best husbando xander could never

why have a horse when i could have supreme lobster all buttered up

Besides that, how do you think this FE mobile game thing will work out.

Tbh I married Xander in Conquest too.  But Ryoma is my fave. <3

I'm neutral towards the mobile game at the moment. I hope it's polished, but I'll keep an open mind.

Yaaaaaasssss :hurr:

lmaoooo I love Xander too but Ryoma >>>>>>

I'm not really sure how the mobile game will work. Judging from Nintendo's mobile releases, I think it'll be really fun at first but then get boring and old quick I mean look at Miitomo and I'm already sick of Pokemon Go

but hopefully it'll be interesting and fun. Since it's a mobile game I don't think the gameplay will be that hard.

I worked so hard to get his badge in.  :rlytearpls: Glad it paid off.

hey guys

I keep hearing good things about the FE series but there's so many games out there I have no idea where to start. So which one do you guys recommend I should play first? Also do I have to play any specific games in a certain order or are they all stand-alone?

I would recommend playing Fire Emblem: Awakening first tbh. And nah, you don't have to play them in any specific order, except for a couple of the games which are sequels like Radiant Dawn.

ok ty! Is Fates also good? Do you think I should play that after Awakening? Because I think it's the most talked about FE game from what I've seen

Yeah, Fates is good. It's split up into three paths. I've played 2/3 paths. I'll play the last one soon. Until then I can't give a full impression on it, I think.

But basically it went like this. The series was not that popular, despite having a lot of games in the series. Then Awakening came out, and it got a lot of good word of mouth, and eventually ended up selling several million copies. The next game in the series, Fates, became popular thanks to that boost in awareness basically. I think Awakening is simpler to start off with as a newbie, since it's just one story and one path. I think it's less overwhelming for that reason. Some of the game mechanics make it a bit easier too, I think. If you want to play Fates first instead for whatever reason, I would go with Birthright. It's the easiest.

Fire Emblem has always been popular. I know everyone has the spiel about how Awakening saved the series but it's really only the console versions that have ever underperformed. And it has always done better in Japan than in the West.

Wasn't Awakening planned to be the last release, though?

It was not making the numbers Nintendo had hoped for it later on and yes, Awakening was meant to be a final hurrah, which is why there's so many callbacks to the older games. This doesn't mean it was some niche series that no one had ever heard of. Hell, it had three characters in Smash Bros. before the mobile games ever even came out, and Roy was put there before 6 was even released. And Ike came two years after his debut game seriously underperformed which doesn't happen with unknown series.

Here are it's Lifetime sales in Japan:

  • Dark Dragon and Sword of Light: 329,087
  • Gaiden: 324,699
  • Mystery of the Emblem: 776,338
  • Genealogy of the Holy War: 498,216
  • Thracia 776: 145,600 (as of 1999)
  • Binding Blade: 345,574 (as of 2002)
  • Blazing Sword: 265,286 (as of 2003)
  • The Sacred Stones: 233,280 (as of 2004)
  • Path of Radiance: 156,413 (as of 2005)
  • Radiant Dawn: 171,924 (as of 2007)
  • Shadow Dragon: 274,786 (as of 2009)
  • Heroes of Light and Shadow: 247,248 (as of 2010)

All of the games have pulled more than respectable numbers, especially by today's standards, even the lower ones. Thracia 776 is a weird outlier, because it received a ton of praise when it came out, but having played it, I like to think that someone did their friends a favor and told them that the amount of blood, sweat, and tears that goes into beating it was energy best spent elsewhere.

The 3DS is also huge in Japan (it's outsold both it's most re, and I don't think it's fair to say that that hasn't contributed to part of Awakening and Fate's success.

I didn't mean it was super niche when I said that it wasn't that popular, just that it wasn't a big seller, or as big of a brand as it is now. I was mostly talking about the west when I was saying that, too. When a game is just made for Japan, and isn't localised, the publishers can only look at Japan's sales. But if they're making an effort to localise it, they are expecting it to sell in the countries they localise it for. If not, they usually just release it digitally nowadays, if it all. For example, The Zero Escape series never sold well in Europe as far as I'm aware. So Zero Time Dilemma was only released digitally here, whereas it was released physically in North America (and Japan, of course). It just isn't worth the investment or risk if it isn't going to at least sell decently, so there's no point.

And 3DS has sold fairly well, but it has sold almost half as much as the DS did. DS sold over 150 million units to date. Gaming is also down overall in Japan now compared to last generation, even if handhelds are an exception. So if we're looking at console sales, the FE games on DS should have been the ones that made the series take off. I don't think Awakening is the best in the series, even as a newcomer to the series myself. Perhaps it was a combination of it being more approachable as well as sheer luck that it managed to do so much better than expected.

The FEs on the DS were remakes. Poorly done ones at that (FE12 was the start of the avatar character and he/she is by far the worst in the series), and they were even noted for not matching up to newer entries in the series. And one of them didn't make it stateside.

And although the DS sold well, nearly every single one of it's million plus selling games is Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, Professor Layton or Dragon Quest, and this doesn't even come close to naming all the notable DS releases. The rest are made up almost entirely of random casual games. The numbers FE was pulling then was still very much in line with the average even then. And since it had never been a huge seller, it was unlikely they ever expected it of it to begin with. I don't know if you've played them, but the entries that didn't make it to Japan (outside of FE12, it's just plain garbage), but they're very obviously not meant for a casual audience.

Awakening is far more approachable and less strategy-based, and was really just in line with previous attempts to make the game easier, starting with 7, following in line with all the other big series. What is generally accepted as the hardest Final Fantasy entry was one of the very first ones, same with Zelda, same with Mario. These games obviously all still sold well in Japan, America didn't get many of them because of the perception that Americans don't enjoy hard games. The 2nd Mario game released here is actually entirely different than the one Japan got for that same reason. But I truly believe perma-death was just another level of hassle for most players, especially the ones in the West. I wouldn't be surprised if Fate's Phoenix mode was created more for us than Japanese players.

That's true, but Nintendo's handhelds have always sold well. Even the GBA that got replaced after 3 years sold 80 million. Of course that's probably part of the reason it did better than the home console instalments. The series just seems like a good fit for portables, too. And yeah, I agree, the perma death can be off-putting to people who aren't used to strategy RPGs.
