  • Ruler–Master of the Mask: Episodes 37-38RulerMask37-01698.jpg

As Sun reclaims what’s rightfully his, he struggles to protect his people — and himself — from Dae-mok’s scheming. Thankfully, our king both protects his people and finds his strength through them. I enjoyed these episodes, though I can’t say whether it’s more because they were genuinely enjoyable or because I’m happy to see everything wrap up in a happily-ever-after. Ruler–Master of the Mask may not have been all of our hopes and dreams, but I’ll be glad to live on the few shining moments it did give us as we get ready to say goodbye. Forever.

EPISODE 37 RECAP

RulerMask37-00155.jpg

Faced with two conflicting kings, the ministers demand that Sun and Lee Sun prove their identities to the court. Sun complies at once, describing a prank he once played on the Minister of Justice as a child. The startled Minister of Justice confirms the truth of the memory, causing a stir among the court. Lee Sun immediately counters with a memory of his own, however, putting them back at square one.

When the second state councilor notes suspiciously that only one of the kings could describe his childhood, however, the chief state councilor (Dae-mok’s advisor) takes matters into his own hands. Knowing that Lee Sun has three moles on the back of his neck, the chief state councilor declares that the true king has three moles on the back of his neck, and asks the court to see which man has those moles. Lee Sun smugly reveals his moles to the ministers, sending them leaning back to Lee Sun’s side.

But the Minister of Inspector General steps up to offer his own test. He describes a time when a young Prince Sun was badly injured playing ball, giving him a cross-shaped scar on his arm. When another minister confirms this memory, Sun pulls back his sleeve to reveal the scar to the court. The minister moves toward Lee Sun to check his arm as well, but thinking fast, Lee Sun shouts at him not to dare touch his royal robes. The other ministers erupt, arguing over which proof is sufficient.

RulerMask37-01706.jpg RulerMask37-01714.jpg

The chief of the Water Bureau interrupts next, urging the ministers to have the kings remove their masks – even if no one knows the king’s true face, they just might recognize the impostor.

Sun agrees to take off the mask, telling Lee Sun to remove his mask as well. As soon as they do, the chief of the Water Bureau loudly identifies Sun as the chief peddler, causing the ministers to accuse him of impersonating the king.

COMMENTS

Aw, Gon! Surprisingly, Gon seems to have achieved the most character development throughout this drama – and only in these final moments did I realize how much I enjoyed watching him grow. I’m glad that the show addressed, even indirectly, his romantic feelings for Hwa-goon, because it does add a lot of depth to his character as an unfeeling, dutiful guard to a citizen with purpose and room to change. He probably spoke more words in the last five minutes than he did through the show’s entire run, and I found his speech convincing and well-done, and probably only as effective as it was because of his established character as an obedient servant thus far.

The fact that the plot picked up so rapidly in these last few weeks has made it hard for me to hate Ruler—Master of the Mask as much as find it unfortunate. With details like Gon’s character development, Lee Sun’s relationship with Kko-mool, and Lee Sun’s surprisingly discomforting expressions of cynicism against the king and the system, I found moments that I really enjoyed in these episodes – at the bare minimum, enough to aleviate my raw disappointment for the aspects that weren’t so well done (cough Ga-eun’s character cough).

I don’t think this show was necessarily bad, especially when looking at it from a holistic perspective – that is, the cinematography, the performances, the music, etc. Though the writing left much to be desired, I think that realizing that the writers are newbies makes this show less an overambitious failure and more of a serviceable starting point for them to learn from their mistakes. Plenty of the show worked fine, just not great; it seems that they bit off a little more than they could chew in their idealism, perhaps blinded by the epic concept and unable to look at it from a big picture perspective. Writing is a learning process, however, so I can only hope that the writers will take this opportunity to learn.

