Despite debuting less than two years ago, Korean boy band EXO is poised to be the next global K-pop phenom. The 12-member act—yes, twelve—saw their debut full-length XOXO become South Korea's first million-selling album in 12 years. The boys have a brewing American fanbase, too: The video for their Southern hip hop-inspired "Growl" (below) was the third most viewed K-pop music video in the U.S. last year, after Korean stars Psy and Girls' Generation. They also snagged the fifth and ninth biggest-selling K-pop tracks in the U.S. for "Growl" (which Billboard critics named the best K-pop track of 2013) and the dubstep-y

respectively.

Go back into Fuse's archives and check out a classic interview with EXO-M here.

American or not, means very little. I fail to comprehend how the minds of some work; downplaying the ever-growing international fandom is absurd, especially when the very songs that propelled EXO to the international stage were songs that had contributions from recognized foreign writers.

All in all, no one can deny the greatness of "Growl".

Now, now, Fuse...

I agree with the majority of the list (BANKS, Tori Kelly, Sampha etc) but EXO just sticks out like a sore thumb to me...

Idk? The only one I even know from this list are Exo. Says something about Exo's popularity imo.

Didn't they sell well over 100k with Mama though?

They do. Like, everyone else is all indie and cool and EXO is manufactured pop. They are not FUSE's style. At least, not the FUSE I remember.

Not really.

I bet a writer wanted to put them in there because they're a fan. Seems to happen a lot of the time.

Fuse has changed in the past years.

They even named RPPP the song of the year in 2013....and they said IGAB was a musical masterpiece with hardcore and fierce rapping...

So the fact that people (I'm assuming I'm not the only one) only know Exo out of 17 other artists listed says nothing about their popularity?

I see.

You're a Kpop fan though.

...but you're a kpop fan

Beat me to it.

It does mean something but not anything significant. It says you don't listen to indie hipster music.

There are going to be people who go through that list and know every artist EXCEPT for EXO. See what I mean?

But I don't see why that matters. The same could be said for the other artists. "But they are all fans of ~insert genre~"

In the end it's all about generalizations towards the fandoms.

Exo's fanbase isn't suddenly nonexistent just because they are kpop fans.

It says you are a kpop fan and/or acquainted with popular Eastern entertainment.

What?

Didn't you just say "the fact that I only know EXO out of all 17 artists on that list says something about their popularity"? My reply was that it says that you are a kpop fan so of course you know who EXO is.

Who was even genealizing the EXO fandom?

The point is, EXO is less likely to have a big breakthrough in America than Tori Kelly and the like. EXO mainly attracts a particular group, Kpop fans whereas the aforementioned is more likely to garner attention from the general public. I think you misunderstood there - I'm saying that you can't say that you knowing them proves their popularity just because you know them because you are a Kpop fan so you would obviously know them.
