Song stated, “Our Somi only drinks Americano†in rebuttal and, to this, Yoo introduced a group of indigenous Africans from the coffee machine saying, “here is the highest quality coffee brought straight from the source.†Unfortunately, these “indigenous Africans†were represented by blackface.The Korean media, however, focused on the fact that Hong Yeseul’s normally cute image could not be seen in this get-up as she was one of the comedians in blackface.This was a different response from that of international viewers who were surprised, shocked, and some even offended by the nonchalant airing of what they considered racism. Here we go again. I thought Korean comedians were getting wise to this shit not being cool overseas. Korean media doesn't really care about it and there may be only a handful of Koreans who are bothered by blackface. If this incident of blackface becomes slightly problematic, they'll apologize to appease people then turn around and do the same thing again a while later. Here you go No, White Girls is not the same since there is no history of "whiteface" being used to degrade and dehumanise white people. Fat suits are an entirely different issue. cowgirlbebop 3,908 Posted February 5, 2014 Share Posted February 5, 2014 While there is not a large black population in Korea nor a history of blackface in the country like in the US, the problem is that Korea is so intent on shipping its popular culture outside of its borders, but they refuse to take into consideration the sensibilities of their foreign audience. They cannot have it both ways.: either they dont give a fuck about what foreigners think or they need to straighten up and act right. You cannot demand a group's attention, support, and ultimately money while at the same time insulting them. I would just chalk this up to ignorance, but this is a MAJOR broadcasting network and this is in no way the first time this issue has come up. Both whiteface and blackface is use for the same reason, but since blacks have been enslaved and so on in the past, they get away with a free pass to use it. Not just westerners can be egocentric. Besides, religion and morality are two different things so you can't expect everyone to follow religious belief or tradition, especially since religion and politics are separate in the US. There will always be some ignorant person offending people, but thinking a whole country is ignorant is ignorance in itself. Anyway, I think it will take some bad press or a huge scandal for people to change their ways. If someone doesn't have a good reason to stop doing something, they will usually continue to do it.
