The Japanese Dorama & Movie Thread

Recommended Posts

I've always wanted a thread like this since not so many people on OH seem to watch j-dramas so less likely to be watching the same thing and not having an outlet to describe my thoughts.

I'm a bit conflicted about doctor x season 4. I'm not sure if I should start watching it now, or wait until its finished and fully subed.

No problem~

Yea i've thought about making this thread for like 2 years but never did lol. Official threads for jdramas aren't really a thing on this forum so a general one seemed like a good idea.

I'll wait to see how it goes and then i'll ask a mod if the thread could be stickied/pinned.

I sometimes want the same thing for korean dramas that don't get all the hype that others get.

I caved and will be watching doctor x season 4 as it gets subbed. Even though the whole thing is quite repetitive I'm hoping that the special was hinting as seeing more of who Michiko daimon is as a person.

Waiting for subs for currently airing TV shows is the worst. I'm surprised how long it's taking Doctor X season 4 episode 4 to get done.

Hippocratic oath is really good. I like how Japanese drama tend to explore philosophical ideas in more depth while also having a tight story line.

Blitzed my way through the first 8 episodes of nodame cantabile. I love the character development and the pace of the story also allows me to appreciate more classical pieces of music.

Don't forget the specials/movies too.

are the good? I don't want to ruin something that was so perfect in its execution.

watching Liar game, since I've watched the korean remake some of the games are the same I just don't necessarily remember all the details. But even then there are some significant differenced that makes this original live action just as interesting. Nan's character as naive as she is at least seems to play a slightly more active role while on her mission to make the world around sing koombaya with her.

Does anyone know of Japanese films that are similar in cinematography as House of flying daggers, crouching tiger hidden dragon, Masquerade, the legendary courtesan hwang jin yi.

Like colorful artsy type historical movies? I'm not familiar with any japanese movies like that.

Here are some historical movies though in case they might interest you

I liked the first 2 movies. I haven't actually watched the third one yet. I've been meaning to for years but never got around to it.

Thanks, I'll have a look into these movies.

It doesn't have to be artsy, but most of the J-Movies that I've watched generally fit the teen angst/love story feel like that's all their film industry seems to offer. Even something in a modern day setting but where all the elements of a film come together to make a masterpiece would be welcome.

Outside of the idol-y and young adult type movies there's a lot of crime movies or the weirder or surreal type movies. Those are enjoyable but i wouldn't call them masterpieces. You could check out some of the slice of life drama type movies i guess like Umimachi Diary and Like Father Like Son. Probably don't fit what you're looking for though.

Since you named some chinese movies though, i highly recommend watching the two Red Cliff movies and In The Mood For Love. They are regarded as some of the best chinese movies and are some of my favorite. The Grandmasters might be up there too.

Fortunately I do love my crime related movies so if you got any recommendations to list them for me.

Tenno no Ryoriban and Tonbi got a lot from what i remember: Or they are highly rated at least. Tonbi is from 2013 but close enough to 3 years. I haven't watched the first one and only watched the first ep of the second so i don't really have an opinion on either of them.

These involve crime or yakuza in one way or another:
Confessions
Snow White Murder Case
World of Kanako (Hard for me to say whether this is good or not but it's a dark, twisted experience lol)
Outrage
Why Don't You Play In Hell?

There's also some good dramas like:
Shokuzai
Ishi no Mayu
Hitorishizuka
Byakuyako

Ouroboros seems pretty popular but it felt a bit too idol-y for me. Just the tone didn't feel quite right.

Does Mother count as crime? A teacher kidnaps one of her students and raises her. Ok it doesn't count because it's more of a melodrama but it's my favorite drama and i just wanted to take my chance and recommend it

I loved Ouroboros and enjoyed ishino mayu and the second season which they named something completely different. I quite like the mystery/crime stuff that WOWOW come up with.

I'm halfway through the second season of Ishi no Mayu. I am enjoying it but i got a little distracted with anime and was watching a lot of Kuroko lol. Also i got annoyed when the other department was keeping stuff from them and not helping each other. That stuff really bothers me in these types of shows.

I also hate it when other departments end up being road blocks to each other even in US TV shows this type of petty behaviour/story lines happens so nothing new. Higanbana took this drama troupe to another level though.

Tried watching A Life and stopped half way through, felt like there was going to be makjang worth plot lines which I'm not in the mood for. Instead I started and nearly finished From five to nine and loving it and it's lightheartedness for now.

I really hope Jimi ni Sugoi will keep getting subbed. After going through a phase of crime related shows I've all of a sudden got a craving for light hearted fluff. Recommendations are would be appreciated.

