quality on a budget: is big hit the best company when it comes to using their budget and resources wisely?

i've been thinking about this a lot lately, especially today after bts released this masterpiece.

the thing that has me shaken the most about this is how hq this video is and it's only a trailer for their tour. anyone who doesn't know about the kpop industry or about big hit would probably think they were a big three/top top company just from seeing the blood sweat and tears mv, bts' wings short films, and then this trailer. non-kpop fans would never guess where big hit started, would never guess that they only started turning in major profit last year because of the sheer quality of everything bts does. and they see major results because of this marketing and image making of bts as a high quality group.

of course it should be taken into consideration that as one of big hit's two currently promoting acts, and the one making the profit, bts has basically everything they make recycled back into them so there isn't really a major uneven distribution of yearly budget like some companies probably have. but it just makes me wonder why some bigger companies don't put as much effort into overall quality.

it also makes me wonder why some companies don't try to save more by using in-house producers or group members themselves as lyricists, producers, ect. a lot of companies spend so much on foreign producers just to get mediocre songs that koreans don't even like.

i feel like this is an interesting topic. would like to hear other opinions.

Do we have any sort of estimate of what bighits profits are? It's hard to judge whether their spending on resources is good when we don't know how much they make :._.:

i can't find it right now, but i've seen a chart posted that shows their yearly profits after taxes from 2013-2015 iirc. if someone knows what i'm talking about, pls share.

I don't know about their budget, but I know bighit was really inspired when they decided to take Lumpens and his crew as their mv director. His works are just pure art.

Also it was really nice to see how the quality of mv increased over time. From No more dream to BS&T, such a huge difference.

As you've also mentioned in your post, regarding the number of acts that they have to manage, the focus of the company is concentrated solely on the highest profitable avenue. Furthermore, the cause of BigHit being a small company only enhances more compact environment for work. This makes the process more detailed and individual output becomes more magnified. While companies with more acts become rather systematic( this doesn't mean they don't produce excellent mv's) and the process comes from the top to the bottom. Add to that, BigHit has a good producer in Mr. Bang and a rather enthusiastic group of guys who are easy/fun to work with( bias).

Same, to be honest I had always thought of BTS as an overrated group and watched BST for fun and wanted to diss them. I had listened to their other stuff like Fire before, but it didn't click with me. And then...

...I clicked on BST and I saw the sheer quality of their MV and I was like "THIS IS GOOD HOLY SHIT :rlytearpls: :rlytearpls: ". And then I listened to it x1000 times and went on to backtrack and watch all their MVs, and realised how mistaken I was for not realizing BTS was good.

From the lightings, to the outfits and the camerawork and the choreo, it feels like they really put a lot of effort into BST. Even showing it to non-kpop fans, my friends were honestly shocked and drawn in by how good the MV was.

I'm personally glad BigHit is investing so much into BTS since they're like their only big source of income, I was very disappointed with SM and JYP recently not putting effort into their groups clothings for the current comebacks.

I'm great that their product quality is rising proportionally with BTS popularity. It means they really invested the money back on smt greater for fans and don't take BTS reputation for granted, even when with their current popularity fans will buy anything they put out anw.

The tour trailer is amazing, if that was a movie I would pay to go to cinema.

Bighit focus on investing most of the money into their artist, rather than other things currently. (e.g. property, hotels, etc.)

imo Big 3/mid-tier still invest more in their individual groups....the results are just sometimes....

Bighti is smart and strategic with their money. I mean as a small company with one main artist they have to be. They work with friends, they have in house producers and artist involvement. All the royalties is retained in the company.

BTS is their only group as of now so it makes sense they're so well managed, the focus is on them, also with foreign producers there are most likely people backing them so SM or whoever you're shading gets the profit from the producer being used.

It's easier to do with one idol group in a company. Jellyfish was good with vixx too, though they were really cheap with gugudan.

Yep. So much easier when the profits are plowed back into the group and not spread among other groups or into new ventures.

re: in house producers...thats exactly what YG is doing. Some SM members do, too, like Jonghyun. I think 2PM has done it.

"Welcome, first time with BTS?"-RM, Dope

I'm glad you were inspired to look into their older work. Since you've seen the other side, I have to ask: what is it that initially made you feel they were overrated? Was it us (Army)? :hurr:
