I hope Kris Wu picks up a TV drama soon :(

I have nothing against him preferring to work with 'legendary' names in the ent industry and dabbling in fashion/music but I personally wanna see him do a TV drama project. As a fan, I am proud all the big, high-profile projects he picks up but I hope to see him in something more 'approachable' soon like a TV drama. It kinda sucks to keep waiting for movies to be released, I kinda feel jealous with Luhan/Tao/Lay fans who can see their faves in something regularly aired (variety shows/dramas).

Hopefully he gets interested in doing a TV drama soon, even big stars like Hu Ge or Wallace Huo do it. It's also pretty bizarre that he hasn't done one yet despite being active as a solo for quite a while now.

I'm not a fan of dramas at all, they're so time-consuming and often not worth it. I hope he continues to do movies, doing a drama would be a step down for him IMO. I wish my fave had done a couple more movies instead of doing a drama; I don't plan on watching the drama anyway tbh lol.

It is in a way, a 'step down' as movies are usually more high profile than dramas.

What I notice though is that actors who have gone through dramas do experience a huge improvement in their acting probably due to the fact that they have to film a higher volume of scenes, to the point that it kinda hones your skill because you keep doing it.

But my main reason is because a long 40 episode drama with Kris means 1) it's gonna be a treasure trove GIFs & screencaps (lol) 2) more developed characters for him to play, especially if a drama is good. a 140 minute movie can only tell so much. 3) I feel it's more 'approachable' than movies. I love films but I don't get attached to them the way I do with TV dramas/shows. The last time I got withdrawal symptoms after a film was when Our Times was released which was more than a year ago.

It will have to depend on the drama though. A lot of dramas don't have "developed" characters (especially most of the dramas offered to ~fresh meats~). I also don't agree that actors who have gone through dramas experience huge improvements in acting.. actually I feel it stunts any kind of acting growth because you get used to a particular style and you get used to phoning it in since there are so many scenes and episodes. The challenge just isn't there IMO. I do want him in a drama eventually but it has to be something really, really good and not an idol drama.

I think it was Jackie Chan that said it best that what Chinese Ent market needs right now is a fresh script.

SOOO many drama/movies these days are playing EXTRA safe with the plots.

But I'm not sure a daring plot would go through the Chinese censorship.

I think China is a place a with a lot of talents and creativity but the government censorship department just won't let those talent flourish. Still remember the days when Rock and Roll was severely restricted by the government and also how the government was disatisfied with Hunan TV's "Super Girls/Boys" series.

Like you said, 'a lot' - but if it's a drama helmed by producers like Shandong, it's gonna end up better than many Chinese films. I'm a Kris fan but I do find him sorely lacking and inconsistent acting-wise (of course you'd disagree) so I feel he might have been biting off more than he can chew. But personally as a fan, I feel he needs to learn controlling his emotions with acting. He has a dominant screen presence, he catches attention easily onscreen because of that so the 'X-factor' is certainly there. It's just that after watching all his released stuff, I feel it's either he holds back a lot or throws out too much emotion during his scenes, especially the climatic ones. Fault could lie with the directors he's work with (I think Mr Six really showed the raw potential he has when he's directed properly) but I feel it's a skill he could and should hone if he really wants to make a mark.

But I find actors who mostly do dramas sorely lacking too.. like Li Yifeng, Yang Yang, William Chan, Zheng Shuang etc. which is why I think if improvement is what you want for him, the drama route isn't the way to go. He will not be honing his skills by acting in a drama lol. Like I said, the tendency is that acting in dramas stunts growth instead of encouraging it. The number of scenes to finish and the quality of the scripts prevent someone from actually improving.

The better way to improve would be to work with good directors in good productions which is what he's doing now.

I've mentioned about Shandong Productions or Daylight Entertainment - I want Kris to do the kinds of drama they produce.

All the people you've listed are technically newbies/idol actors who star in å¶åƒå‰§ (idol dramas) - they're mostly known for their celebrity. Even Hu Ge, Yang Mi and Tang Yan took quite a while to release themselves from this genre. But imho only Hu Ge is really making that transition to 'actor'. The more known TV actors would be Wang Kai (who had a spectacular 2015), Jin Dong, etc.

But I kind of want him to see him do dramas like Nirvana in Fire, Love Me If You Dare, Ode to Joy, Battle of Changsha, The Disguiser, Scarlet Heart. Stuff that will challenge him.

I wouldn't put down Li Yi Feng down either. His recent project choices may not be that impressive but I remember in his early career, his acting was amazing. He would play second lead roles but would steal some scenes because he was pretty good. It feels strange on why I barely see that early potential nowadays.

Like I said, imho great/well-known directors =/= good shows (see Zhang Yi Mou's Great Wall) I would be fascinated if Kris would be a bit experimental and try working with the younger, up and coming directors and actors.

I also dream of him eventually being directed by Kong Sheng. Hu Ge's transformation in Nirvana in Fire compared to his past projects was amazing. I wonder how he can unleash Kris' potential (which we already saw in Mr Six).
