HALLOH!WEEN FRIGHT NIGHTS - NEXT MOVIE OCTOBER 29 10AM EDT

In Takahashi Miike's As the Gods will, ridiculous meets sad meets scary, as our main leads run for their lives and are put to test in game after game à la Hunger Games, except with a quirkier fun twist. One of the most striking scenes was actually the opening one, a lot of horror movie directors just ease into the movie to get the viewer comfortable then go in for the jump scare, but in this movie there is the shock factor from the first 5 minutes, and it doesn't let up later in the movie, unexpected characters die at unexpected times. Characters repress their feelings towards the situation and each other, as it is made clear that the sole goal became to survive.

I also think it's a nice representation of the human survival instict, some of the characters were friends, fancied each other romantically, had countless interactions but when it comes down to it and a character dies, the others don't have time to cry, and it is mainly shown through the lack of "emotional death flashbacks" as I like to call them. The characters became simple in the form of Weak VS Strong, Witty VS Stupid, Lucky VS Unlucky. When one dies, the others just want to hold onto their lives harder instead of dwelling on each death.

Additionally, one of the ideas that came clear to me is that maybe, life is just a big game, we have been characters since the moment we were born, we are put to tests that either rise us up or destroy us, we are truly "God's children" and only the ones who are the smartest, strongest and luckiest survive in a world where only God's favorites are preferred.

Overall this was a movie that displayed that life is fickle if you just move one wrong step (quite literally), that fear for your life can supress all other emotions, and that in the end, you could be enjoying some ice cream with the guy you like at one moment, and you'd die the next.

Live to the fullest, kids.

A Tale of Two Sisters

South Korea . 2003

Friday October 28 9PM EDT

'SooMi and SuYeon return home after an extended illness and hospital stay. Things have not been the same since their mother passed away. Their return is welcomed by their stepmother EunJoo.

It’s evident that SooMi, the older and stronger of the two, isn’t afraid to speak her mind when it comes to their family troubles. SuYeon is more timid and wary of their stepmother and looks to SooMi for help. Continually picked on and harassed by their stepmother, the two have no choice but to endure the relationship for their father’s sake. SooMi promises SuYeon that she will never let their stepmother beat them again. Unexplainable things start to occur at the house. Something has changed, no one knows what it is, but the sisters can feel it.'
