How popular was SNSD before 'Gee'?

My love story with snsd started somewhere in 2014 and for the longest time I couldn't stand them for some reason. When I started getting more seriously into kpop they were already on top with Gee, Oh, Genie and other epic songs so I never really followed them during their rookie days.

SM was already a big company back then so they've gained a lot of buzz for that. They won on a show with their debut song. And I know about 2008 Black Ocean incident. All of these gave me an impression that they were quite popular or at least known in public eye, but Gee era really skyrocketed them.

Were they on Red Velvet level of popularity?

I've also never followed them early, I always join groups at their peak lmao :imstupid:

But from what I know, they were already pretty big because I think SM had one other popular group before SNSD?? Was it Sech kies or Shinhwa? Then there's also Super Junior, Boa and Shinee

I think SNSD received a lot of hype for being the first girl group from SNSD, so they were pretty popular even as rookies

not as well known musically as wonder girls in Korea, but individually, Taeyeon and Yoona was not any bit less well known than any of the wonder girls (Sohee with her "omona" included) thanks to "If" and "You are my destiny", Hell, Yoona was even more well-known, Jang Sae-byuk was everywhere at the time (for anyone too young to know, that's Yoona's character). and the other girls appeared on TV like crazy. And SNSD as a whole only pale in comparison to wonder girls, but that's only digitally, their physical is much much more stronger than wonder girls (120k with 1 album for snsd and less than 80k with 2 for wonder girls)

There is a pretty simple answer: they really weren't. (in terms of how Kpop girl groups are these days)

[i might be wrong, but take this with a grain of salt please lol]

Prior to Wonder Girls, Girl Groups weren't really a thing. Yeah there were a few scattered, but most groups were pretty much shamed into disbanding, so you got a huge reign of boybands (which is why we see the ratio we see today). Female solo vocalists were popular, but groups with the idol-ish concept weren't. Wonder Girls was HUGE after their hits, which opened the floodgates for the girl groups we see today.

I wouldn't compare them to Red Velvet, since K-pop is a lot more open these days. It is hard to really compare them to any current girl group unless you look into a different genre.

[i wasn't really into SM back then, so this is all pretty biased, and mostly from my perspective]

But they are definitely not comparable to Red Velvet.

/edit: I put it back lol

They were actually pretty big, just a few steps behind WG. They were one of the three towers of WonSoKa.

Exactly, it is just that the market for girl groups weren't as big back then, so you don't get the whole tug of war boybands had that shot some of them to the top.

[ actually nvm there was way too much bias in that ]

Ahh Why did you edit your comment? I actually liked it. As long as it isn't insulting anyone I don't mind about biased opinion, regardless if I agree or not :)

SNSD was not SM first GG, they had SES way before and in between GGs that didn't really succeed (MILK, The grace..)

Yes it was. Internationally and in Korea. Wasn't a stan of either groups back in 08 but WG >>>>>>> SNSD before Gee.

It wasn't. After S.E.S and FlinKL, SNSD selftitled album was the first to hit 100K for a girlgroup. They were everywhere, shows, cf and some of them started with minor roles in dramas or films like Yoona, Yuri or Sooyoung. They had a solid fanbase and public recognition, but of course Wonder Girls was huge in that deparment thanks to Tell Me and Nobady

I'm glad you just agreed with me. And to me, WG >>>>>>>>>>>>>> SNSD. Their songs were played EVERYWHERE. They had THREE BACK TO BACK hits. Even their WonderBang collab is still talked about the most in some PANN posts. Yall forget that SNSD were much more hated both internationally and domestically until they started being too successful with Gee and Genie.
