists that are aiming to reach for those heights, and I think that there are very few groups that could have the potential to make it. Very few, but still a few nevertheless. And I'd be really happy if they reach those goals and they make it in the West.

I also get really happy when they make it on International Charts too. Or when they get positive news coverage. Or when an international media outlet interviews them.

Whenever they do concerts here or something, it's just kind of like how Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Pentatonix do concerts in Japan; they do it for the fanbase. Then they release an Asia edition of their albums and what's that for? The fanbase. Everything done outside of their main country is done for the fanbase that already exists there. Gaining new fans is merely a bonus. I feel like this is the absolute farthest a Kpop idol can get, but idk, I guess anything can happen.

I support it if that is what the artist wants to do.  It's an interesting topic for sure, it's actually what I'm writing my masters thesis on.  I'm focusing specifically on the U.S. market cause that's where I'm from, and I honestly would love a K-pop star to "make it" in the mainstream American music market, but there are a lot of issues holding them back.  PSY seems to be the only exception and was a breakout star so far, but it's sad listening to some people nowadays because they consider PSY as some random guy with a funny dance who was a one hit wonder when in reality PSY's career is sooooooo much more than that and he is an awesome performer.

I still think there are some acts out there now who have what it takes to make it if they play their cards right.  Also k-pop has been gaining a lot of popularity worldwide over the years, a lot thanks to PSY, and with social media developing the way it has and making it easier to share music, there is a good chance that K-pop could grow exponentially in the future.

Dont think itd get popular in the west..mainly because of the language the music is in. Most people knew Psy because of its music video, because it was visually entertaining. Dont see how people could become mainstream tbh... Though the fanbase will definitely grow. just not to the point where you would often hear them on the radio, but more of a subculture(?) like it already is.
