The leading actors of MBC’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday drama “Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People†(working title) recently gathered for the drama’s first script reading.

The script reading was held at MBC Broadcasting Station in Sangam on December 30 last year. Photos of Kim Sang Joong, Kim Ji Suk, Yoon Kyun Sang, Honey Lee, and Chae Soo Bin at the script reading have been released.

The drama revolves around the life of the historical figure Hong Gil Dong from the period of King Yeonsan’s rule. It is not to be confused with the fictitious character of the novel The Tale of Hong Gil Dong, although the novel was based on the actual person’s life story.

King Yeonsan (played by Kim Ji Suk) may have been born with a golden spoon in his mouth, but he could not win his people’s hearts. On the other hand, Hong Gil Dong (Yoon Kyun Sang) was born with a wooden spoon, but managed to gain the people’s trust. Their story is a stark contrast that explores the virtues needed to win over the populace.

The script reading proceeded in an amicable atmosphere as the actors asked after each other, and behind-the-scenes stories were told. Director Kim Jin Man talked about how Yoon Kyun Sang and Chae Soo Bin (who plays Song Ga Ryeong) had battled the cold when filming in the mountains the day before. He also said that Ah Mo Gae (Kim Sang Joong) has a very significant role in the first half of the drama, so he and the child actors had filmed until they almost collapsed.

The drama carries a heavy message that it aims to deliver in a superb manner. There is first the parallel between the happy and carefree Hong Gil Dong who travels around with his possessions on his back, and his father, Ah Mo Gae, who is determined not to pass his slave status down to his son. Next, there is the antagonist King Yeonsan, a cruel and ruthless tyrant. There is also Jang Nok Su (Honey Lee), the king’s consort whose beauty could launch a thousand ships, as well as the aforementioned Song Ga Ryeong, a bubbly and cheerful girl.

stealer_photo170106160850imbcdrama11.jpg

stealer_photo170106160850imbcdrama12.jpg

The director also took the opportunity to praise the actors for moulding to their roles well. In encouragement, he said, “Let’s keep up with the drama’s title, and steal the viewers’ hearts like Hong Gil Dong stole the people’s hearts.â€

Writer Hwang Jin Young also said, “I have full faith [in this]. With all these brilliant actors and staff, it’s like we have amassed an army. I promise to produce a script that will capture all your efforts.â€

Looks like another addition to this year’s must-watch list!

DRAMA CASTING & NEWS

Yoon Kyun-sang, Chae Soo-bin sign on for Rebel Hong Gil-dong

At last, we have a cast in place for MBC’s new fusion sageuk Rebel Hong Gil-dong, and I’m really excited to see this pairing: Yoon Kyun-sang (Doctors) has signed on to play the legendary Joseon folk hero Hong Gil-dong, and Chae Soo-bin (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) will play his leading lady. It’ll be the first time that either of them is headlining a drama, but they’re both solid actors who have proven their weight as supporting players in sageuk (Six Flying Dragons, Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) and contemporary dramas as well. Plus, they’re both so individually cute that they have to be cute together, right?

The new Monday-Tuesday series from PD Kim Jin-man of Kill Me, Heal Me and writer Hwang Jin-young of King’s Daughter, Soo Baek-hyang is a retelling of the legend of Hong Gil-dong, Joseon’s most famous fictional hero. He was the illegitimate son of a nobleman who stole from the rich and gave to the poor, and set up his own utopian nation that broke class barriers. The drama will set the story during the reign of famous tyrant king Yeonsangun, and paint Hong Gil-dong as Joseon’s first revolutionary activist.

Yoon Kyun-sang will play Hong Gil-dong, the leader of a smuggling ring who “knows the arts, knows women, knows laughter, and knows loyalty.†He has no interest in the political world of his father, and only needs nature and his horses to be happy. Clearly things will change to make him take an interest in what’s happening to the people of his nation, for him to rise up and take a stand.

Chae Soo-bin has been cast as a young widower who was rescued by Hong Gil-dong. She grows up into a young woman filled with revenge in her heart, and she dreams of the day when she can lure the king into bed and stab him to avenge the death of her husband. For her revenge she’ll even outdo Joseon’s famous femme fatale Jang No-suk, King Yeonsangun’s consort, played by Honey Lee (Come Back, Ajusshi). Lee will play the sole confidante to a mad king who stakes her whole life on him, but she’s never forgotten her first love, Hong Gil-dong.

Also joining the cast is Kim Ji-suk (Oh Hae-young Again) as a notorious killer who believes that all people are evil by nature. He spills untold amounts of blood for the sake of strengthening the royal power, but begins to lose his way and wonders whether he actually spilled all that blood to build a kingdom, or killed because he enjoyed seeing blood spilled. Well, this guy sounds scary.

Creepy killer aside, I’m actually glad that Kim Ji-suk isn’t playing the king, because he was Chae Soo-bin’s high school teacher in Sassy Go Go and I don’t want to think about her trying to seduce and murder him. See, there’s an upside to the death and mayhem! I’m really happy with how the cast turned out, even though right now I can only picture Yoon Kyun-sang and Chae Soo-bin in a puppy romance (because how adorable would that be?), but I’m sure they have it in them to be epic and heroic and heart-wrenching too. Make us proud!

