Article: SM wins the 'Golden Disk' daesang six years in a row, but what about SHINee?

Source: Sports Seoul via Naver

1. [+403, -81] The class of the daesang seems to have dropped a lot

2. [+338, -93] EXO only got popular for Growl. SHINee's been consistent since Sherlock.

3. [+243, -63] SHINee's the top when it comes to vocal talent and performance. Like they ate a CD! ♥

4. [+39, -7] EXO prioritized earning public recognition with a traditional SM style song while SHINee looked to stand out and be unique. They're known for being non-SM in style. The only reason they were able to get their niche songs so popular was purely through their own talent and effort. And of course, there's a difference between being popular and being talented. It'd be more difficult for EXO to sing 'Everybody' than it would be for SHINee to sing 'Growl'. SHINee chose talents over public recognition. I think that's an accurate dissection.

5. [+39, -7] There's nothing any of us can do about it... The Golden Disk gives the daesang purely based on physical sales.

6. [+35, -8] Probably the most well liked group out of SM. They're passionate about everything and don't act up at all. They're decent idols.

7. [+30, -11] A bit off putting to see them win daesang like they just won #1 at some music show... Maybe because they shot to popularity so fast. I heard their fans were crying in the crowd but EXO acts so calm like they expected to win.

8. [+25, -5] SHINee's live last night was amazing! Definitely a long run for them... I grade success based on longevity of your career, not how many headlines you can land.

9. [+24, -9] The daesang's meaning in the past was to measure how many people owned or bought that singer's album... but SM came up with a way to work around it with repackaged, photocard albums, and fan signings. The meaning of the daesang was changed not to measure how many people owned the album but how many albums one person owned.
Kiss version -> 269,689 copies. Hug version -> 201,881 copies. Kiss repackaged -> 336,024 copies. Repackaged hug -> 199,983 copies. All of this together was media played as million sellers that beat out Kim Gun Mo, etc etc blah blah blah blahbhalbhalh already heard this stuff in other comments.

10. [+23, -3] I'm sure anyone who's seen yesterday's stage will notice how much SHINee has grown. Despite the unstable audio settings, they showed unwavering skill that displayed their seven years of experience. Although they didn't win any big award, they lived up to our expectations of showing a stage that exceeded our imaginations!

This is actually true. Suho looks grateful and holding his tears but some member especially Tao kinda off putting. This is GDA Daesang you silly! Not MAMA or Melon   Maybe because this is their 3rd daesang that it seems normal now. I appreciate their hideous crying more tbh.

Well didn't EXO sold the most, so they actually deserve the disk daesang? Same like PSY who had the best digital selling song this yer, so he also deserve the digital daesang.

People complained when awards got to the wrong hands yet also complain when it actually is logically/fairly given out.

It seems like the actual issue people are having is that SM found a way to "trick the system" and get more sales with EXO with all the repackages, etc..

Your saying it wasn't a public friendly song?

I never said it wasn't public friendly. But for the past few years SM has been releasing anything BUT public friendly tracks. They usually release songs that would be considered bad or subpar without a good performance.

The Boys, WSS, Everybody, Catch Me, Super Junior title tracks, IGAB, Wolf, etc.

All of those got negative reception, but fans liked the performances of said songs. And when I say got negative reception I'm going from unbiased points of views and not from their fans.

The only recent songs I can think of that were simply public friendly are Dream Girl and Growl.

EXO won with or without repackages. Growl (Korean ver) was the highest selling album this year, and it was a repackage album. When you factor in the original album it was over 500,000 sales. It was a lot higher than SHINee's album and repackage (even if you added all 3 together).

With a roster that includes the likes of Suju, TVXQ, SNSD and now Exo, I think barring a year where those mentioned don’t release anything or Shinee have multiple comebacks, Shinee may possibly never pose a challenge for daesang again.

With the addition of Gaon awards that rewards purely for sales of physical and digital products and it being the chart tracker that GDA uses (correct me if I'm wrong) for its own awards, I think its sorta redundant for GDA to weight the daesang at such a high percentage (60%) of sales in regards to someone's overall score. The award is basically the same as Gaon's with that high a % weighting, especially as the other parts only make up 40% meaning that someone with high sales isn’t likely to be beaten.

Maybe they could lower the weighting and increase stuff like judge's decision or add in some other criteria (like those random weekly music show criteria) so that it opens up the playing for other groups/labels to compete.

That shade lol.

I see what you're saying though. I think what that person meant was public friendly = SM standard song.

For real, just deal with it.

GDA only counts the Korean vers, so how did they 'cheat the system'?

SHINee had no chance to win cause if it wasn't EXO, it would be SNSD

Lol, Idk you guys I was just making an observation about the way that people think it was calculated (from the comments I've seen from a lot of the people complaining about how EXO won) hence the quotation marks. I wasn't making a statement on the way the numbers actually worked out, cuz I don't really know or care. Take it up with them not me.

& I've known for months that SHINee wasn't going to win. I was kinda hoping for SNSD but in the end of course it was going to be EXO. I wasn't surprised.
