Billboard Japan released information about the most listened artist on Spotify in 2016. One OK Rock are the most played artist in Japan. Find more details below. 


 


Spotify, the music streaming service with over 100.000 users worldwide announced the most listened artists in 2016 featuring Drake as most listened on Spotify. For second consecutive year Drake is ranked in first place with over 4.7 billion plays. 


 


In addition, on September 29, 2016 Spotify officialy landend in Japan which became open to public audience on November 10 of this year. One OK Rock became the most played Japanese artist in Japan while RADWIMPS was the most played Japanese artist abroad. 


 


The rankings from Spotify Japan are from the beginnings of the company in Japan, from September 30, 2016 to November 20, less than 2 months of information.

Spotify launched in Japan in September of this year and streaming is still in its infancy in Japan. This isn't really a valid measure of anything.

 

 

Agreed, but I think that it beautifully illustrates why AKB48 is not dominating this list. There are no incentives, there's no reason for them to dominate. It's also possible that Spotify don't have rights to stream AKB48.

 

The absence of Perfume/KPP but the presence of Nakata Yasutaka is interesting, as well. The rights issue could be a problem for Perfume/KPP as well.

 

I don't see streaming catching on in a big way, in Japan, anytime soon.

Well, it does make sense. They thrive on Physical. I don't see them going digital or streaming any time soon.

They did do well digitally back at their peak, when they were actually relevant with the public.

 

Interesting, so what's keeping them dominating on the physical charts are the hardcore fans.
