A poster on Dramabeans pointed this out:

I like the theories of Deok Hwa but also adding to the Deok Hwa mystery if you look at a promotional picture he is in the middle. Usually characters like his do not tend to be involved in the promotional pictures as they are not that important.

He is in the middle, higher than everyone else, and looking off in the distance, not at the camera like everyone else…

To think Samshin Halmeoni (the lady in red) is not in the poster despite being an important character herself...

Also some of my own theories:

Deok Hwa says (in the scene where he drives Eun Tak) that he is named after Asian superstar Andy Lau (Lau Tak Wah if you're from HK or Liu De Hua if you speak Mandarin). I don't think that's a coincidence either.

Andy Lau is known as one of the Four Heavenly Kings å››å¤§å¤©çŽ‹ (along with Leon Lai, Aaron Kwok and Jackie Cheung)

Four Heavenly Kings (四大天王) is a Chinese term created in June 1992 by Oriental Daily News to refer to the four biggest male superstars in Hong Kong at that time: Jacky CheungAndy LauAaron Kwok and Leon Lai.[1] They dominated entertainment not only in Hong Kong but throughout the Chinese speaking world in the 1990s, having very successful singing careers (in both Cantopop and Mandopop) as well as acting careers well into the 2000s. The 1990s is sometimes called the "Four Heavenly Kings Era" in Hong Kong entertainment because their songs swept the awards of Top 10 Songs of the Year during a 6-year span.[2]

The term Four Heavenly Kings originally refers to 4 gods in Buddhism.

In Buddhism the Four Heavenly Kings:

The Four Heavenly Kings are four Buddhist gods, each of whom watches over one cardinal direction of the world. In Chinese, they are known collectively as the "FÄ“ng Tiáo YÇ” Shùn" (simplified Chinese风调雨顺traditional Chinese風調雨順; literally: "Good climate") or "Sì Dà TiÄnwáng" (Chinese四大天王; literally: "Four Great Heavenly Kings"). The Hall of the Heavenly Kings is a standard component of Chinese Buddhist temples.

I think we're unto something here. This might be the role of a lifetime for Sungjae wow.

It's so amazing how much thought has been put into Goblin. If this were a typical drama, Deokhwa would have just been that funny character put in to make some laughs. Usually those characters aren't included in promotions so Deokhwa's character is definitely so much more deeper than we expect.

I always thought why he was in the posters with the leads when he seems like such an unimportant character but when it was revealed he was the butterfly.. I understood why lol.. he is god himself *.*

Also Sungjae rejected the MDBC role (which eventually went to B1A4 Jinyoung and we all know how huge that drama was) to do this show. Now if indeed he is the ultimate god...it's kinda obvious why. This role is so much meatier.
