Religious violence committed on Hindus in Bangladesh

Why is Sheikh Hasina's 'secular' govt so woefully inept at curbing atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh

How else can one explain the fact that it has been nearly three weeks since the violence erupted and there have been no signs of any fire fighting. This is indeed appalling. Reliable sources confirm that the planning for the attacks on Hindu temples and houses was carried out in local mosques, and that Muslim extremists paraded on the streets with arms, openly exhibiting their anti-Hindu tenor.

Following the attacks in Brahmanbaria, the anti-Hindu excesses spilled over to Govindgunj of the Gaibandha district on 6 November. Here, a Santhal village came under communal attack, leading to two avoidable deaths and the wanton destruction of property, in what can only be described as organised cases of arson and murderous attacks on Hindu Santhals.

Almost simultaneously, the Khulna and Bagerhat districts also saw episodes of large scale and planned violence, conducted on the pretext of grabbing immovable Hindu property. An ordinary incident of land dispute in the region led to arson, loot and anti-Hindu sloganeering that was reminiscent of the ugly scenes of Partition days. The women were not spared either. The authorities looked clueless in spite of several credible reports claiming that 17 temples were desecrated and over 100 Hindu homes were usurped.

In lieu of the ceaseless inhuman atrocities against Hindus, it is pertinent to point out that the Hindu population in Bangladesh has shrunk drastically, from 13.5 percent to a meagre 8.5 percent. Sceptics attribute this decline in number to the fact that Hindus are being forced to flee to India, so that their prime-landed property can be appropriated.

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh

Over almost two years, radical Islamists have carried out a string of brutal attacks in Bangladesh, killing scores of bloggers, foreigners and members of religious minorities. A Hindu tailor was killed in April, and a Hindu priest was hacked to death in July. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her governing Awami League party have accused the Islamist opposition of fomenting this terrorism. In this context, the news that Awami League politicians may be implicated in recent attacks on Hindu homes and temples is profoundly disturbing.

The attacks were set off by outrage over an image on Facebook depicting the Hindu god Siva at a Muslim holy site in the city of Mecca. On Oct. 30, hundreds of angry Muslims ransacked 15 temples and the homes of more than 100 families in a Hindu neighborhood in Nasirnagar, northeast of Dhaka. The police did not intervene. Other attacks on Hindus took place across Bangladesh.

Rasraj Das, a Hindu man, was accused of posting the image and arrested. But, on Nov. 6, Bangladesh’s minister of fisheries and livestock, Sayedul Hoque, said: “Rasraj Das didn’t upload that image demeaning religion in Facebook. According to an intelligence report, it was posted from Dhaka,†though by whom is not clear.

A Bangladeshi Supreme Court lawyer and civil rights activist, Jyotirmoy Barua, has warned that social media is being used in Bangladesh to foment violence against minorities and that “users who are not very tech-savvy†are susceptible to having their accounts hijacked. Mr. Rasraj, who is illiterate, appears to be a pawn in someone else’s dangerous game.

Dozens of suspects in the attacks have been arrested, and the police officer in charge in Nasirnagar has been suspended from his duties. Bangladesh’s National Human Rights Commission has begun an investigation into the attacks, calling them a “preplanned conspiracy.†While the Awami League has suspended three local leaders for their involvement in the attack, a thorough investigation must determine who exactly was responsible for posting the offending image, and to what end.

Vihara, pagodas burned down, plundered in N. Sumatra

Hundreds of people plundered and burned down several Buddhist temples or vihara in Tanjung Balai, North Sumatra, on Friday evening. No fatalities or injuries occurred in the anarchic acts, which took place until early Saturday.

It is estimated that the attacks have caused billions of rupiah in losses.

North Sumatra Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Rina Sari Ginting said the riots began when a 41-year-old of Chinese descent, only identified as Meliana, reprimanded an administrator of the Al Maksum Mosque to lower its microphone volume.

Rina further said Meliana had previously conveyed similar warnings to the administrator, hence, the mosque’s congregation members visited her house following her complaint for the umpteenth time on Friday evening.

The meeting between Al Maksum congregation members and Meliana heated up, forcing Tanjung Balai Police officers to safeguard Meliana and her husband at the police station. Angry mobs continued to flock to Meliana’s house, however. Some had even attempted to burn down the house but it was prevented by people living in the neighbourhood.

People who had been seized by emotion later moved to the Juanda Vihara, which is located approximately 500 meters from Meliana’s house. “The mob attempted to set ablaze the vihara but the police managed to prevent them. They could only pelt the house of worship with projectiles, damaging it. This was the start of the anarchic acts,†Rina told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

The police officer said that in the riot, the angry mob damaged and burned down several vihara and Chinese temples or pagoda. They comprised one vihara and three pagodas on Jl. Pantai Amor, one vihara on Jl. Imam Bonjol and one pagoda on Jl. Ade Irma.

Onsite at the vihara and pagodas, Rina added that the mob destroyed prayer equipment, Buddha statues, tables, chairs, lamps, and several cars and motorbikes.

Seven people were taken into custody for allegedly plundering the houses of worship when the attacks occurred. Meanwhile, Rina said, Meliana and her family were still in protection at the Tanjung Balai Police station. The situation in Tanjung Balai reportedly has calmed down
