What do you guys think about OCs?

I tend to like them, but have such an issue with "Mary Sue"s. During my time as a fanfic author I used to have idol/actor x OC pairings, but tried my best to slap the Mary Sue out of my OC (don't know if I was successful each time).

I have noticed that some on here hate them xD so I was curious to what writers and readers think about them and why you guys like them or not

I love them to death if the writer knows how to do them properly.

I personally make OCs in my free time for fun, when I don't even write. I find it so much fun. it's one of the reasons what makes people-watching so interesting tbh, picking up random strangers habits and fashion styles etc. Idm sitting at a train station for an hour for this reason. I feel creepy tho... sometimes I just sit there trying to create background for a random person I don't know.

Same. I just love creating a character from scratch and developing it into someone that could actually be your friend or weird-ass neighbor

The OCs I encountered of my 2 years of (cliche) fanfictions are either mary sues, the one who has a tragic backstory or the one who is a nerd and nobody likes her because she's a nerd..

The nerds sometimes tend to be mary sues

Some fanfictions with mary sues are kinda fun to read.. Some of them are not. I don't like them nor hate them

exactly this! and I find it especially fun if there's a challenge. how to make one of those overused type of OC's into an original, interesting one. you have the all too known ice queen character for example, who has a fucked up background and what not, but it's lacking most of the time. the most fun thing about it is to make one that is relatable and realistic yet still defines as "ice queen/king" in her/his own way.

that being said, I don't usually write, so they always end up being forgotten. T^T

I used to make a ton of OCs (most of which I never used and most of them ended up becoming their own ACTUAL original character for original works) so I don't really CARE if people are writing fanfic with OCs in main position, I just don't read them but I don't mind if they're back up or supporting characters because sometimes you just don't have enough characters or you just need to fill out a minor role.

That being said i do despise the 'SUDDENLY ONE CHARACTER HAS A RANDOM SISTER WHO ARRIVES' or just in general adding a singular girl somehow to the plot (i've legit seen people do that to shit like Lord of the Flies like...what)
