Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: Episode 17

xgbo5Q4.jpg&key=da788862b0cdc3131a0c1119

For a while, our bandits were simple men who protected their own, but as rumors begin to spread, they end up becoming greater protectors of the people. As they build a reputation, the enemy becomes clearer. We learn more about their agenda and the process that transformed the weak and vengeful into powerful enemies, and those same enemies may end up giving our Avengers a run for their money.

EPISODE 17 RECAP

“Footstool,†calls Choongwongoon, and Gil-dong turns around to find his enemy regrettably alive and well. Behind Choongwongoon, Mori steps into view, and we see in a flashback that he vowed to make Gil-dong regret keeping him alive. The bandits are shocked and disgusted at the sight of Choongwongoon, who claims that he’s a new person now. Keeping his composure, Choongwongoon calmly threatens to change Gil-dong into a new person as well. As he leaves, Gil-dong greets Mori, who gives him a sinister smile before following his new master

Ga-ryung awaits Gil-dong’s return and wanders outside her home in anticipation. Mori trails her, and just as he follows her into a neighboring home, she comes out carrying a rock, ready to fight as she demands to know why he’s following her. She recognizes him as Heotaehak’s former minion, and she warns him not to touch her orabeoni. He doesn’t take her seriously, though he finds her attitude to be quite unusual. She has more fighting words, but she drops them and the rock when she sees Gil-dong arriving with his entourage. She follows them into the house, but they ignore her and solemnly walk into the room. Eop-san explains that they have something important to discuss but doesn’t disclose any details, so no one hears her when she shares that she just saw Mori.

Ilchung reports that Choongwongoon had been released from exile about half a year ago and has been roaming from village to village assuming the role of a scholar. We see Choongwongoon educating the villagers about the duty of scholars to educate the people. He’s viewed as an upright scholar by the people, but Gil-dong knows better as he laughs and says that people don’t change easily.

That night, Gil-dong and Segul locate Choongwongoon’s home, and they’re surprised to see that the former royal now lives in very humble home. Gil-dong announces his entrance and tries to provoke Choongwongoon by giving him taffy (eating “yeot†symbolizes a big fat middle finger), but the man has changed. Choongwongoon keeps his cool and vows to see Gil-dong kneel in front of him. Gil-dong disparages his words and leaves, pulling Choongwongoon’s wrapped temper at the seams. After the meeting with Choongwongoon, the bandits are relieved to hear that the former royal doesn’t seem to know about Gil-dong’s involvement to get revenge for the people. Soboori warns everyone to watch their mouths and tells Ilchung to be more selective with the pleas they accept. But Gil-dong is more curious about Choongwongoon’s transformation. He presumes that he couldn’t have done it on his own, so someone must be behind him.

Choongwongoon asks Scholar Song to meet with Gil-dong to witness the wickedness for himself. Taking the suggestion, Scholar Song walks through the village marketplace and purposely bumps his shoulder with Gil-dong, who immediately apologizes to the scholar. Scholar Song gives him a long look before going on this way, but he sends a spy to observe Gil-dong during his gibang job. He comes up empty, and Scholar Song is convinced that Gil-dong is just an innocent gibang worker. Choongwongoon insists that there’s more to Gil-dong, but Scholar Song reminds him that he’s a respected scholar with an honorable reputation now. If he starts to make accusations that he was framed, he’ll be perceived as a corrupt royal once more. Scholar Song asks him to be patient and help him with an important issue, and he will return the favor. Choongwongoon asks what the important issue is, and Scholar Song responds: “There’s a big thief in our nation.â€

Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: Episode 18

rebel18-00006_zpsavggsl3f.jpg&key=0fae7a

Now this is more like it! Bashing in bad guys, getting justice for the poor—this was what I imagined when I signed on for a Hong Gil-dong drama in the first place. I’m glad the band of Hong brothers have found their true calling, and that this episode also served to help us connect the seemingly disparate storyline threads into a bigger idea with regards to the overarching plot.

EPISODE 18 RECAP

Scholar Song holds a small late night meeting with Choongwongoon, Jeong-hak, Mistress Jo, and his spy. Mori, seated at a respectful distance in the back, reports that Gil-dong is looking for his siblings. Jeong-hak and Choongwongoon want to use that information about Gil-dong’s weakness to somehow take him down. However, Scholar Jo insists that they are pillars of society and must not engage in morally lower acts. He cautions them to wait until the king’s anger passes. Jeong-hak does not agree with Scholar Song because he thinks that Gil-dong is dangerous. It doesn’t help that he’s still fully intent on revenge. So as he and his mother come out of the meeting, he expresses his opinion to her and implies that he’ll use Choongwongoon as bait. When Mistress Jo tries to protest against this method (perhaps she has a soft spot for the pitiful royal), Jeong-hak spouts inegalitarian Confucian principles about how social hierarchy dictates that women should follow men—and although she is his mother, he is now a grown man, so she should listen to him. After the meeting when he’s just alone with his spy, Scholar Song throws a spastic tantrum—teeth grinding, paper crushing, and all. He reveals his level of paranoia through his ravings.

