tiktokcheekaboom 184 Posted December 31, 2016 Share Posted December 31, 2016 So I've noticed that there's often talk about "quality music" in Kpop, and even though music taste is subjective, there seems to be some sort of unspoken + unanimous agreement that certain idol groups produce "better" music than others (eg, Big Bang, Black Pink, Fx). For example, I've seen many Black Pink fans state that Whistle is a better song than Playing with Fire, but personally I think those two songs are too different to compare, so it's hard for me to agree when people state emphatically that certain songs are of "better quality" than others. Also, it seems that catchy songs that explode in popularity (Gee, Cheer Up etc) are generally accepted to be of lesser quality simply due to their public popularity, but then why would people still love them? I'm genuinely quite interested to find out by what criteria kpop fans judge music quality, because in my own mind I literally sort songs into 2 groups - those that I love, and those that I don't. I don't know much about music producing/composing, so please share your own views on how you judge a song's quality! You can also think of what the song tries to accomplish musically, regardless of your preferences, and try to judge how successful it is at that, like from someone else's eyes/ears. But I think only your opinion really matters though, and it's dumb to get caught up in asserting back and forth what songs are "good" or "bad" because people have different tastes and sensibilities and they experience music differently.
