Sen-ri 1,506
So I've been following kpop for a while, but what are the exact definitions of the roles in groups? I know there are things like visual, face, vocal line, dance line, rap line etc But what are the differences between main vocal and lead vocal? And what's a sub-vocal? Are they lower than a vocal or higher? Does the visual ever change? Or is it only the "face" of the group that can change over time? And should a main vocal get more lines than a lead vocal? Lion Fart 70
I guess main vocal normally sings choruses, and most challenging parts of the songs, lead vocal get challenging parts too but not as much as main vocal, which is the ''main'' singer of the song, tends to be the best of them as well Visual is the prettiest member of the group, face can be different person or the same person Sub vocal is a vocalist which is there just to back up others, not very good at singing I guess. vocalmonster 3,603
Visual is the best looking member Face is the person that kinda represents the group, the most known person to the public E.g junghwa is exids visual but hani is the face of the group
Zaiku 883
Main and Lead in their context is just best and 2nd best.
pretty_angel92 44,530
Main vocal- they sing the hardest parts, including high notes. they also have the most lines (most of the time) lead vocal- basically 2nd best, they often sing the chorus with the main vocal as far as i know, visual role never changes. but yeah, face of the group can change i think sub-vocal is the lowest vocal position, aka, the worst singer in the group and yes, of course main vocal should get more lines than lead vocals. it doesn't need to happen all the time though

Main: better singer, more lines- lead: good singer but less lines Regular singer usually lower vocal with no strength but not completely tone deaf The visual is the visual, better looking acording "korean standard" , the face is the one who represent the Group, Ex Sistar: Dasom is the visual hyorin is the face of the group THE MAIN VOCAL ALMOST ALWAYS GET MORE LINES THAN THE LEAD VOCAL
xxsuperjayxx 2,439
Main vocals should be the best singers and usually have the more challenging parts in a song. Doesn't necessarily sing the most lines. Lead vocals are second best singers in the group. Sub vocalists are the weaker singers and usually will have the least lines. When people explain their faves as just a vocal they usually mean sub-vocalist. Normally there is an official visual member. That member could also be the face of the group but imo it could change based on popularity between the members and public recognition so that visual =/= face of the group. You expect the public to like the visual because they're the eye candy but if another member becomes more popular in the public eye, I think they can become the face of the group. As I said, the main vocal doesn't necessarily have to have the most lines since they sing the more challenging parts of a song. It's quality over quantity with main vocals. But at the same time, I don't think it's fair if the best singer is singing 3 lines and someone else gets half the song on their own.
Sammy Lee 2,635
Main Vocalist: usually the best voice in a group, with the best techniques, meaning they have the most challenging parts but also can somehow 'carry' the song and they have the most lines... Lead Vocalist: Most of the time, they have a good voice, their role is also important but they do not carry the song like the main vocalist does.. Sub Vocalist: usually their voices are just..MEH, for lack of better terms... most of the time have weak techniques, but other people might like their tone, and usually don't get a lot of lines in the song. Visual: Usually fits the criterias of having good looking features according to standards.
