Defendant03-00206a.jpg

There is a huge difference between the idea of questioning everything or nothing. Jung-woo has become white noise, rendering his questions something to be ignored, with those around him taking his guilt for granted because they consider his case closed. His struggle to comprehend what he can’t remember is exhausting, but somewhere deep within, Jung-woo’s commitment to the truth still flickers.

It is somehow exhilarating to slowly discover the truth at the same time that Jung-woo does. That journey just became less lonely as Jung-woo has finally found an ally in public defender Seo Eun-hye, the one person who won’t ignore him. Unfortunately, Jung-woo’s situation looks like it’ll get worse before it gets any better.

Three days before the Wolhadong murder incident, Min-ho visits Sun-ho’s memorial. Min-ho sees his own name and photo behind the glass and whispers, “Hyung, rest in peace now.â€

The chief prosecutor meets with his superior, who is anxious to close Min-ho’s suicide investigation, complaining that Jung-woo has made himself Chamyung Group’s worst enemy. He is shocked when a call alerts him about an arrest warrant and demands to know Jung-woo’s whereabouts.

Jung-woo avoids an incoming call from Chief Prosecutor CHOI DAE-HONG by throwing his phone into a bag, along with the phones of his entire team. He provides their excuse for missing Prosecutor Choi’s calls, “We’ve gone to the sauna today.â€

As the team rides together in a van, Jung-woo shares his plan to arrest the Chamyung president. One of the team members, Investigator GO DONG-YOON, worries about the assistant prosecutor general’s reaction when he finds out. Jung-woo examines an ID card for the real Min-ho, noting a fingerprint on the back.

Min-ho tours a Chamyung paper plant with foreign visitors, enjoying his new role as president. A call alerts him to the arrest warrant based on fingerprint evidence, just as the investigative team arrives at the facility. Min-ho dismisses his visitors before running into a building, with Jung-woo and Investigator Go close behind him.

Min-ho eventually comes face to face with Jung-woo, who holds up the ID card that bears his fingerprint. A steam cloud briefly obscures Min-ho, who grabs onto a hot pipe, screaming as he sears his fingertips. He raises his bloody and burned fingers, laughing in delight as he tells a frustrated Jung-woo, “You’ll never be able to catch me.â€

His hands covered in bandages, Min-ho later welcomes visitors to a Chamyung event at a hotel, explaining his injuries away as a factory accident. He notices Jung-woo observing him from a distance and invites him to talk. The two are alone outside when Min-ho steps closer to Jung-woo, whispering, “That’s right, I’m Cha Min-ho. Prove that I’m Cha Min-ho.â€

New revelations mean that Jung-woo has to reassess who’s on his side and who he can trust, and he struggles to find clues to jog even the smallest pieces of his lost memories as time begins to run out before his next court date. While Jung-woo gathers his resources on the inside, Eun-hye tries to figure out how she can help him from the outside—but first, she has to find a way to convince Jung-woo that he needs her by his side.

EPISODE 4 RECAP

Defendant04-00006.jpg

We go back to one week before the first trial. Jung-woo works on his case notes while the others in the cell read or play cards, although Sung-kyu is absent. The eldest prisoner, MIL-YANG, asks Jung-woo if he’s recovered his memory at all, and Jung-woo says he’s recovered a little of it, but there are many aspects of the case that seem suspicious, so he’ll have to keep doing research until the trial.

In his office, the warden speaks with someone on the phone about the upcoming trial, and that person suggests something which makes the warden smile as he agrees before making another phone call.

During their rounds, one of the guards finds cigarettes in Jung-woo’s cubicle; he swears they aren’t his, but they drag him out anyway. Tae-soo watches silently from the hallway as Jung-woo protests that his trial is coming up, and begs to be allowed to take his notebook with him. The officers ignore his pleas and throw him into solitary confinement, and the head of security gives Jung-woo’s notes to the warden, who smiles smugly.

The warden has lunch with Min-ho and passes Jung-woo’s notebook to him. When the warden asks why Min-ho is going so far, he says it’s because he blames Jung-woo for his brother’s suicide. He says he’s heard the man lost his memory a few times, and that it would be nice if he could lose it again before the trial. The warden assures him that even if Jung-woo doesn’t get amnesia again, there’s no way he can prepare for the trial now.

In solitary, Jung-woo bangs on the door in despair, asking to be let out. “You can’t get out,†comes Tae-soo’s voice from outside. Jung-woo explains that the cigarettes weren’t his, but Tae-soo already knows and says that for some reason the warden and head of security hate Jung-woo as much as he does. Jung-woo pleads for his help, saying he doesn’t remember anything while promising that he’ll find out who did it and prove it in court. Tae-soo just shakes his head.

“If I did it, I’ll pay for my sins,†Jung-woo promises. “But to do that, I need those notes. Help me, Tae-soo.†The younger man replies that last time, he only got out of solitary because he lost his memory, and it’ll likely be that way this time too.

One day before the first trial. Min-ho calls the warden to ask if Jung-woo’s amnesia has recurred yet, and the warden grumbles that it’s not like he has any control over Jung-woo’s memory loss. The head of security reports that Jung-woo is still the same, and the warden says in frustration that it’d be easier if Min-ho asked them to kill him instead. Well then.

Ji Sung Promises Frustrations Will Be Relieved In Next Week’s “Defendantâ€

ji-sung-3.jpg

Just as ratings for “Defendant†have been sky-high, frustrations for the SBS Monday-Tuesday drama have been mounting as well. The walls have been closing in on Park Jung Woo (Ji Sung) so much in the past few episodes that it is a wonder how he will ever get himself out of this seemingly inescapable hole. There have been too many mysteries, and not enough answers just yet, but Ji Sung has promised that in next week’s episodes, viewers’ frustrations will begin to be relieved.

“Defendant†is a twist on the memory loss trope, with an extremely intelligent prosecutor who, for some reason, loses only the memories of the day his wife and daughter were killed. This setting breeds the mysteries that drive the drama: how did Park Jung Woo lose his memory, and why did he forget only that part?

Equally intriguing is the arc about the twin brothers Cha Min Ho and Cha Sun Ho (both played by Uhm Ki Joon). Cha Min Ho has thus far been successful in masquerading as his dead brother, but while their faces are exactly the same, there is still a difference in their experiences, memories, tendencies, eyesight, and fingerprints. These are interesting clues about his real identity that will continue backing the villainous Cha Min Ho into a corner, possibly leading to his downfall.

Ji Sung’s heads up that the upcoming episodes will shed more light on the puzzles is definitely comforting, but more than answers, what viewers are probably looking forward to the most is the time when justice finally prevails. It might be because of the current political climate as well, but in any case, viewers are rooting for Park Jung Woo the whole way as he refuses to let go of the slightest chance of vindication, even when the odds are impossibly stacked against him.
