re: 2ne1 as "artists"

Just a random thought I've had kicking around for a while....

Every now and then I've seen 2ne1 referred to as "more" than just an idol group; I'm not accusing Blackjacks (here) of this, but I'm sure I've seen it on NB-translated article comments sometimes.  I've been wondering why that was, since I think it's obvious to everyone that 2ne1 have very little creative involvement in their music (even compared to many other girlgroups) which I think a lot of people consider the main distinction.

Part of it could just be their affiliation with Big Bang, but I think it's actually because 2ne1 rarely does anything outside of music.  They don't have members that act (anymore), they (rarely) appear(ed) on variety.  And because their songs and performances are generally appreciated in SK, their appeal there comes off more as if they were "legitimate" musicians, even if they're still manufactured. Like, I do think of Britney Spears as "really" a musician, whatever her abilities are; she became popular because of her music and music videos, not because of her rare acting excursions (Crossroads?)  Of course she is completely manufactured, but it's different from the kpop idol cliche, where you often gain your fanbase through a lot of other means aside from your music.

It doesn't seem like a fair assessment to me since Dara is just about the most popular member and (her physical attributes aside) this is presumably in part due to her extensive use of social media in connecting with fans, but even real musicians use social media (hi, tiger jk!) so I can see why knetizens wouldn't use that to discount 2ne1 as "artists".  I also remember a (knetizen) comment that showed up while TBF was being promoted, which was something along the lines of "I used to admire them, but now I think I've seen CL's limits as an artist and a woman" (the last part was pretty unnecessary, but the article was about her stagewear, so. :._. :)  So now that some of their music/performance have not been appealing, it seems like their "artist" status has been affected even in SK.

What do people think?

Bom is the most popular member actually.

Idk YG groups are usually referred to as "artists" in South Korea. Maybe because their music quality is usually better and more solid than others?

I think it's supposed to be between Bom and Dara, that's why I said "just about". XD

Their music is well-received, but other top groups often have a string of well-received hits, and people don't start calling them artists or anything.

sadly but in negative way.

tbh, i only like 2ne1's lively music and badass charisma but they are no different to other idol group. they can't pass as a genuine artist if you want to say that. genuine artist write their own song, compose, and unique style.

Not in a negative way though. There was a great period of time where Bom was praised for her voice because it was unique and she is good at variety.

Can't we have even one positive thread about 2NE1 anymore?

I'm not being negative.  It's not a big deal to me if 2ne1 doesn't compose or write, particularly if it seems like YG prevents any such songs from being included on their albums.  Even in groups where someone composes, it's not like everyone does.  But it's curious that 2ne1 gets this label attached to them when others do not.

Why don't you start such a thread if you think the forum's lacking in them?  (I'm sure there will be more when the more teasers+the album comes out, anyway.)

'Netizens' say a lot of things that don't make sense. Exhibit A : TaeYang pulls off the black concept very well.

okay. maybe i'm wrong since i often hear negative about her.

About her face and vocals. And a lot of unwarranted hate for many little things but outside of bandwagon hating people know she's sweet with 2 extremely successful hits (Not to mention many good featurings).

i find bom's voice as rather unique than what vocal "expert" says about it.

I know your not bashing, but it's still not positive.

And I've tried. I always just get pointless hate comments.

well, YG's media play succeeded all these years in brainwashing guillible  kpop fans and making them believe 2ne1 are more than just ordinary idols and that they're one of the most talented groups. but media play can only take you so far when people start seeing with their own eyes and hearing with their own ears how lacking that group is creativity imput wise and talent wise.

An artist is a performer, whether they be a singer, actor, dancer, rapper, etc... So I tend to refer to every idol group as artist.

i think what OP means is not the ordinary artist. but the artist who really does his/her own music. like writing his own lyrics, making her own choreo, unique (unheard rapping style), composing or blending his own music. something that isn't a normal performer is usually doing.

It's because they're promoted as the anti-idol. It's basically their image and biggest appeal

What kind of things did YG do to effect this?  Aside from calling the members unnattractive. ~.~  And simply claiming that he picks people based on talent.

Oh... that's unfortunate.  It felt like that a bit after b.a.p's issues last year, there were some flouncings and I think a general retreat to the artist thread.  (And then non-fans were like "they're obviously not popular anymore, I never hear about them" and I'm like "....")
