Click bait in k-pop news? Why I never...

Taken from Beyond Hallyu:

As part of their ongoing legal battle, Kim Hyun-joong’s ex-girlfriend is set to stand trial in March accused of manipulating evidence and defaming Kim Hyun-joong. Yesterday, before she was actually charged, Korean news outlet OSEN published an “exclusive†leaked report detailing the prosecutor’s evidence and what she was due to be charged with. There could be arguments over whether it is responsible to report on this kind of information before the charges have actually been made but what was definitely irresponsible was the way Koreaboo misleadingly and inaccurately translated the report.

Firstly, for full context, here’s a version of one of the two reports linked to by Koreaboo which I have translated:

It has been reported prosecutors have secured evidence that actor Kim Hyun-joong’s ex girlfriend Ms. A manipulated evidence and lied about being pregnant.

According to OSEN on the 18th, during the criminal investigation process, prosecutors have been found to have secured evidence appearing to show Ms. A’s claims of a miscarriage resulting from an assault in May and an abortion are all false.

The prosecutor decided, after manipulating evidence by removing part of the content relating to a pregnancy test and miscarriage in Kakaotalk conversations about her self-reported pregnancy, assault and miscarriage, Ms. A lodged a civil suit seeking 16 hundred million won in damages against Kim Hyun-joong but Kim Hyun-joong counter-sued accusing her of attempted fraud in court.

Since then after turning the situation unfavourably against herself, prosecutors judged her to have committed libel against Kim Hyun-joong with a false interview saying she had had a miscarriage after Kim Hyun-joong’s assault.

It reported that Ms. A was never pregnant during the time she claimed to have been forced to have an abortion.

The Ministry of Justice ruled in the first trial last September that “Ms. A should  pay Kim Hyun-joong 100 million won†but Ms. A is currently appealing the decision.

Meanwhile Kim Hyun-joong will leaved the army and return to society on this coming February 11th.

What is being referred to in this article is not a crime that Ms. A has been found guilty of but evidence the prosecutor will be presenting to the court relating to crimes she was subsequently charged with. Crucially, this means these are all still just allegations and nothing has yet been proven or disproven in a court of law. Therefore if I were to write “Kim Hyun-joong’s ex-girlfriend manipulated evidenceâ€, that would be potentially defamatory because that hasn’t been ruled on by a court yet. I would need to say “Kim Hyun-joong’s ex-girlfriend is alleged to have manipulated evidence†or “Prosecutors are said to have evidence showing Kim Hyun-joong’s ex-girlfriend manipulated evidenceâ€.

The original OSEN report talks about “prosecutors†not “courtsâ€. A crucial difference.

Shortly after OSEN’s “exclusive†leak, Ms. A was officially charged. Here’s a short extract from a Chosun Ilbo article to show what a responsible report on that looks like.

Ex-Girlfriend Charged in Bitter Feud with Kim Hyun-joong
Prosecutors have charged the ex-girlfriend of singer-actor Kim Hyun-joong with attempted fraud and defamation.
The woman, surnamed Choi, is accused of fabricating text messages she exchanged with the actor and claiming that she had a miscarriage after he assaulted her.

Let’s compare this with Koreaboo’s article, shall we?
Firstly the headline:

[★BREAKING] Court Discovers Kim Hyun Joong’s Ex-Girlfriend Was Never Pregnant

(not ctrl+v-ing all of it, 'cause it's long as hell, read the rest and come to your own conclusions rather than relying poor reporting and shoddy translations!)

The media writing whatever they want to gain clicks. What else is new? That's how they work, unfortunately, not just Koreaboo, but also Soompi, Dispatch, the likes. Always poor or even wilfully misleading/wrong reporting and terrible translations. I don't get how people still believe them.

seems like it was translated by one of his die-hard fans who believe oppa is innocent no matter what

No actually, one of is main die hard translators made it very clear it was the prosecutor and has had consistently accurate information. They have on multiple occasions clarified confusion like him keeping parental rights and nothing about custody decided since Soompi and the rest reported as custody. They translate news sources, statements and link the original source.

Sadly I know this could be a possibility, the news don't be real or accurate. I was too happy too soon...

I still hope she get ruled liar (if is true of course, that I think is it), but with him going out of the army... if he didn't get out of her influence already he would drop charges soon. Let's see...

Curious, what makes you think she's a liar?

Wasn't this brought up during the first round of he said she said? Hyun Joon's defense saying and trying to prove the messages were false? And in any case, it's already been ruled (unless my memory is faulty and no ruling was made)so they'll have to appeal based on new evidence which would encourage me to think they're digging trying to hit something weak in her attack.

But I am talking about THIS PARTICULAR article and not other articles/their articles in general, because they did what the OP said - conveniently translated a couple of significant things differently

According to Soompi:

The previous nonindictment ruling has been overturned and his ex-girlfriend has been indicted on charges of fraud and libel. The prosecution has revealed that the ex-girlfriend submitted false evidence when she claimed she suffered from miscarriages because of Kim Hyun Joong.

So this shit show is far from over. :(

Curious, what makes you think she's a liar?

Lots of details.

For example: She disclosed kakao's talks with him two times, trying to proof he was a violent and so on. The first time, as is related by Dispatch, she went to meet them and show them the mobile phone, scroll in their kakao talk and show them  fragments of conversation with him. If you read the messages from that time not only show a very docile kim hyunjoong but also show her threatening him with getting an abortion if he don't marry her. The second time she disclosed conversations, she and her lawyer just quote randoms messages that he supposedly said, without showing source or anything, just quoting. In that messages suddenly he say things like "you are a whore that only keep getting pregnant" (or something similar, don't remember the exact words now), and he suddenly is very violent and said a lots of gruesome things to her.

For me the second round of messages are false. Because 1) If you have a batterer boyfriend that don't worry about getting verbally violent in kakao, you have lots of incriminating text to proof it, why she didn't show it in the first round of text messages? 2) like I said in one conversation he said "i will marry you but please don't abort the baby" and in other he's show taking a lot of interest in the baby and in his wealth. Why in the hell 8 months prior he would be the one pressuring her to abort and accusing her to be a baby machine? That doesn't make sense!! 3) if you have proof as strong as that in kakao conversation you just make a picture where his name is showing and show it to everybody (the privacy law doesn't apply in this case) why she didn't do it?

Another strange thing is that she always present medical records with strange holes. For example a x-ray without name or date, attached to a medical report in where no x-ray procedure is mentioned to have be done or prescribed or  an ultrasound without name or date.

Also the thing that she didn't have really have proofs for anything for a long time. For example  she keep presenting conversations with him as proof as the baby was his, when she could have easily just made a dam paternity test (the test was done in the end because the judge just get feed up and ordered it), or presenting as witness of his violence friends of her  that never have seen him in person and of course never have seen them interacting. I think she just don't have really proofs and is quite easy that she made up proofs in the end just as a desperate act.

Also I personally think that she is a mental abuser and they usually have a tendency to make up lies.

Lots of details, like I said in the beginning.
