What is the difference between idol and artist?

I guess to be considered an artist you have to have some control over your work, I mean art is about expressing yourself so what's the point if you have no say in it? I know performance is an art form too but there are so many idols who are not passionate about music or performing so it's not surprising that people separate the two. I don't think they're mutually exclusive tho

Artist usually put themselves together(if they are a group)/have the talent before their record deal.

Idols are mostly attractive people grabbed off the streets and trained to have talent, may idols who can sing will just tell you the company got lucky they could sing.
