r&b ballad is an actual genre. to be fair, there's no strict delineations between genres and you can always mix and match genres, some with better results than others. tmwtd is considered r&b ballad with edm elements, at least according to sm.

you might be thinking about sentimental ballads, which is a specific subgenre. even then, it can be slow-tempo or mid-tempo. but yea, don't worry about the genre and just enjoy the music.
