After Donald Trump's win, Hawkers Mexico, a Spanish sunglass company, tweeted the following message (translation below the image):

Mexicans, put on these glasses to hide your swollen eyes tomorrow at the wall's construction. #electionNight

Shortly after, Sergio "El Checo" Pérez, Mexican Formula 1 pilot and image of the company, responded with the following tweet which has already garnered over 57,000 likes and 28,000 retweets.

What a terrible comment. As of today, I conclude my relation with @HawkersMX. I will never allow anyone to make fun of my Country! #MexicoUnited

El Checo Pérez later revealed that as a result, he had halted the production of 20,000 pairs of sunglasses with his name on them.

The Formula 1 driver was not the only one to break ties with the Spanish company. Los Diablos Rojos, one of Mexico's biggest baseball teams, tweeted the following.

. @HawkersMX Our #PassionForMexico comes before anything else, as of today, your products will no longer be sold in our store.

Hawkers MX immediately deleted their original tweet, wrote several tweets, and even published a video apologizing.

Friends, I'm totally Mexican, I didn't use the tweet to "mock", one of the most characteristic traits we have as Mexicans is to laugh at everything

One of our most important festivities is the Day of the Dead, we even mock death itself, an apology if you were offended.

We have deleted the offensive Tweets so as not to offend anyone else. Again, #WeAreSorryFromTheBottomOfOurHeartsMexico

As a Mexican, I accept that I fucked up but that's no excuse to hide, everyone's challenge is to get up and keep going, no matter the mistakes made.

Hello, I'm David Moreno, I'm one of the founders of Hawkers. I'm recording this message to offer my most sincere apologies to everyone who could've felt offended by the message we published in our Hawkers MX profile. I want to say, both from me and my team, that that tweet, that unfortunate and tasteless joke doesn't represent us or our way of thinking. We are completely against any manifestation of hate, any expression of racism, we are absolutely against any type of discrimination. We are a young company, we are entrepreneurs incredibly respectful and don't feel anything other than an immense affection towards the Mexican people. We have taken note. I know that this is certainly not the best way to communicate our uneasiness. I am sure that our press team will tell me that this isn't the way to go but I think that just like I'm available to receive rewards and to receive praise, I think I should be available in this moment. I have said it, my personal apologies and apologies on my team's behalf towards everyone who tonight (sorry, tonight in Spain, afternoon in Mexico) has been offended, which is understandable. I send a big hug and am at your disposal via my twitter. Greetings.

Several people have been defending Hawkers (you can find these messages in Hawker's twitter profile):

User 1:

Anyone can fuck up, but not everyone apologizes. Well done there. @HawkersMX

User 2:

I have no idea who manages your SNS but you're the best at addressing the issue #IAmMexican and I give you the #RightToRespond #WishYouSuccess

User 3:

It's fucked up that people are now complaining about @HawkersMX when in Mexico we make fun of everything. Greetings, dude. Send me some sunglasses.

Personally, I was not offended by the tweet. It is true that we Mexicans are known for our sense of humor; a sense of humor for which nothing is off limits. I just think that people were on the edge and the guy who wrote the tweet just happened to have terrible timing.

English, mutha*ucka, do you speak it?  I don't speak the Me-hico.

B*tch, are you illiterate??

Yeah, I agree it was terrible timing, plus the "joke" is not even funny.

Yeah, it wasn't  . It sounds like the guy who wrote it was trying too hard. Do you think he was fired??

Apparently you can't even speak or write English so not expecting you to know how to speak 'Mexico'.

I know that a lot of people are joking about this but this pendejo was trying to hard and if he didn't lose the contracts he wouldn't have apologized.

And lol at that comparation to a el dia de muertos.

It's kind of ridiculous that this person tweeted "well I'm Mexican" as if that makes the joke alright. He can and others in his company can joke all they want, but people are really upset and will hit them where it hurts the most, their pockets!

Fue una estupidez de ellos, aunque yo entiendo que fue un chiste. Lo bueno es que ya aprendieron.

If there's a silver lining in Trumps win, it's finally nice to see people exposing their true nature & thoughts so people can stop supporting them, giving their money and put it into other businesses.

Funny how it's always a joke until that money stops coming in, expecting more businessses, celebrities and people in general to mess up like this