With a crazed twisted expression on his face, he rants to his spy that there must be a political mastermind controlling Gil-dong’s band intent on coming between him and the king. In his delusions, he really believes that he would be Yeonsangun’s right-hand man if it weren’t for this imaginary nonentity whose sole goal is to wreck his relationship with the king. Mori trains in the forest, but between movements, he can’t help but think of Ga-ryung’s spunky attitude toward him. (Aww, emo eyeliner assassin has a crush on the cheerful ordinary girl.) He tries to shake off these intermittent thoughts that keep getting in the way of his concentration and punches a tree forcefully.

But suddenly, the earth turns dark as the tree is split into two, and he remembers the reason his father tried to kill him. During his childhood, he had also displayed the same Mighty Child strength as Gil-dong did, so his father, like Amogae (who did initially try to maim Gil-dong) had feared for the future of his family and attempted to kill him. Back at the government offices, Jo Jeong-hak, who has now been demoted, asks Deputy Governor (previously Magistrate) Eom to connect him with Gil-dong again. He apologizes, saying that he had made a big mistake the last time by storming out of their meeting.

When they meet at Hwalbin gibang, Gil-dong puts on his friendly merchant face again because Jeong-hak could potentially make a good contact later on. Similarly, Jeong-hak pretends that he’s on Gil-dong’s side, when actually he’s laying out his scheme. Sneakily, he tells Gil-dong about Choongwongoon’s confiscated property after the whole debacle went down four years ago. During their conversation, Jeong-hak slips in that a girl by the name of Eorini was on the list of slaves owned by Choongwongoon at the time of his arrest. At her name, Gil-dong’s expression turns into one of desperation.

Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: Episode 19

Q28a3G2.jpg&key=89b5fa93fdc857014e907d0c

Gil-dong continues to embark on his quest, but he begins to adopt a new purpose. We almost forget why he started on this journey in the first place as his purpose shifts from searching for his sister to fighting for the people. But that shift works in his favor, because he’s discovering much more about his potential as a true hero.

EPISODE 19 RECAP

Gil-hyun matches up the locations of the family disappearances and the Hong Hero appearances while Scholar Song angrily scolds Choongwongoon for losing the Hengrok (“heng†meaning “actions†+ “rok†meaning “record†= “Record of Actionsâ€). Gil-hyun reveals his findings to an elder minister and reports that the common thread among the disappeared families is that they were accused of defying social order. He requests to investigate this further outside the palace and catch the Hong Hero based on his projections from the map. The minister finds this coincidence strange and agrees to help Gil-hyun with this request.

Gil-dong happily reunites with his band of Hong Heroes after embarking on their own investigations of the Sugwidan (the elite group vowing to protect values). At their rendezvous, they pile up the copies of the Hengrok from all the Sugwidan households. All Sugwidan elites seemed to fear the “Geoin,†but didn’t know anything about them. Ilchung wonders what about the name coded in each of the books, and the rest of the gang is even more clueless. To answer Ilchung’s question, we’re shown Scholar Song’s full name in hanja, which is then coded into the Hengrok.

Yeonsangun paints a picture of himself, and Nok-soo admires his work. He tells her that this is how he views himself, and he wonders how others view him. Eunuch Kim enters the room, and Yeonsangun asks to bestow on Nok-soo the title of royal concubine. Eunuch Kim begins to explain the ranking of the royal concubines, but Nok-soo pays no attention to this and simply asks for a taste of the watermelons from Ming. When Nok-soo leaves the king’s quarters, she’s met with Eunuch Kim and asks him why he didn’t reveal her identity to the king. He responds to her with gratitude for comforting the king from his deep longing for his late mother, calling her by the title of a royal concubine. She praises him for being a loyal servant and looks pleased by his acquiescence.

The king asks his court to import Chinese watermelons for the royal banquet, but he’s met with tense silence. A brave minister speaks up that the watermelons from Joseon taste similar, and that such imports are unnecessary in this time of severe drought and famine. The people are begging for food on the streets, and villages are overrun with thieves. The king seems tired of the talk of thieves and the Hong Hero and abandons his excessive order in such dire circumstances. After the meeting, Eunuch Kim urges the king not to be mad at the ministers. But the king says that he’s not mad; he’s perplexed. He’s always wondered how the ministers viewed him, and after experiencing their nagging, he can finally understand how they view him. Hmm, curious.

I'm really happy about the way the dad died

He died happily

The only thing I regret is him not seeing the other sinvlings for the last time

I also love how the siblings r still alive

Hope they survive and if they die, they see each other one more time

Not like game of thrones

I'm still waiting for the stark siblings to be reconciled or at least know that they are still alive