I’m most disappointed that the principal idealistic questions that I was excited about – the relationship between the servant Lee Sun and king Sun, the duty of the mask, the question of finding yourself beneath societal obligations – remain totally unanswered. By the end, it became clear that the fast pace that was such a boon in its early run became a bane to the show, because it resulted in constantly generating new story threads where there really didn’t need to be new threads, creating a mess with too many plates to juggle effectively.

If only the show recognized that its initial episodes carried plenty of potential for emotionally weighty character investigation, I can’t even imagine what a masterpiece the concept could have created, and what a challenge in acting it would have presented the actors, pushing them to give more personalized, dynamic performances. But the fact is that the show is coming to an end, and it’s time to say goodbye. It may have abandoned its idealistic questions, but at the very least, it seems that the production team plans to neatly tie up the key plot questions and give us closure there. I’ll at least look forward to seeing Dae-mok’s face when he falls off his throne of darkness and runs out of tea.

Herald Pop via Naver: 'Ruler' finale, Yoo Seung Ho ♥Kim So Hyun,  L loses his life, happy ending

1. [+4,572, -70] Writer, don't attempt to write another drama!!!!

2. [+3,822, -80] Ah the finale is so childish, the most anticlimactic ending ever ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ I'll skip all this writer's works in the future. All the energy went towards making the two leads into annoying characters. Yoo Seung Ho and Kim So Hyun, you worked hard ã…œã…œ

3. [+2,748, -71] Sigh...Can't believe the ending didn't have one happy moment

4. [+2,860, -179] The writing is terrible but Yoo Seung Ho and the rest of the cast kept me going. Thanks for your hardwork everyone. Did they forget about Hwagun?? The writer totally neglected him but we viewers won't forget him.. By the way, Ga Eun is an annoying character

5. [+1,974, -76] Watched it for the cast despite the crappy directing. Thanks for your hard work

6. [+722, -13] The entire finale hysterical.. I was expecting Lee Sun to expose Dae Mok's scheme with the help of the prince but the writer went the cliche route and made him greedy for the throne, then in the end he dies saving Ga Eun... It's too predictable that it's funny.. Yoo Seung Ho and Heo Jun Ho carried the drama. Who's the masked person in the mountains who got orders from Daemok?

7. [+540, -16] Who's the person wearing a mask in Pyunsoohwi

8. [+601, -44] Yoo Seung Ho practically dragged the drama by the collar ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ It started off good, but the story got frustrating as it went on. I hope Seung Ho lands a better drama next time. Thanks to the cast who worked hard until the very end ã…œã…œã…œã…œã…œã…œã…œã…œ

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching??

How did the finales stack up for you this week? There were a number of shows to say goodbye to, and I’m always surprised by how differently I’ll feel about a show at the beginning and at the end of it. Were there any dramas that you were particularly sad to part with, or have you already cleared the way for something new? â€“girlfriday

HeadsNo2

  • Ruler–Master of the Mask: At least Yoo Seung-ho’s back from army and won’t be going anywhere. It just makes me sad, because he can be so amazingly compelling in a sageuk role (I still remember Warrior Baek Dong-soofondly), but this role just gave him too little to do. There was so much potential for this entire show, but at every turn, the writers took the path of least resistance, leading to undercooked characters and storylines. Guess you can’t win ‘em all.

(part 1 of 3 )
[interview] <Monarch > Kim Sohyun, "I cried with the writer at the end of the day." (Source: MBC Entertainment | Naver TV Entertainment) http://naver.me/FCiZ7Beb
..
I met Kim So Hyun after the closing ceremony. Kim So-hyun, who played a role of a so-called "Han-ga-eun" who wanted to get revenge on Se-Ja (Yoo Seung-ho), who was beheaded her father (Jeon-nomin) in the <Monarch>, eventually helped him to become a king. To-date, Kim So-hyun showed a successful acting transformation that no longer comes to mind with the tag that the actor from childhood is no longer appearing because of her intelligent and charming charm.