Also watching Rakuen which has me a bit intrigued.

I'm still waiting on this too OTL

Who knew a drama with the cast of Satomi and Masaki would have trouble getting subbed.

Have you seen Good Morning Call?

i started watched before checking, big mistake to have just looked at the cast and assumed it would've been done. I haven't watched good morning call only because the cast looked a bit young to me but might give it a go if if it's good. Also does anyone know where boss season is subbed? I can only find season 2.

Does Japan censor drama content as much as they do in Korea? I've noticed that Japanese dramas don't censor blades and is willing to raise topics or allude to certain things that even Korean cable channels wouldn't dare mention.

Good Morning Call gets kinda annoying in the second half but it's cute overall if you're in the mood for an ItaKiss type of drama. It's also the only recent romcom that i was able to finish so it was the only one i could rec lol.

Gooddrama has season 1 but the video players there are kinda shitty.

I don't remember any censoring for a drama. I have seen it happen in anime though. They don't seem to shy away from topics from what i've seen either. Not sure what topics you are thinking of but they have shown domestic abuse, child abuse, adultery, racism, homosexual relationship. Maybe not super often but it happens sometimes. People on Mydramalist seems to hate dramas about cheating lol. They can't stand it and seem disgusted that the creators would make a show about it.

Might have to try Gooddrama then, there was a time when their players were okay and then everyone else got upgrades and they got stuck in the past.

I maybe censoring wasn't exactly the right work but infidelity seems to occur more often in J-dramas and when it comes to domestic violence, abuse, trans, prostitution, organ black market, human trafficking etc. they seem more willing to depict it visually than just mention it in passing if that when compared to K-dramas. Also I like Japan doesn't censor brands in some K-drama's the lengths they go to is ridiculous in a bad way.

I used to watch things at gooddrama all the time. But when i was checking it out for Boss, it was kinda slow and you can't skip ahead because it will restart the video OTL

The most fucked up thing i've ever seen in a drama happened in a jdrama. I think it was the first ep of Mother.

When Ashida Mana's parents put her in a trash bag and left her in the garbage pile. Like what would have happened if she wasn't found!

I think the most disgusting thing I've seen so far was in Dias police: Ihou Keisatsu

suicide by tongue biting from the transexual

my goodness what I have been watching.

yay the subber that did NigeHaji is picking up the Haru drama. Hopefully it's good. it sounds interesting.

http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Okaasan,_Musume_wo_Yamete_Ii_Desu_ka%3F

This was one of the few that peaked my interest a little, but at the same time I'm worried that there would either be too much of the drama that I hate or not live up to my expectations.

Just watched Totsuzen Desu ga, Ashita Keikkon shimasu. I'll keep watching to see how it goes but what I really want to know is who was singing the song at the end with the credits?

That's Mariya (the female lead) singing . It's called Motion and comes out next month.

I keep replaying the ending/credits just for the song.

I can't wait for the full version.

The other female actress in the thumbnail, I feel like she's now appearing in bigger supporting roles with each drama I've seen her in: from 5 to 9, family's form and now this one.

Hi you lovely people! I am trying my luck here.

Many donkey years ago in the 90s, I watched a Japanese drama about a high school girl who had to work in a traditional Japanese inn after her biological father (an old man) had passed away. The thing was apparently her mother had an affair with that old man and bore her but still married to her husband, who forgave her infidelity and raised the girl as his own. But as per will, the high school girl was to train in that inn after school everyday, for a shot in future that she would take over as the head. Her rival was the daughter-in-law of the deceased owner, who plotted with her own brother to oust the high school girl and whatnot. Get the picture?

My question is.....Does anyone remember this particular drama and if yes, can you tell me the name of the drama? Back then, I could not watch the last episode due to exams. I just want to re-watch the whole thing. I went to Japan twice in hope of finding a box set but when I tried to describe the gist of the drama via a translator....No positive result....Google gives me nothing. Tried in the past using web crawler, yahoo, MSN, even MySpace. Nothing. I just need the name. I don't even remember the lead actress but I do remember the cute pink kimono she wore for her high school graduation ceremony. Oh btw, the brother of the daughter-in-law had a change of heart over the period and ended in a love triangle with lead actress and her guy friend. Both guys were hot btw. Useless info I know.

Help.

Never watched it but thought I'd give internet sleuthing a go. The synopsis for Okami Sandai Onna no Tatakai and Onsen e Ikou sound like they could fit. What year did you happen to be watching this drama and how many episodes was it?

Just started watching dame na watashi ni koishite kudasai. All I think about when I see Fukada Kyoko is how similar she looks to Han Hyo Joo, they could pass off as twins or sisters.
