Were you ever forced to learn an instrument?

Even though I'm Asian, my parents never had the whole stereotypical "you must learn piano or violin" mindset. But I know many other fellow Asian friends whose parents had them learn piano/violin/whatsoever at a young age. There is this one friend I know where his mom would force him to practice and practice everyday and he did, for hours upon hours everyday for competitions and recitals and whatnot. But when he got to university, he pretty much stopped and hasn't touched the piano since.

There are more friends I know that are like this... they would reach a super high level of playing piano/violin whatnot but then they would never touch the instrument again after going into university... honestly I think it's sort of sad that one would spent so many hours perfecting their craft and win all these awards but then never touch play again in their life.. but you do you, I guess.

Because of school I had to learn how to play an instrument and my parents decided I should learn cello.

I hated having to play an instrument that was larger than me (I was only 6 after all) and never really expressed an interest in it. After moving schools when I was ten, I stopped and refused to look back since.

I was Asian-forced into piano when I was four. I went into the competitive scale and everything, competitions in different countries and all that fun stuff. Up until I was eight I had to be told or yelled at to practice. I don't know at what point I started loving piano; it just happened. I practiced for up to even seven hours on my own, just because. I quit around junior year of high school to focus on academics, but picked it up again, not as a student or performer, but a teacher. I'm a freshman at university now, but I still teach. And still, music (of all genres now except country lol) is one of the biggest things in my life. I'm occasionally grateful for my compositional knowledge and background, too, because it helps in tons of circumstances.

tl;dr: yes, I liked it

Idk. I think they did somewhat, but they weren't super passionate about and it was just something that was done because their parents wanted them to do it, which is sad in my eyes.

sad that they're doing it just for their parents?

a lot of them don't really have a say in the matter until they're way older

also idk if your use of the word sad is pitiful or disdainful to these ppl :|

naw it's me feeling sorry for them yo... I know what it's like to be forced to do something (in my case it was trying out sports like tennis, hockey and swimming) and as a kid, it sucked because I didn't understand the importance of it, but now that I'm older I'm thankful.

Tbh I just stumbled across a subreddit where these people were talking discussing about why most Asian parents have their kids learn an instrument and what really caught me was the some comments saying that it's just their way showing off their kid and their talents which I definitely had mixed feelings about. I mean of course not all parents are selfish in that regard, but it really made me think why, you know?
