milup 1,920
So I got in an argumet with a friend this morning at first he was just saying he didnt like kpop and I was okay with that until he made a racist remark towards asains. At first he said "I like Americans better than Asians" which I felt was dumb because he seemed to act as if Americans were a race and that there wrrent even Asian Americans... So I said "well Girls Generation has two members who are born and raised American and speak flient english." Then he says "yes but they cant see the road" and I got angry of course and he just kept going. I told him that he should be racist or ignorant but he just kept saying the same things. He insisted that he is intitled to his own opinion which of course I agree with but I still told him not to be so racist or ignorant using stereotypes he doesnt even know of they are true or not. He is an 18 high school senior and we live in the southeast US the hive of racism. What can I say to help him

denizen mars 5,911
sounds like an ass just from that, why would you want to be friends with someone so close-minded
RubberDuckyTai 2,731
Where in GA are you at? Metro ATL was full of Koreans and Vietnamese (at least where I grew up). LOVED them and still friends with most of them. Anyways, it's his loss. Not sure you could call him a friend. And it seems like he wasn't open to listen to what you had to say, so I'm not sure that you can change his mind (as it seems he's rather close minded). Nekci 1,995
Nothing. If people are prejudiced, they're probably going to stay that way.
wiz109 1,532
punch him in the eye and ask if he can see the road then no seriously though, idiots like this will only get a wake up call if they want it, no way are you going to make see his prejudice unless he wants to. AdzPower 3,385
There isn;t much you can do really, though you could open his mind more, expose him to more cultures, go to different restaurants where they serve Asian dishes for example, or China town or something. ryokonicheiress 5,833
He doesn't seem open to what you're saying or very open-minded in general. Honestly, I'd say if anything just start playing kpop jams you like whenever you're around him. If he gets annoyed by it and doesn't want to be your friend, his loss, since he seems like the kind of person you need not count as a friend. He may actually enjoy it, or subconsciously find it appealing as I know many who look down on kpop end up humming to songs or know the songs if not the actual group or language just from hearing songs over and over again. Otherwise, let him go. There are plenty of other awesome people in the world you still have time to meet and become friends with. Don't burden yourself with someone who is filled with that type of hate.
s4a 13,715
There was a study not too long ago that stated that the less intelligent a person is, the more likely they are to overestimate their intelligence. Meaning ignorance and stubbornness are traits that generally go hand and hand. There are just some people who can't be saved. Best to recognize who they are and associate yourself with the right people. No sense to waste your time with someone who isn't worth it.
Tsubomi 247
I find it hard to have a proper discussion with most people below the age of 20 because their world-view is rather limited yet they are ridiculously overprotective of their sense of self-entitlement. Your friend is still a high school student so he needs time to grow up. But at the same time I understand what it's like to have a friend who holds a prejudiced/racist view and sometimes you want to punch them in their faces without hurting them. Sitara 45
Don't bother with that idiot. I had a friend like him too. I told him about Korean entertainment industry (kpop&k dramas) then he makes ignorant comments like "ew ...Korean people look pale and dead AF" Ignorant people will stay ignorant until some sort of light comes there way. Don't bother with those idiots.
Bromide 4,729
doesn't he know that there's a difference between being racist and being entitled to your own opinion... It doesnt mean you can be out right discriminating towards others

Actually, I went to Kennesaw a lot. LOL...Anyways, I'm from Cobb co., didn't run into much racism (school was extremely diverse), but I wouldn't count anyone as my friend if they ever showed any sign of it. Maybe you should just distance yourself from him. Good luck with it though.

Campbell High School (only known for being bad at sports and because it's the high school that Julia Roberts went to and getting into gun fights with Osborne High School)...But we even had an International festival during spirit week. I also lived in Paulding for about 6 years (past the cow pastures, etc...etc...etc...), but out of those 6, I travelled to college in Atlanta every day for 4 years so I didn't do much there except go home and sleep. My orchestra teacher during my sophomore year was also the orchestra teacher at Harrison, so we joined forces once to do state evaluations. Had fun practicing there after school.
