[Drama Review] 'Missing 9' - Episode 2

Even from a viewer's point of view, I'm finding it a little difficult to completely take her story as real. My point goes along with the observation from episode 1, in that because a good part of the story is told from Bong Hee's memory, and memory tends to be selective and imaginative, even if Bong Hee doesn't mean to remember things the way she does, she could be leaving out important details. This is also a good time for me to again point out the slight difference in scene structure, with the two screen shots below:

In this scene, which is a foggy memory in Bong Hee's head, the screen becomes thinner, and you can see the MBC logo and the drama's title outside of the frame. When scenes become like this, how much of it is real?

lee-sun-bin_1484962014_5.jpg&key=0399ea9

This scene is a little tricky as well, since it is a scene that Lee Yeol (played by EXO's Chanyeol) told Bong Hee about instead of Bong Hee actually living it herself, but the main difference from the previous scene is that the logos sit inside the frame. The overall gray tone of the scene is still a big indicator to tell it apart from other scenes taking place in reality.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Missing 9" Episode 2

photo810604.jpg

Relief, despair, frustration and every other imaginable entry in the gamut of human emotion is felt by our stranded duo of idol and stylist, as Bong-hee manages to regain the part of her memories taking place immediately after the crash. Survival is the name of the game and Joon-oh is just not very good at it. Meanwhile, a body is washed ashore in the present and the mystery of what happened on the island becomes more complicated.

First things first, I want to talk about Bong-hee (Baek Jin-hee) and her very intriguing, very refreshing personality. The lady is clearly highly perceptive, as evident by the fact that even after all her trauma, she can read her interrogators and their intentions like an open book. She is a natural survivor, but this also brings about some possibilities which are unnerving. I consider Bong-hee capable of harm and I love how the creators and actress hint at this just enough to spark doubt.

photo810600.jpgphoto810601.jpg

Bong-hee is inexperienced in the world of glamor, she is sweet and sometimes vulnerable, but she is also tough as nails. So far, she is not the typical lead of her type; the kind who can be bold in words, but cannot stand their ground and who crumbles from all their fragile angelic emotions. She is nicely contrasted by Joon-oh (Jeong Kyeong-ho) who does have some abilities, but is content to only use them when everyone else is in distress.

Back to the present day, we get more on Yoon  Tae-yeong (Yang Dong-geun), whom I had sorely misjudged in episode one. I thought his smirk upon Bong-hee's return showed satisfaction over her memory loss. In retrospect, it was perhaps a reaction to Jo Hee-kyeong's (Song Ok-sook) shameless media play. A man like him in grief might be a great ally for Bong-hee, because of his personal connection. At the same time, this connection might cause suspicion and the grief could make him vicious. I am highly intrigued by his potential.

The series is smart in providing several mysteries. The editing can be confusing at times, which may be a problem if the drama picks up its pace in unwrapping the mystery, but everything is pretty easy to keep track of so far. Some minor issues are distracting, such as the freshly washed hair and mostly clean clothes on everyone, but I can live with Dramaland beautification if everything else is solid.

The next big question to address is whether Bong-hee's memory is gone due to trauma or whether she is pretending. The "why" in both is exciting to think about. If the crash did not break her, what could traumatize her to the point of denial through memory loss? Is it just So-hee's (Ryoo Won) murder? If she does remember, why would she fear the consequences of telling people? I want answers, "Missing 9". Provide them slowly and beautifully.

"Missing 9" is directed by Choi Byeong-gil, written by Son Hwang-won and features Jeong Kyeong-hoBaek Jin-heeOh Jeong-se and Choi Tae-joon.

mte, if she died on the island and was washed ashore to one of the islands in China, surely her body would have rotted because of the water. But lmao I actually googled and it seems like the body can remain intact in cold water so that's a possibility..

If that can happen, I totally believe now that they were scaping from the island together but something happened while they were travelling, since the body was found several days or even a week or two after they found Ra Bonghee in the beach.

Idk what to think with just two episodes aired.

This drama is driving me crazy, just two episodes I am questioning everything. Lmao I considered every person in that island to be killers at this moment.

Most reviews seem to think the beige represents her memories and the vivid colour as the present time, but in the flash memories scenes in ep 2 she and other survivors were wearing vivid colours too. Is this her "real" memory then hahaha but anyway, really excited for the next episode! Thanks Francella as always for the constant updates! Edited by angg

I'm genuinely curious about everything this drama has presented so far, the story line is refreshing for once!

I hope it won't be ruined by multiple love scenes or randomly involved love interests, it's a K-drama after all :imstupid: Those cheesy scenarios trow me off completely resulting in me loosing interest no matter how good the plot might sound like. I wish they carry on with the thrill with a touch of light comedy concept in the upcoming episodes, I really like where this is going to, thus far.

Notably I find every character to be interesting and memorable in it's own way, I didn't have a hard time remembering who's who, they all are pretty distinctive. At first I was wondering what were the possible reasons deciding on Ra bong-hee to be the sole witness. However it all made sense since she's the only outsider / non celebrity among the bunch, the non "infected" character by the whole agency's conspiracy as she has find her way into the plane due to weird circumstances, she's still fairly new to the scene considering it's been what? her first day working as a Joon-ah's stylist yet it has ended up with a plane crush  now I can't think of anyone else fitting to be the objective story-teller, the only survivor. I do believe there is something fishy about this entertainment agency especially the ones in power or those attached to it, somehow it seems like a bad place to belong to, too many secrets to unfold.

Regarding Chanyeol am I the only one skeptical about his protectiveness over the main lead? he seems to be taking his side a lot at least for now, I recall that one declaration Joon-oh stated when he was being interrogated by the press, admitting he indeed was drunk but not the one driving under the influence, I'm kind of suspicious about the true identity of the culprit could it be Chanyeol? the latter for whatever reason voluntarily took the blame for the accident(?)

Also it's been only two episodes and we have a death revealing already!! it's so soon.

Another thing is the earthy color palette degradation, could it represent the order in which everyone dies?

Yes I know that's indeed a possibility. Let's stay tuned and see who might be the next victim, it will help clarify if there is some pattern of any sort.
