Rio224 300
This is interesting, plus they are asking for civilian volunteers to join astronauts in starting a settlement on mars. This would be amazing....but all i know is i wouldn't wanna be the first test subjects to roll out to another planet xD. http://www.mars-one.com/

xXXXXXx 1,252
shouldnt they try something a little bit closer first, like the moon?

sane 16,342
I'm still dubious as to whether or not this is gonna actually happen, but I really hope it does 'cause that'd be badass as hell.
s4a 13,715
*sighs* As much as it'd be cool to live on Mars, money would be spent more wisely on studying moons that contain water and potential signs of life

Rio224 300
well there is no shortage of volunteers....i'm actually shocked how many people want a one way ticket to mars .__. timpa 6,547
I'd go on a one-way trip thru a wormhole or something to a living planet where you could walk around and do shit. I'm not going on a one-way trip to Mars where I'll live in a box until something breaks and I run out of air or food and then die.

silicon soul 19,457
*sighs* As much as it'd be cool to live on Mars, money would be spent more wisely on studying moons that contain water and potential signs of life But the prime candidates for large amounts of water in our solar system are ice moons like Enceladus of Saturn and Europa of Jupiter which are even further away than Mars - unmanned spacecraft take at least roughly a whole year, it would even longer for actual manned missions compared to months for Mars. I think until we can actually reach Mars, or at least make some sort of settlement on the moon, we shouldnt get carried away and put the cart before the horse

It's just for me, the Mars mission seems to be more for humanity's ego and trips to Europa/Enceladus would be for science. Plus, all of the atmospheric dangers of Mars...we already know how the planet is composed, that it used to have water, and much of how its composed. That gigantic ocean under the surface of Europa thing intrigues me so much.

I think scientists want Mars to be the home away from home (living in zero G on ISS has its own problems) rather than for scientific discovery or ego - the moon literally was a space race by Americans and Russians so that was definitely for ego lol). As for the ocean under the ice, we still don't fully know what lurks beneath our own oceans on earth, and what we do know of is freaky as hell. Imagining what (if anything) lurks in the those moons would probably fry our minds lol.

There is literally no other reason to do it as a rover can do measurements and other forms of scientific observation. We don't but I'd love to know both. I do think that the question of "is there life anywhere else?" is one of the most important questions that humans haven't answered officially and it'd be amazing to get that answer in my lifetime.
