(t/n: A more serious topic but I thought it would be interesting to share!)

Summary: Basically, Naver is under fire for having a rule, established in 2012, that they can remove search words if administrative and judicial institutions ask them to do so.  This includes presidential offices, National Intelligence Service, prosecutors, police, the court, and the ministries.  Daum also has a similar rule.

They've also removed certain search words when companies or universities requested for them to do so. They're now under scrutiny because it infringes people's right to know and allows the government more power to control the Internet.

From March to May of 2016, a total of 119,317 search words were removed.

Yonhap News via Daum: Naver and Daum under scrutiny over rule to remove search words if the government requests

1. [+4183, -7]  I already knew from the start.
They're minions of those in power.

2. [+3537, -8]  Unbelievable... Old man Park Junghee and Park Soonshil's power

3. [+836, -1]  Trash portals... portals of the government!
We should just call them trash news sites from Joseon!

4. [+794, -3]  It's already been 9 years since I haven't used Naver... Daum and Google is enough for me...

5. [+764, -1]  I really can't criticize China.  Our country is just as controlled.

6. [+672, -4]  It's already been years since I've boycotted Naver

7. [+608, -1]  We knew

Today Humor: Naver's rule under fire

- Crazy... is this what the country's like

- I don't do anything else except look at the sports section on Naver
> For me it's TV Cast only...

- Everyone was expecting that already but now that it's proven, it's kind of sad.

- Why's everyone shocked ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹
Was there anyone who didn't know this?  This is what any search portal is reduced to
This is nothing for the government

- They would've failed if not for the Webtoons

- I wonder just how much they've controlled
That's the scariest

^ might just be true.

The reveal probably lend more weight to what knetz had suspect all these years about government releasing idol dating or other various 'scandals' to put the spotlight away from them during any government scandals.

I didn't realise that their people didn't know this until recently. S korea's news transparency has always been low not just in these years

I don't think it's that they didn't know, I think people were aware of it but it's only now been investigated and finally they have solid proof of it?

Seriously? How the fuck is that even allowed?! All those rumours of government using idols and others as distractions to cover their own shit is basically true.

I always thought it was possible but more like in indirect way - eg government tell writers/networks to make or focus on certain stories which would inevitably push it bury their dirty laundry to the side. This instead means they can directly affect the news, no middle man or sneaky behind the scenes stuff required.

Korea is literally ruled by by fake news

honestly i'm sure this shocks no one

can't trust google either, although i guess this isn't as much a problem for korean news

Google is so shady.  :._.:

It's good to be aware of the policies of the websites you use, but idk why anybody is surprised. Naver is a business, first and foremost. They'll do whatever makes a couple â‚© in the end.

Damn

And people were coming at me when I was exposing the truth about how Tiffany was a shield for the president's scandal and no one listened to me.

I feel fat with pride.

-Eats turkey leg-

A few people also mentioned it (points to self) of how suspicious it was the president made a history mistake during a speech practally a day after Tiffany yet got no repercussions compared to Tiffany who kept getting more and more coverage (along with a ton of lies put in there), especially when you consider Seolhyun, an idol and not a politician, got attacked for a similar thing. But ofc most passed it off it defensive fans just making excuses.

Now with revelations that the president is a fraud and web news can be manipulated by government its scary to think Tiffany was very likely a scapegoat and how much she went through and still has to. Who knows how many other idols, actors and other famous people have been used by the government.