Rebel Hong Gil-dong follows Night Light on Mondays and Tuesdays in January.

Yoon Kyun-sang’s sorrowful tears in Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People teaser

http://www.dramabeans.com/2017/01/yoon-kyun-sangs-sorrowful-tears-in-rebel-thief-who-stole-the-people-teaser/

The first teaser for MBC’s anticipated sageuk Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People, starring Yoon Kyun-sang (Doctors), has been released. Written by Hwang Jin-young (King’s Daughter Soo Baek-hyang) and directed by Kim Jin-man (Kill Me, Heal Me), this upcoming drama retells the legend of the righteous thief Hong Gil-dong as a hero who fought against injustices and helped the people rise above oppression.

During the bloodiest time of the Joseon dynasty, a boy named Hong Gil-dong is born the illegitimate son of a slave. A slight twist on the original tale, the father, played by Kim Sang-joong (Jingbirok, Bad Guys), is shown as the slave instead of the mother. Not wanting to confer his lowly status onto his son, he does everything he can to elevate his social class.

The thirty-second teaser gives us a glimpse of Hong Gil-dong’s difficult childhood and his father who warns him of the unfair discrimination against baseborn people. Then in a short scene, the father holds the crying boy down while wielding a wooden bat, as if to strike him, while he says “never tell anyone this secret.†(Do they exchange identities for ones of noble birth?)

Despite Hong Gil-dong’s humble origins, or perhaps because of them, he becomes a champion of the people. The despotic tyrant-king Yeonsangun, played by Kim Ji-suk (Oh Hae-young Again), is featured in the teaser with a crazed glint in his eye as he laughs. A short clip is shown of Honey Lee (Come Back Ajusshi), dancing in an outside courtyard; she plays the femme fatale and Hong Gil-dong’s first love who goes from being a gisaeng to the king’s concubine. In addition, Chae Soo-bin (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds), who plays the petite but courageous widow who becomes the hero’s final love, stands and smiles in the sunlight for the teaser. In the last voiceover, someone asks Hong Gil-dong if they’re done now, but he replies: “No, this is only the beginning.â€

The first episode of MBC’s Monday-Tuesday drama Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People airs on January 30.

DRAMA CASTING & NEWS

First glimpse of MBC’s Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People

by chickachunga

rl14.jpg

The first stills of MBC’s new Monday-Tuesday drama Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People have been released, and actors Yoon Kyun-sang (Doctors), Kim Ji-suk (Oh Hae-young Again), Honey Lee (Come Back, Ajusshi), and Kim Sang-joong (Jingbirok) appear to be settling into their characters and sageuk garb with ease.

Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People is set during the tumultuous era of tyrant King Yeonsangun’s reign and centers around Hong Gil-dong, arguably Korea’s most famous folk hero. But unlike the classic tale in which he stole material goods from the rich and gave to the poor, the Hong Gil-dong of this drama is a “thief†of people’s hearts, winning their trust and support despite his low birth and poor upbringing.

Yoon Kyun-sang plays this thief of hearts, and Kim Ji-suk takes on the role of ruthless King Yeonsangun of Joseon, born with a golden spoon in his mouth, but unable to win the favor of his people despite his royal pedigree and power. Written by Hwang Jin-young (King’s Daughter Soo Baek-hyang) and directed by Kim Jin-man (Kill Me, Heal Me), Rebel aims to depict the virtues one must embody in order to succeed as a leader of the people.

rl12.jpg

The stills of Hong Gil-dong and King Yeonsangun in their first encounter were taken last month at Hwangmae mountain where production commenced. A producer for the show stated that Hwangmae mountain also served as the first location of the wildly beloved 2006 sageuk Jumong that garnered 50% in viewership ratings, which made it a very meaningful first shoot for Rebel, where the spirit of Jumong was felt throughout.

Kim Sang-joong plays Hong Gil-dong’s father, Ah Mo Gae, a poor servant and father who defies his low standing in society to provide for his two sons: studious, eldest son Gil-hyun and strong, mighty second son Gil-dong. He’s a man who stands against the unjust establishment, and actor Kim Sang-joong stated that Ah Mo Gae represents the people of today; the parallels from past and present history do not escape him, and he’s channeling that knowledge to give a deep and affecting performance.

rl13.jpg

rl16.jpg

rl5.jpg

Honey Lee plays famous Joseon femme fatale Jang Nok-su, King Yeonsangun’s confidante and consort, and in this story, her first and forever love is Hong Gil-dong. Chae Soo-bin (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) rounds out the main cast as Song Ga-ryung, a young widow and Hong Gil-dong’s leading lady who desires to kill Yeonsangun to avenge the death of her husband.

It’s definitely going to be a twist on the Hong Gil-dong legend we know, but PD Kim Jin-man has stated that he purposely wanted to have a young, trustworthy hero in Yoon Kyun-sang’s Hong Gil-dong. Perhaps the spirit of Jumong will bring high ratings for Rebel, a drama that already looks quite promising with its solid cast.

Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People will premiere on MBC after Night Light ends early this year.
