What do you think determines longevity/impact in music?

when I think about artists I know I'll be listening to even when I'm older, I think that they need to be either one of these things:

1) an amazing singer (like amazing vocal skills) w/ great pop hits (eg. Whitney Houston)

2) skilled singer/rapper and amazing lyricist+composer (eg. J. Cole, Kendrick, Frank Ocean, Miguel)

3) great vocal + hits + songwriting abilities + great performer (eg. Michael Jackson, Beyonce)

My examples are all subjective (i.e my faves) but I think we could all agree that they're great examples of artists who's music people will be listening to for years to come

All of those plus you have to have a captivating personality. You have to have the it factor that so many people lack. That's why it's called star quality.

Agree! I forgot about that too and I think that "star quality" will show through your music and your performances tbh

vocal techniques doesn't matter, no one understands about that anyways (talking about general public) but if you have better technique u have more diversity and variations. Stylistic singing (whether technical or not) matters tho.

having a hit song really matter lol.

having a dedicated fandom matters too

longevity and impact in music is due to a new experimental or signficant breakthrough in music that an artist provides

you've already mentioned quite a few of the possible causes to how this can happen, but i think these occurrences happen only when music gets to a stale point where things get repetitive in the industry

look at how whitney changed the game completely in 1985....the industry wasn't really based off of vocal talent and skill then and it was really rare for a black artist, especially a female black one, to be a big pop icon.....that's one example of it

another example is with how mariah carey popularized the hip hop and pop collaboration in 1995 with ODB featuring on Fantasy, that was pretty much unheard of in pop, especially with names as big as hers back then....she paved the way for a lot of hip hop/rap and pop collabs today
