Hardest class you've taken in college

This is an embarrassing confession.

I'm a computer science major on my 3rd year towards my bachelors (junior). I found out in the beginning of the semester that my school stopped taking credit for AP stats so I had to retake the course at the university.

I was kinda mad at first because like yo! I've taken this class before!! It's just a waste money. But then I was like "mayn AP stats was easy shit. I got a 5 on the test. Imma ace this blowtorch!"

Long story short, I have a D in the class and and my 3.92 gpa bout to go down down down. I have a test tomorrow in the class (last class before Thanksgiving break) but I'm neglecting my responsibilities for now.

Sigh.

Tell me stories about the hardest classes you've taken so I can further run from my responsibilities.

The ***** Organic class! >.<
Wasn't supposed to take it as a freshman but I did take it in the second semester and when I saw that my grades might lower my GPA I dropped it, retook it in the summer and no difference was made -_-
Never been able to understand that course, it was all about complicated structures and w.e

so far I haven't taken many hard classes, but next quarter I'm taking organic chemistry

Bless your poor soul. I had to cut my schedule down to 3 classes that semester. I was taking orgo+lab and my programming class so I had a lot of time to focus on orgo but it was still kinda ugh. My best friend dropped the class and changed her major cuz of orgo.

If you ever need any help though, I gotchu fam.

Calculus.

I'm HORRIBLE at math and have a lot of trouble wrapping my head around anything beyond the basics, so this class was so hard for me. The class had a student aid that would have two sessions a week to help people in the class with the homework and going over chapters for upcoming tests, and you better believe I went to every session that whole semester. Most of the time it was just me and the student aid in the room, so I guess I was the only person having trouble with the class  :._.: But she did help a lot so I was able to not fail my homework and tests. Don't know how I managed to get a B in that class. Teacher must have graded on a curve.

Philosophy.  It was interesting but the professor literally talked like a robot and was so hard to follow.

See that's what I think is wrong with my class too. My professor just goes on and on and he was this monotonous voice and once he gave us a lecture on the importance of time management. He took up the whole class period.

One thing I've learned from college is that the professor can change the difficulty/interest of a class just by teaching style.  ratemyprofessor.com is a true blessing to avoid the bad ones if possible.

Phonetics.

It was hard! Its like learning a new languages because you had to memorize the IPA; International Phonetic Alphabet.

What major are you? That actually seems interesting.

I feel. But no offense bb, freshman you was in over her head. I had seniors in my class drop out (I took it the summer after sophomore year)

Neuroanatomy.

All those neural pathways are driving me crazy.

God the name alone makes my head hurt

I admire your perseverance. Serious props to you man! I haven't gone to a single stats tutorial even after I managed a 47 on the last test.

Oh lord, math is my Achilles heel. I took the easiest math class that my college had to offer and I got a C+.Good enough for me, then they went on to tell me that I need to take pre-calc and calc because they want everyone to be at the same level. My college is known as a business school. Most of the students there major in business, finance, accounting, management etc...  I was like oh hell no! I satisfied the general requirements for a Bachelor's Degree by taking 1 credited math class and thats it! I'm not gonna put myself through the stress of math every again.

I know, everyone in my major took it in their last summer course or their last course but I was so stubborn and thought I can do it. My counselor thought the same too, he saw my first course grades and was like " You definitely can do it", I actually got into uni spared from 9 hours so I was like why not I can add it.

But even if I took it in my 4th year I would still got the same grades, it's just not for me :/

I've mostly taken programming classes but I accidentally took this intro to web design class in freshman year and it was so much fun!! With programming, it's usually more abstract stuff and you can only see your final product after you've finished your whole code but with web design you see your creation form and it was amazing. We didn't have a book for the class because the department head was our professor and he had his own powerpoints. I can see if I can still access them if you really want em.

For my python course we read 'How to think like a computer scientist' (which is like the python bible) and for my C++ class, our professor told us to read The Pragmatic Programmer as a supplement. I really recommend that book. The book I read for that class was 'C++ Primer' which was simple enough to follow but didn't go too much in depth. (I used an old edition though so that might be why)

edit: Sorry C++ primer is what I'm using now and it's actually a good book. I was thinking about 'A Tour of C++"

Communication. I had to take classes that were more designed towards speech pathology such as phonetics, language development, voice & diction. Phonetics combined with voice and diction helped me in a way that I can actually "turn off" for a lack of a better word my Polish accent. My voice and diction professor was extremely extremely harsh! She would criticize the way you pronounce certain words, pick on your accent and deduct points for everything. Getting a good grade with her was almost impossible.

Memorizing the IPA, this is just some of it. The most often used symbols.

Phonemic-Chart.jpg

was a pain in the ass. The final for that class was 2 part. It was a 100 multiple choice questions, and the 2nd part was transcribing English into IPA. We had to listen to the professor read sentences and we had to write them using IPA.

Thank you!

I took this class and my professor made us buy these damn books that weren't necessary. Got me upset ;(

Astronomy and a class that every liberal arts major needed to take their freshman year, it was a book to film class, sounds easy right? NOPE. My teacher made the class much harder than it needed to be. Essays due every two weeks, quizzes every week, had to read fucking 80+ pages before class, dude was ridiculous

I really didn't want to fail so I had 3 options, fail, try and drop the course, or go to the session to get help lol

I'm glad you were able to get out of taking higher level maths. My experience in Calculus made me change my major out of Computer Science because there was no way I could handle the math classes coming that are harder than that.

Did you see my edit about the books? C++ Primer is the good one, A TOur f C++ was the not really good one. I just dont want you to be confused!

Yesss I hate that! Honestly for programming classes, you can torrent your books online or sometimes you dont need them at all. A very valuable lesson I learned after I spent almost 200 on a chem textbook and I never opened it. Why do teachers list books in their syllabi when they're not required. RateMyTeacher saved me a good 1000 bucks these past years.

Yea that was pretty smart of you. You could always try for a minor in comp sci (I'll be real, I don't recall using much of anything past cal 1 in my programming classes). What major are you now?