Kim So Hyun, however, expressed a humble feeling that it was a work that made her realize her shortage throughout the interview. She also expressed sympathy with viewers' unhappy minds around the <Monarch> including the volume and character of the protagonists, but she did not blame other people and showed her mature appearance. What was the meaning of "Monarch", which was also the first in many respects, to Kim So-hyun?
..
Q: What if you have a special concern for your character?

It was not as expressive as I thought it was, but I wanted to give it a sense of being smart of Ga Eun from my childhood. It is not a style that goes like an in - house director, but I am talking about it in a silent way. So I tried to give a feeling of power from my eyes. And since all the characters in the play have appeared since childhood, they still have not perfect and lack sides. I wanted to bring out the growth period of the characters who overcome those parts.

0000029890_003_20170715132551767.jpg?typ

(part 2 of 3)

Q Have you ever thought that you would have behaved differently if you are Ga Eun?

It's probably the same mindset as the viewers. (Laughter) The 20 EP is long but you can not put all the faces of all the characters. I understand such situations, but I am afraid that it would be nice if the process of forgiveness was better explained. I think it was ending with love, anger, revenge, love without forgiveness. And how good it would be if I had spoken. (Laughter) I know that everyone knows that it's not Seja kill my father but only Ga Eun builds a misunderstanding by herself, and the circumstances around her stop the eyes and ears of her . It was a part of the run of the script , but I was a little sad.
..
Q What was the most difficult scene in shooting?

It was so cold when it was cold and it was so hot when it was hot. The most difficult thing was that when Seja died, the cave was much colder than I thought it was and it was not so good. The situation itself was not easy. It was a burden to me because it was a scene of exploding the anger and killing and knowing the feelings of Seja. I've been taking so long, I've had a hard time crying and crying. In fact, it was the first time I was angry, crying and acting like this work, so it was all a challenge for me.

(part 3 of 3)

I also called OST directly.

My confidence in the song has fallen this time. (Laugh) I was singing the ost on the day without too much time to prepare or practicing. Those who do well are actually not expecting much. (Laugh) I did not have a high tone, but the tone was so high that it was too high. But it makes sense to call OST with my voice in my drama. Next time, I will try to get the training properly.

Q Meaning of <Monarch> to Kim Sohyun?

It was a great opportunity for me because I played the lead role of the first historical drama and had done a long breathing work. There were a lot of shortcomings, but it will be a memorable piece for the future.

Q Last greeting

I would like to thank the viewers who have been faithful to <Monarch> and the fans. I am sorry that I seemed to show a lot of scarcity while playing this role but I will show you how to move on from the better works in the future.

Sun’s journey from masked prince to rightful king comes to an end, and though this may be where we leave our hero, Sun’s quest to become a true leader is only just beginning.

EPISODE 39 RECAP

Ga-eun and Woo Bo struggle to make the antidote for the poppy pill when a voice suddenly tells them to use the root of the flower. Hwa-goon’s father appears, much to their surprise—and even more astonishingly, he hands over the instructions for making the antidote.

Woo Bo reads the instructions and deems them to be real, but Ga-eun questions Hwa-goon’s father, confused as to why he would help them. He tells her that it’s none of her business since he made a deal with the king.

COMMENTS

It’s finally over. It’s been a bumpy ride with some ups and downs, but the show pulled off a satisfactory end that left me content. The last few episodes have been fast-paced, and while I appreciated the quick plot movement, I felt that the ending seemed a bit rushed as a consequence. There were a lot of hasty revelations like Lee Sun discovering Hyun-seok’s identity and finding Woo Bo, but the overall ending was quite emotional and made up for it.

I was surprised by how much I actually enjoyed the final scenes of Dae-mok and Lee Sun—especially the latter. I found Dae-mok’s last moments to be quite poignant, and thought the acting, writing, and cinematography were all amazing in that scene. It’s a fitting end for a prideful man, so unwilling to admit defeat that he chose death over surrendering. Though it’s also a moment of triumph for our hero, it was mostly a forlorn farewell since Dae-mok died in his chair like a lonesome king on his throne. The way the camera panned away as light streamed in from behind was beautiful and accentuated his solitude.

