How did you find out what you wanted to do?

Well in some way you could say I was always destined to work with money in some way, even as a child that was clear given my future plans at the time.

Also my high school had a good (mandatory) educational program to help you choose what to do after high school, during this course I did a lot of tests to determine what to do.

Honestly I was just lucky since they all had conclusive results for me and all pointed into the same direction for me being, getting a bachelor's degree in accountancy.

So I am currently studying for this very degree and I quite like the study itself.

So yeah in my case finding out what I wanted to do was very easy, but most people aren't so lucky.

But really the best advice I can give you is to figure out what your skills and interests are and finding a career that suits them.

It took me a few years to figure it out as well.

It didn't take me until my first year of college to figure out what I wanted to do: Linguistics!

My love for languages is huge and learning them is my greatest passion.

After college, I plan on teaching in another country for two years or so then after that, I'm not sure but I know it will be something with languages!

You don't have to be in a hurry to figure out what you want to do. It takes times. Even if you graduate college and you don't know what you want to do, that's okay.

To help you out, think of something you love to do the most. Something that makes you and your heart happy.

It shouldn't be about what has the highest paying job or what your parents want you to do or any other thing like that.

It should be about something you will enjoy now and in the future and that you'll have a great time doing it because it'll make you happy!

Take your time, don't think about it much and then choose whatever feels right at the moment. There's nothing much to do if you've never felt passionate about one specific thing. I really envy people who knows exactly what they're going to do with their life ...

I don't know what I'm doing with my life. One minute I'm studying this and next minute I'm studying that and it sucks because everything I study I'm really bad at and I don't enjoy. So I'm just lost right now trying to find my place in this world and hopefully I'll my place sometime soon because I'm eighteen and I fear I may end up homeless.

Finished my A Levels and didn't really know what I wanted to do, so I went to do History at uni.

Finished my degree, still didn't know what I wanted to do, so I did a Masters in History.

While I was doing that, I volunteered at my local museum in the Education department. Don't know how, but I went from doing that to wanting to be a teacher. So I went back to uni to do a PGCE, and now I'm in my first qualified year.

I'd love to be in the museum education sector really, I guess, but it's very difficult to get a full time job. Maybe it'll be something I think about more in the future. For now I'm happy bossing around little children :D

omg we took the same route, history BA and MA. I really don't want to be a teacher though but it's like there's nothing else to do with these kind of degrees... I'm still jobseeking and have been for nearly two years.

O.O snap!

Did you specialise in anything? I loved medical history. Gruesome surgery, lovely pictures of skeletons, PLAAAAAAAGUE lol.

History's a pretty good degree to have I think - it shows off a lot of skills. Least that's what everyone told me. I feel your pain - before I went down the teaching route, I literally had no idea what to do and was just sending applications out to random places that I really didn't want to work at. And then no one bothered to get back to me -_-

I wish I had some actual advice to give you. Other than, if you don't really want to teach, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. It's the kinda job you have to love to do, and even then it's stupidly stressful.

What kinda thing are you looking for?

I did International Relations for my MA.

I am looking for anything that actually pays me money I can live on... I don't care at this point. it's been too long. I don't have room to be idealistic anymore. all I've had is office admin work, which is tedious but easy, so I just keep looking for that

That's the kinda thing I was looking for, too. I've got a friend in a similar situation as you, too. He's been looking for aged but doesn't really know what he wants to do.

Pisses me off that we spend all that time / money studying, just for our cv to be placed on a big pile of 'no' -_-

i wish you luck with your job search!

me too, it's so frustrating... I regret bothering with postgrad when I could have just started my jobsearch earlier since it's basically been completely useless to me. might actually have had some savings by now... oh well. thanks!

It took me 2 yrs to decide after finishing secondary/high school, I was always interested in science or biology in particular. My mother wanted me to study medicine but I am not that smart but now I wish I put more effort back in school. I think its good if you know what you want to study before hand.
