When Americans talk about how the troops are "fighting for freedom", what the hell do they be talking about?

this my last political thread but on g i was thinking about this all last night

so we all know that insane over-the-top military worship is a huge thing in american, particularly by conservatives. but it always confused me when people would say that "im proud to be american - the troops are fighting for my freedom!"

um...how so?

america already has its "freedom" in comparison to other countries. we aren't fighting off other countries from coming to america and invading us and successfully taking away all our rights and its not like they could do that anyways - so how are they "fighting for your freedom"? that whole statement is just a bandwagon type thing. i've asked people why they say that before and they're like "other countries aren't free but america is!" like america is the only "free" country in the world, not to mention the tons of discrimination over here

so what in the hell does "fighting for freedom" even mean....

I don't think it's fighting FOR freedom, but more so the sentiment is fighting/protecting the freedom we currently have that we did have to fight for in the past. And I don't know what circles you run in that have "insane over-the-top military worship". Literally everywhere I look right now is mostly against them.

Edit: Not saying that everything the military does is good. We need to keep out of other country's business. We're everywhere right now, and we shouldn't be.

i think they mean fighting to keep our freedom and also they might be reminiscing the old days (ww1 ww2 and all the other wars before that) like a "if that didn't happen we wouldn't be free so the troops fought for us type thing. I don't really agree with it because we are currently fighting battles we have no business being apart of. America is a piece of shit for doing that, mind ya business unless it's war. also like the user under me stated, it's propaganda.

oh you should come to the town i live in and the people in my classes. If I even said i was against military everyone would hop on my ass. most of them would be military vets or something. they take it very seriously. even when i lived in major cities, the general census was thank soldiers never critique the military.

its more of the older generation than new. personally i couldn't give a fuck less about the troops, but some of the people around me act like they're gods when most of them don't even go out into the field

Hmmm, okay. So there is some of that out there. I think that the basic everyday soldier is generally a good person. A lot of them go through a lot, so personally to me, it doesn't cost me a lot to give them some respect. Now, the people who control the troops, I don't care for them as much. I think our troops would be spending their time a lot better if we just dealt with our own business and stayed out of other countries. Us having bases in other countries that are peaceful and have nothing to do with us is crazy. But like I said, that's the people in charge's fault. The average troops are fine.

I'm not older generation and I like them well enough. Though they're not gods, not even close. I generally like the average soldier. It's the people in charge I don't like as much because they're putting our troops in places they don't belong. (Idk how to express myself, sorry. <3 )

yeah im not blame the soldiers for all that. i only ever feel gratefull towards the soldiers who participated in ww1&2 because they didn't have a choice. It's hard for me to feel anything for people who now choose to go and want to be thanked for it as if they were forced. And yeah I really wish America didn't do that dumb stuff, if it doesn't involve America don't push your way in, they are like that one friend who self-invited themselves to the party

True. The soldiers who were in WWI and WWII were incredibly brave. I don't think I could have done that. I get what you mean about today's soldiers. There are some who don't do a lot and expect recognition, but there are some who go because they genuinely want to serve their country. I think it's really a case by case situation for judgement. What you said about being a friend who self-invited themselves to the party is so true. What makes it worse is we're also the friend that does that and then doesn't realize that everyone is bitter at them.