Dae-mok’s final message suggests that he may have finally recognized Sun as a worthy king, and it reminded me that though Dae-mok became an indisputable monster who sacrificed innocent lives for his own gain, he may have started off as a soul thrown into the pits of despair when he truly wanted to bring about change, much like Sun. In the end, he only brought more pain and suffering to his family—the very reason he turned into a monster for in the beginning—and though he claims to have no regrets, I sincerely doubt it.

The other memorable end to this episode was Lee Sun’s. Much like Dae-mok’s, it was a fitting swan song for the fake king who wallowed in self-pity and hurt those he most loved near the end of his life. Lee Sun died saving Ga-eun, which acted as a nice bookend to their relationship. He started off with undivided devotion and adoration for his lady, which then morphed into an obsession, and in the end, he gave his life for her, almost as if his final act was his way of atoning for his sins. From beginning to end, Lee Sun was about Ga-eun, for better or for worse, and his ending brought some resolution to the character and his relationship with Sun and Ga-eun.

The tiny “noble idiocy†arc that occurred at the last minute wasn’t the most exciting or thoughtful plot device (especially since it happened before in the show), but it did serve its purpose nicely, which was to unite the lovers once and for all. It acted as a catalyst for Sun to share his true feelings with Ga-eun, and it also forced Ga-eun to truly ask herself if she’s happy living apart from Sun. I enjoyed Sun’s profession about needing Ga-eun to keep him on the right path, but I wish more of that was actually shown through action, rather than words. It would have been nice to see their relationship actually grow, but for most of the time, the two of them have been kept apart and there weren’t too many interactions between them that showed how they needed each other. However, like Lee Sun said, the petal has fallen, and what’s done is done. While Ruler will probably disappear into the chronicles of dramaland as time passes, for now, I say farewell and thank you.

[interview] "Ruler: Master of the Mask" Yoo Seung-ho, "I look forward to my reward vacation"

photo869418.jpg

Yoo Seung-ho is very upright. He turned down a special administration offer to college and he joined the military when he was 21. He's a good example for many and he's grown up well.

Yoo Seung-ho starred in the MBC drama "Ruler: Master of the Mask" as Prince Yi Seon.

"Ruler: Master of the Mask" took 7 months to finish. It was longer than expected and Yoo Seung-hothought he'd be happy once it was over. However, he says he misses being on site now that it's over. "I was hard but fun and I miss everyone. It's like this for every drama".

Yoo Seung-ho says he put a lot of effort in expression. He talked to his co-stars about details. He said, "When Yi Seon was a young man he was wearing a mask so he felt suffocated and guilty but when he was outside the palace he was energetic and joyful. I went back to being a little boy acting out this part. When he grew up, he hurt a lot as his mother and father passed away and the father of the woman I love lost her parents because of me. The mood of the drama went down several notches".

He claims he got a lot of help from those around him while making "Ruler: Master of the Mask". He remembers working with Heo Joon-ho the most. "I thought he'd be tougher on me. He told me if he did, my character would be more depressing. He told me to do as I wished and he would follow. I was grateful. The ending would have to be the prince sitting on the throne and Dae Mok being defeated".

Yoo Seung-ho left a strong impression with "Ruler: Master of the Mask" once again. He's not so much of 'the nation's little brother' anymore. "I am so happy people see me that way and I think it's all thanks to the way the drama flowed. I put in a lot of effort and many people around me helped to make it happen".

photo869419.jpg

"I read all the comments. I look at them if the drama does well, but I don't see them if the drama isn't doing so well. I do that so that the comments don't influence me in my performance in the drama. I loved the comments that told me I 'act well'. It gave me a lot of strength. "Ruler: Master of the Mask" was a drama which allowed me to show who I really am. I couldn't help but feel anxious before that. I felt comfortable making "Ruler: Master of the Mask" and everyone who watched it also told me the same thing".

