SEOUL, May 28 (Yonhap) -- Summer is typically the peak season for the Korean film industry, the time when roughly one quarter of all moviegoers hit theaters. Major distributors have already competed fiercely to set the best timing for their new release.

 

Last year, "A Taxi Driver" about the 1980 Gwangju pro-democracy uprising was the most-viewed movie of the summer, drawing more than 10 million views. At the same time, "The Battleship Island," one of the most anticipated films of the year, was a box-office flop while "Midnight Runners" was a surprise sensation with more than 5 million views.

Inrang (Tentative title)

 

Warner Bros. Korea recently decided to release "Inrang," (English title pending) the new feature from director Kim Jee-woon of "The Age of Shadows" (2016) and "A Bittersweet Life" (2004), in late July.

 

The sci-fi thriller is a Korean live-action adaptation from the Japanese animated film masterpiece "The Wolf Brigade" by Hiroyuki Okiura.

 

Set in the distant future where South and North Korea agree to launch a unified government, the movie features confrontation between an anti-reunification terrorist group called "Sect" and a special police unit formed to stop them.

 

Gang Dong-won plays Im Joong-kyung, an officer assigned to quell the terrorists and Han Hyo-joo plays Lee Yoon-hee, elder sister of "the girl in red cape" who detonates a suicide bomb right in front of Im's eyes. Jung Woo-sung appears as Jang Jin-tae, chief of the training camp for the police unit.

MBC’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday drama “Bad Papa†has shared first stills of Shin Eun Soo as Jang Hyuk’s daughter.

 

“Bad Papa†will follow the story of a man who becomes a bad person to be a good father. He will be a man who sometimes has to give up and sometimes has to be courageous in order to protect his family, and the fast-paced story is set to enthrall viewers. Shin Eun Soo will take on the role of Yoo Young Sun, who acts brusque on the outside but is actually very thoughtful and cares deeply about her family, especially her father Yoo Ji Chul. She is a high school student who has learned of life’s hardships too early, and she pushes people away to hide her pain.

 

The new stills show Yoo Young Sun going to school with a cast on one of her arms. She has an aura that makes her stand out in front of her friends, and someone’s words seem to annoy her as she stops in her tracks and glares at them. Though the rest of her face is expressionless, her eyes are full of fire and charisma, making viewers curious to know the story behind her life and the reason why she’s wearing a cast.

 

 

Shin Eun Soo is said to have been a lively presence on set, filling the space with laughter as soon as cameras stop rolling. The hot weather didn’t seem to hold her down as she gave everyone an energetic smile. She said, “I completed my first filming well, despite the hot weather. I got to work with actors my age, and we got along right from the beginning so we had fun filming our scenes. The fact that we were filming at a school made me feel more comfortable. She added, “I’m working hard on all of my scenes. Please give ‘Bad Papa’ your love when it begins airing.â€

 

“Bad Papa†is set to make its premiere on October 1 at 10 p.m. KST.

“Bad Papa†is a new Monday-Tuesday drama that will star Jang Hyuk as Yoo Ji Chul, a man who becomes a bad person in order to be a good father to his children. A former boxing champion and national hero, Yoo Ji Chul ends up losing his family, fame, and fortune in a single morning after suffering a disgraceful defeat.

 

Meanwhile, after being forced to give up her dream of becoming a ballerina, his daughter Yoo Young Sun (played by Shin Eun Soo) ends up becoming wary and distrustful of the world around her.

 

The newly released posters heartbreakingly depict the two characters chasing their dreams underwater—a floundering Yoo Ji Chul throws a fierce punch but is seemingly unable to reach the cash floating around him, while the determined Yoo Young Sun strikes a graceful ballet pose even as she sinks to the bottom.

 

 

According to the production staff, the posters were shot on August 6 in a pool of water 7 meters (approximately 23 feet) deep. In order to prevent them from rising to the top, the actors wore ankle weights and relied on oxygen tanks throughout the four-hour shoot.

 

Both Jang Hyuk and Shin Eun Soo impressed the staff with their composure and fearlessness, showing remarkable passion as they struck the difficult poses necessary to express boxing and ballet respectively.

 

The producers remarked, “‘Bad Papa’ has a densely-packed mix of action, fantasy, and the joys and sorrows experienced by the head of a household living in 2018.â€

 

They added, “The drama will tell the stories of not only the head of the household, but also of his wife and the dreams of his children. We hope that you show a lot of interest in this story about our dreams, which will switch back and forth between reality, fantasy, and action.â€

“Bad Papa†is about a man who chooses to become a bad person in order to become a good father. The fantasy thriller will include family love, intense action, and a questionable new drug.

 

The drama will tell the story of a former boxing champion named Yoo Ji Chul (played by Jang Hyuk) who gets everything taken away from him after a disgraceful loss, Choi Sun Joo (played by Son Yeo Eun) who works hard to overcome the hardships of life, and Yoo Young Sun (played by Shin Eun Soo) who threw away her dream of becoming a ballerina.

 

On September 19, “Bad Papa†revealed two posters that give viewers a peek at the drama’s emotions and message. In the first poster, viewers can feel the warmth and love radiating from the family of three. They stand with their backs to the evening glow and under the words, “I just wanted to be a normal dad.†With their daughter Yoo Young Sun between them, Yoo Ji Chul and Choi Sun Joo smile while holding each other close.

 

 

In the second poster, Yoo Ji Chul runs after his daughter to give her her backpack and the two look as if they’re bickering like any other father and daughter. Choi Sun Joo smiles as she walks ahead of them.

 

These posters were shot on August 6 in the Seodaemun District in Seoul. Despite the hot weather, the three actors cheered each other on and made each other laugh on set. Jang Hyuk warmly greeted the staff, Son Yeo Eun took good care of her co-stars, and Shin Eun Soo livened up the set with her smile.

 

A staff member said, “They’re all ‘icons of generosity’ who take care of others more than themselves, so the atmosphere while filming is warm. Please look forward to ‘Bad Papa,’ which will move you with laughter, sad tears, and overwhelming joy.â€
