Wow. Is that good or just popular? If its good I need to watch...

I watched it as an in-flight movie

I wasnt able to watch it till the end, but yes I can recommend it, it's really good

(maybe spirited away is better imo, but its still a fantastic movie)

Good and popular, but the cinematography and the OST are the best parts of the movie. Top notch, don't just torrent it but wait for the dvd or watch it in cinema. But like just for every movie, just lower expectations before watching so you don't get disappointed later.

Congrats to Shinkai, last I heard he still didn't get the pay inspite of the movie surpassing expectations and being a blockbuster, but I hope he gets a nice cut now.

Well.. its not in cinemas here, Japanese movies never are in cinemas here. And DVD isnt aviable neither. Even most famous Ghibli movies are rare af.

So unfortunatelly I will have to stream it online or wait ages till it arives from USA and pray it will work in my player. :/ Seriously... Japanese movie makers dont want my money obviously.

I loved their banter and their cute fight after they figured out that they switched bodies but honestly it was a bit disappointing for me because some parts are a bit ??? to me.

like how they ended falling in love with each other

Maybe because I watched it after I just had a 3-hour sleep or because I had a super high expectation (due to the massive popularity) but the cinematography and the soundtracks were really amazing though.

creativity wise, sure Spirited Away is far better. but story/plot wise, Kimi no Na wa is better imo (also A++ OST). but both are good. we all know there will be a day another anime could dethrone Spirited Away. that day has come and Kimi no Na wa deserves it.

Is this news accurate? I read the reports yesterday that it surpassed Spirited Away worldwide but still is behind it in japan.

It's as you say

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2017-01-17/shinkai-your-name-tops-spirited-away-as-highest-grossing-anime-film-worldwide/.111141

As of this past week, Makoto Shinkai's your name. anime film has surpassed Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away film in worldwide box office earnings. According to the Box Office Mojo website, Shinkai's film has earned a total of US$281 million worldwide to beat Spirited Away's US$275 million.

In Japan, your name.'s domestic gross has yet to beat Spirited Away. As of Sunday, 143 days after it opened in Japan, your name. had earned 23.23 billion yen (about US$204 million), compared to Spirited Away's 30.8 billion yen (about US$270 million). That still makes your name. the fourth highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, the second highest-grossing Japanese film, and the second highest-grossing anime film.

I think there's a good chance for this movie to be in the cinemas in some countries it's been displayed even on an imax screen and I remember I also saw Spirited Away in the movies theater. It's really worthy to see in a big screen because of the animation and ost alone, I'd say it's better than spirit away in that regard this being a more modern film but story wise they're quite not the same.

They both share the element of magic and fantasy but Spirited Away can appeal more to kids or someone that's more into magic and fantastic worlds while Kimi no Nawa is a bit more mundane and also has this love theme so it can appeal more to someone more mature or who's more that into a romantic story. There's much more than that to Kimi no Nawa but those would be the biggest differences, animation wise is superb and the plot is also very creative as they mix a lot of things. So far I'd say there's not much difference between one or another in terms of production and quality and is just a matter of preference as they're both equally good.
