(Analysis) Why Twice is similar to Wonder Girls during their "Nation's girl group" days

Some people (mainly non fans of Twice and SNSD) mistakenly believe Twice is similar to early SNSD because of their identical number of members (which is a coincidence more than anything) and their similarly big fandom. In fact, if you look closely, Twice is actually extremely similar to Wonder Girls more than any other group. It's not very obvious to international fans as they're not well versed on the early days of Wonder Girls but once you dig into this, the similarities are so glaring it's scary... Which is not really surprising since JYP himself said Twice is a mix between Wonder Girls and Miss A (although the Miss A part is quite tiny LOL).

 

Lyrics

 

While WG and Twice's music in itself isn't that much similar, the lyrics are strongly correlated. In their hit "So Hot", WG sings lyrics such as "Everybody's watching me / 'Cause I'm so hot, hot / Everybody's wanting me / 'Cause I'm so hot, hot / Anytime, anywhere I go / I can never run away from the white spotlight / They'll never leave me alone / No matter what time it is, day or night " which is strangely similar to Twice's lines in Like Ooh Ahh, Cheer Up and TT: "People can't leave alone / I’m so pretty / Everyone struggles because of me / Wherever I walk, the ground is red / Like a red carpet / Everyone stares at me" (Like Ooh Ahh's opening lines) "He says that I’m so pretty / I’m not showing off or anything" (Cheer Up) "Whatever you wear, it’s beautiful / In the mirror, we’re throwing a / Fashion show show"

 

Nevertheless, WG and Twice's stories behind their songs are not really similar but those stories share the same spirit: spunky, daring, cute but not too much. In "Tell Me", WG sings about longing for a guy's confession while Twice in "TT" wishes their crush would like them back. The confidence of WG's "So Hot" is spread throughout Twice's discography while WG's carefulness about boys in "Irony" can be found in LOA, CU and TT's lyrics.

 

Concepts

 

From their debut song "Irony" to their latest hit "Why So Lonely", WG has always been known for their individuality. In most of their songs, each member has her own clothing style and concept. This spirit of individuality can be found in Twice too. You can also notice that WG and Twice both have members who share the same concept. Sohee and Sana share the "clumsy" concept as well as the "cute catchphrase" with Sohee's Omona and Sana's Shy Shy Shy. There's also a dance break in "Tell Me" that can be found in Twice's first two title tracks "Like Ooh Aah" and "Cheer Up". More than anything, WG and Twice both have this "girl next door" vibe with easy dance movements that everyone and their mothers will imitate and pop addictive songs with cute lyrics that you'll sing along for the next 6 months. 

 

 

Success's pattern

 

One of the most troubling thing about WG and Twice is that they share the same early "path" of success. Both debuted with well-received singles "Irony" and "Like Ooh Ahh" followed by a national hit "Tell Me" and "Cheer Up". After that, they both had another hit with "So Hot" for WG and "TT" for Twice. WG released after "So Hot" another big hit "Nobody" before leaving for America. Seeing this huge similarity, next year seems to be the year this pattern will end as JYPE intents for Twice to focus on Korea.

 

Twice enjoys a high number of Youtube views which is reminiscent of WG back in their "Nobody" days. WG is indeed the group with the highest views for a performance and actually was the first group to see their Youtube views blow up. 

 

Differences

 

The main difference between WG and Twice is obviously their sound. WG has a very retro sound (even today) while Twice has their tailor-made "color pop dance" sound. WG was produced by JYP while Twice's songs are made by Black Eyed Pilseung. 

 

The other difference is the members themselves. Apart from Sohee/Sana similarities, the other 8 members of Twice are in no way similar to Sunye, Hyuna, Yeeun, Sunmi, Yubin or Hyelim. 

 

The last difference I have found would be the group's formation. WG had a lot of member changes throughout their 9 years of career while Twice didn't have any change and won't probably have any until their contract is up. 

 

Edit: Obviously Twice is NOT Wonder Girls. They'll have their own path and their own destiny that even onces and thrices can't predict.