"Ruler: Master of the Mask" stayed in first place and put up a good fight for MBC. Yoo Seung-homentioned 'reward vacation'. "I heard "Ruler: Master of the Mask" was one of the most successful dramas in MBC recently. I thought MBC might send us on a reward vacation, but I am just happy that the drama did so well".

"Ruler: Master of the Mask" was a ray of sun for Yoo Seung-ho. "The Joseon Magician" and "Barefoot Ki-bong" failed terribly. He said he worried that "Ruler: Master of the Mask" wouldn't do so well either but it helped him quench his thirst. "I did worry about the results. If the director is the captain, I am in first class and it puts a lot of weight on my shoulders. If things didn't work out, it would have seemed like my fault.

photo869421.jpg

Yoo Seung-ho has been in movies and dramas continuously and he said he won't be in medieval anymore. "The costumes and wigs are so heavy. I don't think I'll want to be in another medieval for a couple of years".

Yoo Seung-ho debuted in the year 2000 drama "Stickleback Fish" and he's on his eighteenth year. "I think it's become a daily life for me. I have never thought of acting as 'work'. When I was young I did it because my parents made me do it but it's just become daily for me. It's fun and I am comfortable with it. I strive myself to do better every day".

"I feel happy when ever single cut is put together to make a final big piece. When that big piece is successful and I get good reactions to it, I feel even better. It's very addictive; this acting job".

If Yoo Seung-ho hadn't started acting, what would he be doing? I would be at school, being very ordinary. It's not like I have a knack for sports and I'm not that smart so I wouldn't have a job too".

photo869420.jpg

It became a big issue when Yoo Seung-ho gave up university. He says he doesn't regret it. He claims he doesn't like studying. "A few reasons I didn't go to college was because I didn't like studying and if I go, someone else would have to be dropped. I'd rather give the chance to someone who really wants it. However, reports didn't mention that I said I didn't like studying and made me look good. I just don't like studying. I did that while I worked in junior and high school but it was tough".

"For example, in Ilsan, there aren't many cars in Ilsan so when I am waiting for a light, I wonder if I have to wait until the 'walk' sign comes on. But then again, I worry that someone might take a picture and say, "This is who he really is". I don't know what's right or wrong. I have to be happy and I'm 25. I want to be comfortable with my life. As long as I don't break the law, I want to be able to cross the street when the light is still red".

photo869423.jpg

He doesn't have any SNS. "I just can't put up a selfie and write a cheesy comment about the weather. I don't like taking pictures. I don't mind having my picture taken but I just don't. I take pictures for proof like when I'm telling my mother where I am. My friends don't take pictures to. I don't think a lot of guys take pictures".

Yoo Seung-ho says he doesn't have celebrity friends. He likes playing computer games, snooker and bowling with his friends. He has a friend who farms so he helps with that too. "I enjoy driving my friend's truck around and enjoying a quiet dinner with music. It's a great thing to be with your friends".

He says 'work' is the biggest concern on his mind right now. "I've been praised so much for "Ruler: Master of the Mask" so I'm afraid I won't be able to do better in the next drama. I worry about what I'll be doing next. I feel anxious about the next thing when I have only just finished "Ruler: Master of the Mask"".

photo869422.jpg

Yoo Seung-ho says he takes many people's thoughts into consideration when he chooses a drama. He says, "No one knows what a few words on paper will turn out like on camera. It's like gambling but you have to enjoy it and do your best. I think choosing a scenario that reads well and suits me well is the most important thing".

He mentioned what he would like to do next. He would like to be bad now. "I think it's very appealing, meeting a tragic end because of my evilness. I would like to try many different roles".

"I wish people enjoy what I do and the characters I perform. I don't need to be famous, but I would like people to enjoy what I do. That's my priority, to be a good actor and having people like it regardless of popularity".
