What do you think reactions will be if Kris Wu gets cast as Shang in Disney's Mulan

Boy got them Hollywood connections, he's active in China and speaks fluent Mandarin + English (pretty much the kind Hollywood execs want. Relatable to the West but with a respectable amount of fanbase in China/Asia. It's the fanbase that actually gives him an edge over Godfrey Gao, imho. My bets for Shang are these three: Godfrey Gao, Aarif Rahman or Kris Wu - either of them. It's a really tight battle between Aarif and Kris in my head. I think Aarif's visuals would appeal to Hollywood more, but Kris has a more 'disney' feel, I dunno. Both of them are fluent in English as well.)

But in the event that Kris does win the role, how will the following react?

  • his fans
  • Onehallyu
  • EXO-Ls
  • ..etc

Would be funny though if they promote in Korea as well since Kris speaks fluent Korean lol

I don't see it happening lmao. He doesn't fit the role at all and hes not that prominent in the US yet. Not even close.

Asian-American actors are actually unhappy that Hollywood studios prefer to cast Chinese actors with a fanbase in China for the roles instead of them. Theoretically, a lot of these Asian-American actors would certainly perform better on those roles more but it seems Hollywood is really after that yuan and the publicity. I remember reading somewhere it's because casting English speaking celebs from China was hitting two birds with one stone: diversity and star power/publicity. The Chinese box office alone would allow to recoup the cost.

The reason why I see him or Aarif getting cast is not because they 'fit' the role to a T (though seriously, this happens with Hollywood too when many actors were thought to be unable to pull off some roles but eventually do) but because of this combo: they speak English + marketable in China/Asia

Disney is in a position where they can cast someone no one knows and people will still see it cause of the Disney brand.

Sony on the other hand can't do that, so I feel like your thinking fits more with Sony's Mulan. Also, given the fact that Sony and Wanda Group have signed a deal to promote their big films in China you might see someone like Kris get casted in Sony's version.

Oh seems like so!

But then they casted Emma Watson, a pretty high profile actress for Beauty and the Beast. But since Wanda-Sony signed something, yeah, Kris seems he'd be more of a shoo-in for the Sony ver

Aarif isn't exactly a huge box office draw in China though his build would fit Shang more. But Shang isn't even in this version so moot point.

To answer your question, some people will be happy and some people will be pressed (several already on this thread LMAO). There will also be racist white tears.

A lot of the Asian-American actors who are complaining aren't even Chinese and they wanna get cast in the movie... I understand Asian roles in blockbuster movies are few and far between but promoting themselves to play a Chinese character when they're Korean/Japanese/1/18th Chinese is reinforcing the stereotype that Asians are interchangeable and if they really care about real diversity then they wouldn't be campaigning for themselves instead of pushing actual Chinese actors for the roles.

Bulkiness can be easily fixed (the male lead will prob be wearing armor anyway) lol but at least Kris has the height, face, language skills, talent, appeal and connections to be seriously considered for the role. "Prominence in the US" isn't important since there aren't a lot of prominent Asian male actors in the US anyway and especially one who is young and fits the description needed. He's certainly more prominent there (even if a little) compared to his peers.

Funnily enough, Kris is attending a Disney event this week in China.

i wish he did, i think i would definitely watch it...he would be so badass and he gives off that badboy/cool aura. the producers of the movie said something about life action Mulan not following the exact storyline as the original movie
