I need help with my new puppy

I got a new puppy this past Saturday from a family friend.

He's a 3 month old Pomeranian Mix.

When we first got him he didn't bark at all, but after a day, he started barking. Every time he sees my dad or mom come downstairs to the kitchen, he would bark like crazy. Every time he sees anyone come home through the front door, he starts to bark. Every time someone gets up and walks, he barks. He will even wake up from his nap to bark at whoever is entering the area. But sometimes, it looks like he tries to protect whoever is playing with him at that moment. This is only sometimes though. (Ex: If I'm playing with him in the kitchen and he sees my mom come in, he'll start barking, but will stand very close to me why doing so.)

I don't know what to do anymore. I've tried ignoring him and telling him "no" whenever he barks, but it doesn't work!

I understand dogs bark and all, but his barking is too much. I can handle it, but it's annoying, loud and extremely unnecessary because we all live here. No one should be a stranger to him unless they actually are strangers.

Anyone know what I should do?  :horror:

He could be easily scared and is barking out of alarm.

He could be easily excitable (puppy... pomeranian) and is barking out of pure puppiness.

He could be very protective and is barking as a warning (but I would expect growling as well, if that were the case).

Keep him with you so you can redirect his attention (it will also help with housebreaking him, because you'll learn his signals for 'need to pee' faster).

Does he like treats? Keep them handy. If he starts barking at someone, get his attention with the treats and ONLY give him one when he quiets down. Don't reward him for half-assing it. He needs to be quiet and STAY quiet for at least a few seconds before he gets that treat.

Make sure he only gets small amounts of treats and try to avoid really rich treats, otherwise you'll end up with a fluffy puppy with diarrhea and that's no fun for anybody in that house. You can use his kibble if he likes it a lot.

That said... it's a small dog and a puppy. He's going to be irritating. If you can't handle a puppy behaving like a puppy, if you don't have the patience to train him properly, then maybe a puppy is just not for you or your family right now.

My dog used to do that, this is what you do:

When he barks EVERYTIME pick him up under his arms and raise him into the air saying stop a few times then let him down

I do this to the chiauhauha and it's working bc when I say stop he does

it is normal, i have a maltese, she does the same thing when i first took her home. She just need to get use to people and their senses. she sleep with me but if someone go to the kitchen or where else, she will bark until she see the person. sometimes she still bark when she sees the person but soon will stop. it takes a few months for her to get use to all these. I learnt not to her back and tried to stop her from barking, I let her run out and see what's going on and get used to  people and things. don't cage or keep in a room closed door, can only create more anxiety to your puppy. Puppies are fun to have but lots of works.  have fun.

hmm...idk about pom's, maybe their just more noisy than other breeds?

i'm no dog expert but..

training is your best bet. positive reinforcement aka treats.

show him that it's wrong, find the best method for you. like going shh, or calling it's name

or simply saying no or quiet. train it with a word, for our dongs we usually say their name then shhh.

and they know they need stop barking, especially when it's unnecessary.

but, every dog will bark at things like loud noises outside, or a new person they don't know etc.

it's up to you how they will continue barking for =)

hope it helps~ and congrats on the new puppy ^-^
