What kind of laptop should I get for uni/college?

Hey guys!

So I'm going to university next year and I need to get a laptop for school.

At home I don't have a computer, I have an old laptop computer that is big and needs to be plugged into the wall because I used it too much in elementary school and I guess it overheated and the battery died? Idk but the battery is completely dead, it's supposed to charge when I plug the laptop in but it doesn't charge and in the corner of my screen it says there's no battery LOL. The mouse is half broken too and I don't have Word (!!) because when I tried to install it it says that my Windows Vista is too old and Word doesn't support it lol. Even my browser Google Chrome won't update anymore because it no longer supports Windows Vista.

I don't know much about technology and the latest gadgets, so I just think it's Apple Macbook VS Windows/PC(?)/whatever kind that is not Apple lol (IDK). Apparently non-Apple laptops are supposed to work better?? I have an iPhone4S (that my aunt got me) so I think it would be more convenient for me to have an Apple Macbook but idk what kind of phone I'll have in the next few years because I'm still a high school student and my parents would never buy me an iPhone 6  but I don't want an Android so that's why I haven't begged for a new phone haha.

I'm not too picky, I just need something I can carry around, has good battery life, just something useful for university? Idk, what will I need?

What kind of laptop do you have?

And also, is Word available on a Mac?

Thank you so much if you read all the way to the end haha!   :chu: MERRY CHRISTMAS!

edit: If you do recommend Windows, what specific kind is good? I know there's a lot of types of Windows laptops.

Depends on your major.

If you are anything related to CS major: don't get a macbook

If you only need it for taking notes and browsing the internet: get the macbook air

It's extremely light and good for taking notes

Cons: It overheats faster than the macbook pro

i'd recommend asus or toshiba

you can get microsoft office for mac but you'll have to buy the software seperately. but i know some schools offer the software to their students for free.

iphones work perfectly fine with pc. you don't even really need the usb cord anymore, you can now sync over wifi.

I have a Macbook Pro and I love it, but the newer 2016 models don't have much value for the money Apple's charging.

You could probably get a Windows that does the same thing as a Macbook for half the price, if money's an issue.

If really want to go the Macbook route, the Air has good battery life, and is easy to carry around.

why would you not get a macbook if you're a CS major .-. I'm going to be majoring in CS and everyone's told me that I should get a macbook!

but to op: I'd get a macbook air before apple kills it tbh, even if the specs are old and it's overpriced mac OS is the most stable thing I've used in a while; I used to use windows and switched over to mac 3 years ago and ... let's just say I could devote my time using the computer to "more important" affairs

something small you can take to class which most mac books are small, yes there is word for macs

I have a Macbook Pro because I used to be an Animation/Illustration major and my Graphic Design teacher back in high school said macs are best for artists.

i'd recommend asus or toshiba

Don't get a mac. Get a Dell or a Toshiba. iPhones work fine with Windows these days.

depends on your budget tbh

i've got a hp pavillion and honestly it's proficient enough for me and i paid less than £500

macbooks are so expensive but if you've got the money then why not tbh

Thank you for your recommendations everyone!  Happy Holidays

I have a Lenovo Yoga and it's the best decision i've ever made. It converts into a lot of things so movie nights at college are much better. PLus it's really light and pretty. Theres a lot of technical advantages too (but i'm bad at that stuff)

I really really recommend it. With Best Buy's college deals, you can get almost 200$ off of it.

since we're on the topic, how do you take notes on a macbook pro, I recently got a new one this year but I've never been able to use it in class because I once tried taking notes on Word and I never even went back to look at them - they were a mess but I've seen other students use their laptops to take notes like in a notebook - and honestly I type way faster than I write by hand so I'm interested in how they get their notes to look like that or what program they buy or use, does anyone know?

If you want to take notes handwriting style, you should check out microsoft surface pro or lenovo yoga. Even if you didn't care, those are still top choices for college students for various majors overall.

In my college,a lot of students own macbooks because of the great battery life and its overall usefulness in internet browsing, typing, research, and everything else you would do to study.

Microsoft Office should be also available for Macbooks.

Nonetheless, if you decide on a windows laptop, at least make sure that it has at least 8 GB of ram, i5 processor. Unless you plan on doing design or modelling for engineering, you probably won't need a dedicated graphics card like nvidia or amd.

Honesty, Macbooks seems like the better option to me... had my old one for almost 7 years and still works like new... I upgraded last year to the newer pro..

Dell, or Macx

OneNote or Evernote, as long as you get used to organizing your notes digitally.
